I've been reading other reviews and seem to have gotten a bad shake and not normal experience…read more Despite that: Just stayed here for the Snodrift rally. I had called a few months before and had an open reservation. I checked a few days before arrival, and the kind lady that had helped me the whole time had extended my arrival time by a day, assuming (correctly!) that'd I'd want to show up early. Fantastic customer service! I wasn't much of a fan of having to fill out a card with my info on it, but it's all info they could acquire by just running my license plate. I didn't want to pay up front, but I'm pretty sure I've had to at literally every other hotel. This one just felt more seedy somehow. My room, 105, was nice enough. It was decorated like someone stopped at a garage sale and bought a bunch of "outdoorsy" nicknacks and spread them around. Kind of odd, but not a dealbreaker. Small microwave, mini fridge, tiny table, single chair with a "seen better days" cushion, coatrack, dresser, all the normal fixins. The bathroom was small, but for a normal sized person, it was adequate. No soap or shampoo was provided, but there were a couple bars of hotel hand soap. If your waist size is more than 30", it's unlikely you will be able to wrap the provided towel around yourself. Nice hot water and pressure though! The toilet took some finesse to flush. The trick is to hold it until you actually see it complete the flush. One main problem I had was the bed. Nice big bed, normal boxspring. Likely the worst bed I've slept on in my life. I woke up the first morning fine, but developed a headache a bit later. The second night, I was getting a cold, and the bed took no prisoners. Splitting headache that morning with a lot of body aches. I was back out on stages that day and feeling worse from poor sleep AND getting sick. I honestly couldn't bear the thought of sleeping on that bed again, so I drove seven hours home with a fever, fighting off sleep, just to get rest on my own bed. I wanted to discuss in person that I was popping out early and my concerns, but no one answered the door at the office. I'll grant that I did not call the number (literally posted on the door), but it would have been nice to at least been acknowledged that I left early. I won't ask for money back, as the initial service was great and it's not their fault I got sick. But I can say if you get sick and stay in my room, you're in my prayers. Maybe bring a cot and bed roll.

The first room we were assigned smelled so bad my wife and I could not stay in the room. There was urine on the floor and on the toilet, the last time the toilet was used it wasn't even flushed. There was bottle caps on the floor, the tv was on it appears as if some left the room just before we got there. I wanted a king bed so the only way to do that was an upgrade to 180.00 a night. The young lady at the front desk Cheyanne was the only shinning star in this place, when I went down to complain she run up the stairs to check the room and said no problem she put us into another room. She said there would be a credit on my bill, I never asked what. The next day we left at 9am and did not return until 2pm and our room was not made up and never received clean towels. I felt for the price that was charges the room should have been made up. When I checked out I did receive a receipt for my $21.21 refund on my $360.00 bill. I recommend find someplace else to stay, as we part of a larger party I know for sure that we were not alone in the poor service.

When I developed a medical emergency during our stay Liz and Sheila responded by assisting my wife to and from the hospital over 30 minutes one way away. So Thunder Bay Resort is tops in our mind providing clean, spacious cabins, good food and good entertainment along with a caring staff. Keep up the good work and God bless all you do

