If you remember the much missed Fouters Bistro you won't recognise the place now! The Smoking Goat is primarily a traditional pub with cosy nooks and crannies, real ales on tap and in bottles, and a great wee bar menu. The lunchtime options feature rare breed beef burger, venison sausage sandwich, pulled pork slider, smoked haddock fishcake, black pudding scotch egg with whisky mustard and more - all pretty imaginative stuff for this part of the world! Vegetarians are valued customers and it was a rare treat to find myself swithering over the menu. I narrowed things down to the red pepper falafel or the jerk spiced portobello mushroom burger with pineapple salsa. I went with the latter and it didn't disappoint, though I could have done with a few more of their lovely crisp fries on the side. Yay for free wifi without a password. I found it impossible to get a data signal down there so it came in handy. Customer-wise this is a good spot for socialising as well as dining. There are events going on throughout the week including pub quizzes and they have a pull down screen which I think they are showing the 6 nations rugby on, though this is not a 'sports bar' and there are no TVs. This is just a personal opinion, but I'd love to see the music turned down a wee notch to make conversation easier, and the lighting turned up a wee notch so the menu can be more easily read. Despite all the hard stone surfaces the acoustics were excellent. I can see this being a good venue for the occasional intimate music gig. Recommended!

I can see how the low lighting would be an issue when reading the menu but, in terms of just being in for a drink it was okay.

Although we showed up at 9pm, the kitchen was still open for a late dinner. We decided to try the duck confit as a starter, along with Ox cheek. Although the duck confit was not my cup of tea, the Ox cheek was amazing! We also decided to order the fish and chips, which came with a side of mashed peas and was delicious! It is a bit pricey if you don't order on the lunch menu, but nonetheless, worth it. The restaurant has a vey comfortable ambiance. It feels very classy, yet has a rustic charm. This is definitely a nice restaurant and bar, with prime location along the harbour. It's worth a visit if your in Ayr!

They were out of ice at closing time, but I was ok, as I just ordered a cider. Apparently, again, this wee pub is always packed, and this is where our friends local woman's rugby team hangs out here for nights out. Loads of Guinness signs and memorabilia on the walls, made for a cozy wee place.

I love the history and beauty of the building that this pub/restaurant is located in. The building was built in 1845 as a Free Church. (They closed their doors as a church in 1981) It was part of the Great Disruption of the Church of Scotland. That was a time when over 400 clergy separated from the Church of Scotland to form The Free Church of Scotland. This place is rich in history and is still very beautiful.

The music was great, and just loud enough to make the background noise disappear, but not so loud that we felt the need to scream over each other to have a conversation. Plenty of seating in the front of the pub and loads in the back should the front get busy. We only stayed for a few drinks and headed on up the road to the next pub.

It has long been the only place in Ayr that would play what most people would call alternative music. Unfortunately, the playlist is almost identical every day/night of the week. The regulars tend to be a bit cliquey so it isn't necessarily the friendliest place to be. Granted, it is not a bad place to go when you're young and don't know any better and the drinks are usually dirt cheap - but the general consensus is that you need the drink to fool yourself into thinking you are having a good time there.
