    The Smoking Goat - Pub!

Terrific new neighbourhood pub tucked away in an historic stone walled candlelit basement. The…read morenewly opened Smoking Goat bar has been totally remodelled and the result is impressive. If you remember the much missed Fouters Bistro you won't recognise the place now! The Smoking Goat is primarily a traditional pub with cosy nooks and crannies, real ales on tap and in bottles, and a great wee bar menu. The lunchtime options feature rare breed beef burger, venison sausage sandwich, pulled pork slider, smoked haddock fishcake, black pudding scotch egg with whisky mustard and more - all pretty imaginative stuff for this part of the world! Vegetarians are valued customers and it was a rare treat to find myself swithering over the menu. I narrowed things down to the red pepper falafel or the jerk spiced portobello mushroom burger with pineapple salsa. I went with the latter and it didn't disappoint, though I could have done with a few more of their lovely crisp fries on the side. Yay for free wifi without a password. I found it impossible to get a data signal down there so it came in handy. Customer-wise this is a good spot for socialising as well as dining. There are events going on throughout the week including pub quizzes and they have a pull down screen which I think they are showing the 6 nations rugby on, though this is not a 'sports bar' and there are no TVs. This is just a personal opinion, but I'd love to see the music turned down a wee notch to make conversation easier, and the lighting turned up a wee notch so the menu can be more easily read. Despite all the hard stone surfaces the acoustics were excellent. I can see this being a good venue for the occasional intimate music gig. Recommended!

The closest thing Ayr seems to have to a hipster pub. Not in itself a recommendation but mentioned…read moreto give an idea of the general decor and atmosphere. Stocks a good range of newer beers in cans & bottles as well as having a couple of ales on handpull. Probably does cocktails to an extent. Quite a few nooks & crannies to sit in, giving it a nice amount of privacy if that's what you're looking for. I can see how the low lighting would be an issue when reading the menu but, in terms of just being in for a drink it was okay.

I was particularly impressed that they have a separate vegetarian menu with items that are also vegan or can be prepared vegan. The note on the menu stating that parmesan cheese is not vegan gave me a chuckle and I suspect it might be borne of some weird conversation they've had with a pedantic customer. But in any case parmesan is made with animal rennet so is neither vegan nor vegetarian. Loved my meal as did my fellow diners. Nice staff and hats off to the person who chose the colour scheme and decoration. If I've one tip it would be to stay the heck away from the conservatory when the sun shines unless you like eating in a sauna. Lovely views of Arran and the Carrick hills. Worth a visit.

They serve high quality pub grub and a decent selection of ales at reasonable prices. There are specials on certain days of the week, as well as an early bird menu. When I last went they were doing a Friday Night Steak Night offer - £30 got you two generous steak dinners and a bottle of wine. I didn't have that but it looked quite good and was obviously packing the punters in. Would recommend it for informal dining in a friendly atmosphere.

It was a Saturday night so the bar…read morewas pretty full when we arrived, but they had a table reserved for us, and after checking into our room, we squeezed ourselves into a cosy corner beside the wood-burning stove. Toasty! The food menu was surprisingly accomplished for such a small country pub, and I was particularly impressed by their offer to make me a special fish pie without the dairy filling. Jolly tasty it was too. We got chatting to a couple of friendly locals who were eating at the next table, and ended up spending the rest of the evening with them at the bar. Everyone was so friendly, we felt like we'd been coming here for years despite it being our first visit! The bedroom was large and quite well-appointed, they had made good use of the space under the roof eaves to fit in a large king-sized bed. The en-suite was compact but had a good shower, and everything was spotlessly clean. There's no phone signal so you do feel cut off from the outside world a bit, but the wi-fi is good throughout. The River Ayr runs past the inn and has some lovely peaceful walks in either direction along the banks. Overall, a great find. We thoroughly enjoyed our wee break and would happily stay here again. A perfect getaway location.
