Can't beat the location. Right on a prime reach of the Au Sable where, with correct timing, you'll see trout gulping mayflies, whetting your appetite for a trip downstream. Fly shop staff is always helpful and patient with questions, and every year it seems like local tiers have tweaked the old favorite patterns and invented striking new ones to bring more fish to hand. Food isn't cheap, but it's never disappointing, and portions run large (can't make it through a full day of fishing on tea and toast, can you?). The menu offers both conventional and creative selections, something not always the case around Grayling. When my wife and I had dinner there on our latest stay, my flank steak was outstanding, and the housemade steak sauce dabbed on the side complimented it wonderfully. I've paid more for steaks that were not nearly as good. My wife enjoyed her cod, but really the hit of the night was the crispy duck wontons. Our server said they were a new item the kitchen was trying out and we said KEEP THEM! Our room certainly showed its years of use. There were some scuffs and scratches, though only to the degree that suggests "character," not shabbiness. It was spacious and certainly clean. A sliding door opens onto a patio along the river. The bathroom was clean and the shower had plenty of hot water, and good water pressure. There is not any air conditioning, which usually isn't a problem in northern Michigan, though our first night up there was sweltering, even with every window open and the fan on high. No fridge in the room, though the "board room" across the lot from the lodge has a large refrigerator and some limited cooking facilities that all guests have access to. Not to mention a fantastic library of fly fishing books. So, to sum up each component of the place: Fly shop: 5 stars Lodging: 4 stars Restaurant: 5 stars Overall atmosphere: 10 stars (I know, Yelp doesn't allow that, but they ought to in this case.) Average: 5 stars Gates is a classic Au Sable experience.

There have been updates--room looked recently painted, there was a stove/sink setup in the room that looked new, bathroom was recently retiled. There also are spots of unpainted wood, some caulk that is failing, countertop peeling off. In the bathroom, a large countertop sink leaves little space to set soap or other toiletries. It takes a very long time to get hot water. Some of the drawers in the dresser are missing handles, or have bottoms dropping out. Still, the room was clean, the bed was comfortable if a little soft, the shower is large, which is almost never the case at older small motels. To hew closely to Yelp's definition of star ratings, I have to go with two, as I definitely have had better. But I've had worse too, and I wouldn't rule out a return.

Came here after I found my usual camping choice here, the Au Sable Loop, full. Not as convenient…read morefor fishing the Au Sable below the dam, which is my main draw here, but it served its purpose. Sites are very private, all surrounded by tall trees and very brushed in. Even at high noon I still had lots of shade. All looked more or less level, though the ground was a little hard and gravelly. Not many people there when I arrived on Thursday afternoon, but it was about half full by Saturday morning. Water from the pump was quite rusty (see photo) and I advise bringing drinking water. Highway M-33 isn't far away and there was a bit of noise from that for most of the day, as well as what sounded like a construction project underway in the neighborhood. But, you also hear loons calling on the pond at night, which is a compensation. There is a boat lauch to Mio Pond a short distance from the campsites. Wouldn't mind going back, just prefer being a little further out of town.

My husband and I were here for a wedding and the whole weekend at Sojourn was like a fairy tale…read more Granted, the fall weather was spectacular, but the setting and entire venue was over-the-top charming and idyllic. Technically a "rustic" venue, you'll be hard pressed to not feel showered in elegance throughout. As you drive into the resort, you'll first notice a picture perfect sign and vignette. Then, the layout for the outdoor ceremony right in front of the lake was dreamy (the folding chairs are never comfy, though, ha!) from the floral trellis to the sound system. Everyone moved into a deluxe tent for appetizers and cocktail party. It's well heated and sturdy enough to forget it's a tent. Then we moved into the building for the reception. The cabin is gorgeous - outdoorsy touches and decor abound. It's heaven for Instagram updates (actually, the whole resort is). When the sun sets, the light pouring in makes it somewhat challenging to stay cool but the light blast didn't last long. The indoor bar/lounge between the tent and building is a nice addition for the evening. There is a very small ladies restroom and if it's the only one, they could use another. Then it was back to the tent for the after party. (This was also the place for the party the night before.) Loved Sojourn so much!

Additionally, Joy and her staff provided first class customer service and high quality hospitality. It is not far from the I-75 Exit and it is located right in the middle of the Golf Mecca.
