Can't beat the location. Right on a prime reach of the Au Sable where, with correct timing, you'll see trout gulping mayflies, whetting your appetite for a trip downstream. Fly shop staff is always helpful and patient with questions, and every year it seems like local tiers have tweaked the old favorite patterns and invented striking new ones to bring more fish to hand. Food isn't cheap, but it's never disappointing, and portions run large (can't make it through a full day of fishing on tea and toast, can you?). The menu offers both conventional and creative selections, something not always the case around Grayling. When my wife and I had dinner there on our latest stay, my flank steak was outstanding, and the housemade steak sauce dabbed on the side complimented it wonderfully. I've paid more for steaks that were not nearly as good. My wife enjoyed her cod, but really the hit of the night was the crispy duck wontons. Our server said they were a new item the kitchen was trying out and we said KEEP THEM! Our room certainly showed its years of use. There were some scuffs and scratches, though only to the degree that suggests "character," not shabbiness. It was spacious and certainly clean. A sliding door opens onto a patio along the river. The bathroom was clean and the shower had plenty of hot water, and good water pressure. There is not any air conditioning, which usually isn't a problem in northern Michigan, though our first night up there was sweltering, even with every window open and the fan on high. No fridge in the room, though the "board room" across the lot from the lodge has a large refrigerator and some limited cooking facilities that all guests have access to. Not to mention a fantastic library of fly fishing books. So, to sum up each component of the place: Fly shop: 5 stars Lodging: 4 stars Restaurant: 5 stars Overall atmosphere: 10 stars (I know, Yelp doesn't allow that, but they ought to in this case.) Average: 5 stars Gates is a classic Au Sable experience.

Positives: the 5 hour trip down the Ausable river was great. It really was a pretty trip down with…read moreour canoes. We saw some awesome wildlife! There wasn't as many easy access stops on the sides, though. Negatives: From the very beginning, the owner or manager was extremely cold and rude. We waited 15 minutes for him to come check us in, which is fine, but once he walked into the check in room, he barked at us "what do you want". The entire conversation was uncomfortable like we were putting him out. A few other couples we met later on the trip said the same exact thing as well. The ride to the drop off area was a bit wild. The busses went so fast and once the guys pulled our canoes off the back of the busses, they didn't say a word to us or tell us any tips on how to get into the docking area. They barely let us have time to ask any questions if we had any--they literally duped us off and left within seconds. The end of the trip was quite interesting as well. The sign to get off is covered in weeds. There is no current for the last 1/2 hour of the 5 hour trip. It would have been nice to have known that but it wasn't too big of a deal for us since we had the canoes anyway. The worst part was finding the dock. It was extremely hidden and you could easily miss it with the lack of the sign and the way it was positioned. Once you get off, the workers weren't any more friendly than earlier. You also have to walk about 10 flights of stairs up a cliff, so be aware! Wish they would have done a better job with giving us that as a heads up.

The food is definitely targeted towards men's golf outings. The courses are in bad shape, the bunkers were not raked, the green had bald spots and the bunkers are mostly dirt. WARNING - Bed Bugs in Duplex 10 at Jacks Landing…read more I want to start by saying I have stayed at Jacks every year for the past 22 years and have always enjoyed our vacations until this year. We mostly stayed in Duplex 10 but have also stayed at the waterfront cabins and Anglers Hideaway. This year we stayed the week of July 6th in Duplex 10. We discovered a bed bug issue towards the end of the week. We started getting red bite marks and waking up to find blood on the sheets. Upon further inspection we discovered live bed bugs and a lot of black/red stains on the box springs of all three beds and evidence on the futon. We immediately notified the management and were extremely disappointed in the response. They said they always clean the rooms and have never seen evidence of bed bugs. The offered us a $150 gift certificate for next year and told us one of the managers was going to the store to get "stuff" to clean it up right away. When we pushed for a full refund they said "they don't know where they came from" insinuating that we brought them with us. This is a very big infestation and not hard to find once we looked closer. All four people who stayed in the cabin had upwards of 50+ bites appear once we were home and started looking closer. We kick ourselves for not inspecting the bed upon arrival but after 22 years you tend to trust a place. I understand that these things happen but the response from the manager was the worst part. She said she had them before and it was not a big deal to get rid of them. They insinuated we brought them. Worst of all I believe they are going to try to "clean" it themselves. From what I read (and I have not read a lot) bed bugs are difficult to eliminate, and my guess is they will continue to be a problem at Jacks. I want to raise awareness to all potential guests at Jack that bed bugs were in Duplex 10 to be very cautious if staying at Jacks Landing