Elk Viewing tour and dinner…read more We had no idea what to really expect, but had high hopes for a nice evening. Thunderbay Resort (TBR, for short) exceeded all expectations! We all seated in the Belgian Horse drawn carriages and took off on time for a 60 minute tour over the river and through the woods to dinner. We saw a lot of elk , too. No, these are not wild elk, but they are not domesticated, either. TBR strives to let them thrive as much as possible in a wild atmosphere, but they would never be able to bait them to be in viewing range for the guests if they weren't considered livestock. They openly explain this on the tour. This is not a zoo, folks, you are really in the forests and really viewing some majestic animals in their natural environment. TBR doesn't even intervene with medical assistance as they really let nature do it's thing. Jack (owner of TBR and dad of the chef, Spencer) was our guide. He educated us on the Elk, their history in MI, and of the resort. It was a clear afternoon in the low 30's and after dinner, we all got to experience the clear, dark, star-filled sky in the low 20's. BLANKETS PROVIDED! After dinner's ride was only 15 minutes or so back to the parking lot: A perfect way to cap off the dinner. Oh yeah.. dinner... Fantastic dinner cooked on two antique, wood-fired oven ranges in a beautiful cabin/eating hall decked out in taxidermy and country charm. This is a family run business and worked by the family. They meal is the same one they served when they started this out 30+ years ago. Nothing's changed except the date and building you eat in (it's way bigger now, and has indoor plumbing). The bathrooms are like museums, too. Not just clean, but tons of historical artifacts and knick-knacks to look at. The dinner wine choices are two reds and a white. They are OK. They serve a couple different appetizer wines with your first course and an ice wine with dessert. These were surprisingly good! If you don't want wine, there are soft drinks available and a cash bar for other drinks. This is MI wine, so if you approach it with that in mind, they are pretty good. In all, it's about a 4-4.5 hour experience. Nope, it's not cheap, but you are getting an amazing dinner and magical evening worth every penny. The only thing better would have been falling snow :-) But the stars up here in northeast MI are vivid since you are in the middle of the woods with no close cities anywhere near, so that was also part of the magic.

We were going to stay in a single villa but when we got to it (which seemed like a quarter mile walking from the parking lot), we were very disappointed. The fact that it was rustic was okay but we had inquired if there was a table where we could play cards in the evening and were told "yes". Well, the table was a small coffee table. The biggest problem was the bathroom shower which had a lot of mold. I attempted to call the front desk to report it but neither one of the two phones in the villa worked so I used my cell. I took a photo of the mold and requested that we be moved to the lodge. They did honor our request and the room was small but okay. When checking out the person at the front desk said that they checked out the bathroom issue that I reported and tholught it was fine. I was furious because I had a photo to prove my point and didn't like the attitude. The restaurant has a breakfast buffet but we decided to order individually. The servers don't come to your table - you go to the bar and order and pay and then someone brings your order to you. Lunch and dinner which are mediocre are served by the staff. Honestly, they need to invest some money to make improvements in the accommodations. We loved the courses but won't be returning because there is no option to stay anywhere else in that area that is decent.

WARNING - Bed Bugs in Duplex 10 at Jacks Landing…read more I want to start by saying I have stayed at Jacks every year for the past 22 years and have always enjoyed our vacations until this year. We mostly stayed in Duplex 10 but have also stayed at the waterfront cabins and Anglers Hideaway. This year we stayed the week of July 6th in Duplex 10. We discovered a bed bug issue towards the end of the week. We started getting red bite marks and waking up to find blood on the sheets. Upon further inspection we discovered live bed bugs and a lot of black/red stains on the box springs of all three beds and evidence on the futon. We immediately notified the management and were extremely disappointed in the response. They said they always clean the rooms and have never seen evidence of bed bugs. The offered us a $150 gift certificate for next year and told us one of the managers was going to the store to get "stuff" to clean it up right away. When we pushed for a full refund they said "they don't know where they came from" insinuating that we brought them with us. This is a very big infestation and not hard to find once we looked closer. All four people who stayed in the cabin had upwards of 50+ bites appear once we were home and started looking closer. We kick ourselves for not inspecting the bed upon arrival but after 22 years you tend to trust a place. I understand that these things happen but the response from the manager was the worst part. She said she had them before and it was not a big deal to get rid of them. They insinuated we brought them. Worst of all I believe they are going to try to "clean" it themselves. From what I read (and I have not read a lot) bed bugs are difficult to eliminate, and my guess is they will continue to be a problem at Jacks. I want to raise awareness to all potential guests at Jack that bed bugs were in Duplex 10 to be very cautious if staying at Jacks Landing
