While my allegiance may be questionable to my home state, one thing NJ always wins in is the myriad choices for Indian lunch buffets. Kay and I stopped by to try Mirchi for the first time this past week while I was Shanghaied in NJ due to Irene. We sampled samosas (ok), eggplant, mushrooms, chicken tikka masala, Andra chicken curry, tandoor chicken, vegetable and chicken biriyani, sambar, dal makni, and gulab jamuns. I noticed that the vegetarian dishes in particular were actually spicy and not mild. The clientele seemed to enjoy it, even though most non-Indians would think its too spicy. Everything was very fresh, flavorful, and thoughtfully prepared. The service was good for self serve buffet, but would be mediocre for anything else - they deliver warm naan to your table as you need it but didn't check on you often or asked if you wanted anything a la carte. A pitcher of water on each table ensures you always have a full cup and don't have to wait for service. For $10 its a great value. Ambiance wise, its a little sparse and people keep very low key. While it doesn't rank as my favorite Indian restaurant, it scores well for tummy satisfaction. 3.5 stars. read more

Looks like this place is gone for good! I'm gonna give my review though when I went in the past, because it doesn't seem like I will be coming here again. We came here for the lunch buffet, and they did have a good selection. However, their food is way too spicy for my taste, and the spiciness was so strong, that it's almost impossible to know what you're eating. The service was good, but you have to be very specific in question if you want to ask something to your server, as they will only answer in yes or no responses. I'll give an example when I called:"Hi, I wanted to make sure you had lunch buffet today, but not tomorrow because it's the weekend." Host:"Yes." I later had to clarify the question. Delightful customer service - quick with getting my order ready, and the food is delicious. I had the Saag Paneer and Mixed Veggie Lakoda. They even gave me complimentary roti. So good. I don't know a ton about Indian food. My dining companion knew even less. Our waiter guided us towards something not spicy for my friend - a very delicious chicken dish he called "kebab" or "kebap" (language barrier!). It reminded me of the ridiculously delicious souvlakia that I get at the St. George's Greek festival - fork tender, well seasoned, with a great texture that you usually don't get from chicken. I choose the lamb vindaloo which had just the right amount of heat at "medium." Very tender chunks of lamb in spiced sauce with punches of fresh herbs. I'd go back. I have been eating the lunch buffet at Mirchi at least 2 times a month for the last 2 years and have been able to enjoy the food regardless of the ambiance until recently. The carpet is old and dirty that my feet stick to it when I walk. The chairs have so many stains that I put a napkin down before sitting. There doesn't seem to be a manager present and when I asked the staff to give my name and number to the manager/owner they look at me as if they don't understand why and I never received a call back. There was one employee who said that they were going to replace the carpet but that was 3 months ago. Even though I think the food is delicious , given the poor condition in the restaurant I can only imagine what the kitchen must look like. We got the chicken tikka masala- a little on the creamy side! It reminded me of butter chicken consistency but the flavor was nice! It had a nice and smoky flavor to it. Not recommend for buffet- waste of money Got a text message that buffet has 60+ items. After I reach the location (North Brunswick) there were less than 20 items. I asked the server that the message states 60 plus items, he stated "oh thats in Edison not here". I should have walked out at this time, but me and my wife were super hungry and we went a head with the buffet. My wife is vegetarian - and we only had 2-3 options for veg. After trying those it was super bad. Paneer butter masala was so sour as if its been kept for days. We called out for Naan multiple times and the server said he is getting in few. After 5 plus minutes he got 1 naan (cut into 4) and since other tables were also waiting for it by the time I got up from my seat it was gone and when I asked the server for naan he reacted in a way "oh is it finished already let me get some more". Same thing happened again and we couldn't help but had to leave. I explained the issue to the counter guy and he smiled and said "oh sorry no hindi". I told him in English and he was like " hmm ok". no apology no eagerness to help nothing. On top of it they charged me 49$ for 2 buffet which we didn't even eat. Waste of money and time. So after debating with my partner in crime what to eat for an house (really didn't want another chain experience on RT 18) we settled on the revolving door of restaurants next to Regal. Even if it wasn't in Edison, this place serves up some mean southern Indian food. We split samosas to start followed by sharing the Fish Tikka, Aloo Gobi (cauliflower/potato in cumin curry) and garlic nann. All of the food was at just the right spice level and seasoned well. The Tikka in particular was huge (needed to pack up leftovers which nevers happens with Indian and me). Next time will have to try the Biryani everyone is raving about. Also props for having an assortment of goat dishes. While I am not a fan, quite daring for places in the US to serve that much variety of goat. However be ready to order an appetizer if you are starving. It says it on the menu that food might take a while and trust me it does so heed the warning. read more

