I called before I headed in yesterday because it was snowing and I lived in Seattle for the past nine years, where everything shuts down at the mere threat of snow. But this is Minnesota and they were indeed open. I used the self service copier for my print jobs and a PC station to edit a Word doc. The PC station usage is charged by the minute, so I would not recommend heading to FedEx just to browse the internet, compose a long document, or do research (you can do that at most libraries for free, BTW). Both the copier and computer were user friendly and take credit cards for payment. While I was there I was asked by several employees if I needed any help. I was a little surprised to see a plotter in the copier area. So you can do large format printing here if you need to! My only quibble would be that I had to go to the front desk to get a scan . A minor gripe, but could be troublesome if you were in a hurry and there was a line at the front. Also, why do they trust you to print and copy but not scan? This store is large and clean and seems kind of new. There are FexEx shipping services and supplies, of course. I perused the store on my way out and noticed you can also purchase (random) things like candy, books, calendars, office supplies, and greeting cards. This FedEx is in the same small strip mall with Chipotle, Firehouse Subs, Tokyo Grill, and Sprint. On the 80 bus route (which hardly ever runs, so good luck). Quite convenient to have this in my hood.

The Nomadic Press is a really cool studio with an equally cool owner. Kent is a super nice guy,…read moreand it's clear his work is his passion. I had the privilege of attending a studio tour of the facilites where he produces his art. Stationery, business cards, invitations, certificates...you name it and he can print it. Have him print an invoice; that too will end up looking like an artifact :) He took the time to walk us through the entire process and patiently answered all our (mostly my) questions. He even allowed us to print little booklets and sent up back with souvenirs. His website is a great intro to his work, but if you can setup some time with him to visit the studio, you will fall in love with this method of print. Oh, I should also mention that he even tooled his own equipment to make his own paper at some point. Interesting process, interesting work and an interesting guy behind it all who is willing answer any questions you have (regardless of your print experience). Don't just check out the studio, give him your business and support a true craftsman.

When Kent Aldrich began his printing business over twenty years ago there were fewer and fewer real…read moreletterpress printers around because it had become easier and cheaper to print with more modern methods, and with the dawn of desktop publishing pretty much everybody became a printer. His choice to go into this business is tied to who he is as a person rather than what kind of career would make a lot of money. The quality and value of his work has provided for his family and a good life. Quality and value. That, really, is all that this review needs to say. There are now many more people experimenting with letter press in Minnesota, and some are pretty good. But I doubt that there are any who are in the same category as Nomadic Press in terms of quality and value. His dedication to traditional and time-honored methods of production and service alone puts Nomadic in a separate category, but he is also an artist with considerable taste and heart who can guide the customer to the best available result in the market. My business cards are not only read, but literally fondled by people I hand them to. They have weight, texture and they mean business. The Pantone colors specified by the designer were perfectly matched in the inks mixed by Kent. I sent two images- one that was labeled "inside". I thought it was pretty clear I wanted "cards". They even asked if I wanted envelopes. When I got to the store I saw that they had printed they them as flat cards not folded cards with the image inside. I said I asked for cards. These were for a group gift where I wanted each person to be able to write another message in the cards. The cashier asked for the person who made the cards to come out to speak to me. He was immediately rude and combative and said those are cards. I said I can show you the email where I asked for cards with two images- not a postcard. He then said "don't call me a liar". I was completely shocked and said I never called you a liar and I don't think that's a very appropriate response. He said "well don't put words in my mouth". I said I never put words in your mouth I just said I ordered a card with an image on the front and one inside. Shockingly he said you know what- just take them and go elsewhere and waved his hand at me. He completely escalated and was combative in a situation where I was in no way being rude or aggressive. He could have easily said if you want "folded cards" we will have to charge you more and I would have happily paid for them. I've lived in Woodbury for over 25 years. I've never in my life been treated by or talked to like that by someone at any store anywhere. I was so shocked I was literally shaking when I left. I turned at one point to a clerk working at another register with bug eyes like "what is happening here" and he shrugged his shoulders at me! Like this is how they talk to their customers. I went online afterwards to their website to see if they have had other issues with rudeness to customers (they have). I was in disbelief to see that the person I looked at appears to be the same person shown online as the franchise owner. Before I walked out I think he started to realize how out of line he was and he said well I can reprint them for you but at that point I was so in shock and couldn't believe what had happened I said no and left very shaken. Unbelievable.