The food and service are just excellent. No need to continue searching, Mirchi's the place you should go for lunch / dinner, even if it's a bit out of your way. In fact, we asked them to cater our wedding, and the reviews and compliments my wife and I received are just astounding. 90% of our guests were from India and the menu was North Indian (including the chaat bar). I love this restaurant for the healthy flair they bring to Indian food. Today I had the kati rolls which are far from the tradition greasy street food version. They use fresh ingredients and not greasy at all. I have had many salad bowls and always enjoy them. I love how it is like Chiplote in concept just with Indian food. I have visited the restaurant with my family about 5 pax. The food was nice, but they are forcing 15% gratuity on the bill without people consent if the group is more than 4. They should tell the guests before adding that to the bill they generate. Also it is up the the guest how much they want to add as tip, they shouldn't be forced. read more

This place is awesome. We have only been there on Sundays when they have the super buffet with easily 30+ items. Many exotic dishes not found in "regular" indian restaurants. My favorite includes a mushroom and veggie sauté and the goat soup (vaya?). I take my five year old son there every time and we feast. read more

I love Indian food. That said, I tend to be very picky when it comes to Indian food, 'cuz I know what the good stuff is. I tried this place for the first time yesterday. My friend (whom I believe is also reviewing the restaurant - Suanne L.) and I sampled the lunch buffet and everything was delicious! The first thing we noticed was the spice level: Most Indian buffets tend to keep their food pretty mild in order to appeal to a broader range of clientele. However, Mirchi didn't seem to be afraid to season their food authentically. I'm not saying that the food was super spicy, just that it was anything but bland. I was very pleased with the fullness of flavor in each dish. I don't remember everything we tried (sorry, it was a lot of food!), but among them were: vegetable samosas, vegetable biryani, chicken tikka masala, salt lassi, and gulab jamun. All of it was so delicious, it's hard to pick just one thing to talk about. The staff also brought us naan and the instant I took a bite, I blissed out. It was perfectly cooked - moist, fluffy ... divine. If you're new to Indian food, I strongly encourage you to go for the lunch buffet - that way, you can try a little of everything and get more of a feel for what you like. The most horrible experience!!! Never again... NOT recommended for vegetarians. We ensured repeatedly that we're vegetarians and ordered veg sweet corn soup and they brought the ones with chicken and egg. The owner/waitstaff blamed the kitchen staff / chef to not read the order ticket. The temperature was so cold - we asked 4 times to turn the heat up, to which we were told that every time people open the door, the wind blows in. But all the guests were in jackets and when we were leaving, we noticed the thermostat set to 60!!! I tried their lunch buffet today. Sadly, I was in a rush and did not get to try the many veggie options--which looked very good and a blended both northern and southern dishes. Butter chicken, fresh nan, chicken biryani (although I prefer boneless) were all excellent. Tandoori chicken and chinese style dragon chicken very good. Goat curry was ok--I simply do not find goat very flavorful. $8.99 price excellent! Space is unadorned, but bathroom was ok. The host was very nice--he saw me looking at the menu on the door; gave me a tour of the buffet; and was so pleasant I did not bother to look at Shalimar next door. I went to this place three times so far. Two times for lunch buffet and once for dinner. Some items are ok, like naan. Biryani is very bad. They don't refill items during the lunch buffet. I miss curry in the UK a great deal. Despite the variety of curry in the Northeast we keep coming back here whenever we are in the area... it's closer to what you can find across the pond. Prices are OK. Chicken Tikka Massala could be cheaper... but, really, it's great here ... I usually avoid the dish because restaurants tend to mainstream it a lot (make it bland, too mild, or too sweet) but Mirchi does it as it should be done. Great place. read more
