WORST SALON IVE EVER WENT TO! This was by far the worst salon I have ever went to. I went to this salon a couple days ago and I told the lazy young dude the haircut I wanted. He then completely ignores what I said and starts cutting MY hair the way HE wants it. My coworker recommended this salon to me and I finally got a chance to visit today. I saw some positive reviews for Alice so when I called to make an appointment, I made sure to book it with her. She was able to accommodate me the same day about 30 minutes later. The salon is not hard to find, it's located in Oakland Chinatown. There are 2 options for parking, street or garage. I was lucky to find a parking spot across the street. Cost is $2.50 per hour for metered parking. When I walked into the salon, there were 2 other people getting their hair done but Alice helped me right away. I showed her a picture of what I was looking for and she delivered perfectly. She took the time to carefully cut my hair and the length was just what I requested for. I could tell she was a very attention to detail type of stylist when she measured my layers on both side of my face to make sure they are align with each other. Cost was very affordable given the quality of service. My haircut took about 35 minutes and the cost without tip was $25. Cash only. She is a busy stylist, right after I got up from the chair, she was ready for another customer. She gave me her cell phone so I can personally schedule an appointment with her in the future. I visit them regularly to have my hair cut pre-COVID and post-COVID now. I was always told to come in whenever and it would be quick to get a haircut. I went in today as usual around 1ish pm. There was 1 person ahead of me and was told to wait. There were 2 stylists. Serval ppl came in AFTER me. I told the stylist that I wanted to wait for the female stylist and I had to wait for 2 freaking hours. I waited patiently and ppl who came after me just kept chatting with them and eventually got put in the front of the line because they come EVERY SATURDAY. I then ask to put me to whoever available, the answer I got was you will need to rejoin the wait-list. Where the F was the wait-list to begin with? There was no such thing exist the wait-list was in the MIND. If I didn't waited for 2 hrs already. I would've left long ago. This guy is pretty ridiculous. He cut my hair like cutting grass, and so rude. His comb scratched my ear many time. And when he cut my back head hair, my hairs was tear. He only used the water spray for my side hair, for reshape my hair. When he dried my hair, the tool he used also scratch my head skin so hard. I asked to change a person to help and he start argue with me after he hear my complaining. As a client, I need to be perfect as he said i need to be. An Absolute Gem, Ladies (& Gens)!!! Been coming here for (digital) perms and haircuts for over 5 years - Extremely thrilled by the result Every - Single - Time !!! I always ask for "Dong", the Master Stylist! They have other stylists as well and their work look good. I have always had Master "Dong" style my hair 100%. Not sure if the degree of magnitude of gratification translates here - I am one of the most picky individual I know, and when it comes to my hair, I would go the extra (my husband would characterize it as extreme) miles, e.g. driving 5 hours to a stylist that truly knows how to cut Asian hair (I have my Dad's hair genes, thick, heavy, & very slightly wavy, weighs down and flattens my head when it's not layered properly, straight or curly/permed). I also have my Dad's head shape, and it doesn't work as well on a female than a male because guys typically have short hair and volume can be easily attained to contour the head and face. I know short bob with bangs work very well for me, and I have had boyish hair cuts for many years and have gotten lots of compliments, but the recent 10 years, I've opted to have long curly hair and it is very important that the haircut (layering) and perm (right size rolls, and digital perms preferred for the natural and long lasting curls) are done properly! The pricing is extremely fair - I am sure if you are used to getting your hair done at high end salons, you'd be shocked how much more $ you get to keep for your other shopping pleasures when you come to Ming's for all your hair needs. I don't see the hype of this place. People would wait all day for the barbers to come around to serve them. Per friend's recommendation, I made an appointment for my girlfriend. They said come in at 3pm, and a barber should be available to serve you. Okay, good. She gets there at 2:45 and was told to wait for the next available barber. 3:30 came and went. 4:00, 4:30, as she sees people come in and gets served right away. Finally, at 5:00 she asked if she will be served today. The man told her to wait a bit longer. Another two customers came and got barbers right away. 5:30 came, and she asked again. The man finally said they couldn't serve her because they close at 6. Now, we know 3 things: 1. There must be a pecking order, but who knows what you need to give up to get on it. 2. This place has an idiotic "appointment" system runs like there is no appointment system. Barbers will choose you if they know you. 3. The place has a very apathetic and flippant attitudes with their customers. That's a big no-no. I can be wrong. Maybe if you are their friends, they will serve you better. I needed to get a haircut before Chinese New Year and my regular lady was on maternity leave so thanks to Yelp, I came across Ming's Salon. Ironically it's right next door to Perfect who I use to go to years ago but stopped when one of the stylist (not the owner) kept trying to upsell products I didn't need as well as try to push off items on her other customers too. So onto Ming's - men's cuts are $8 but my cut ended up being $16 without the wash so I guess it's about average for a Chinatown cut. They have lots of stylists so despite it being busy, there wasn't a wait which was nice. The cut itself ended up being shorter than I wanted though as even though I specified I only wanted layers in the front, he layered the back as well which might be nice in the summer but a bit cold in the winter. read more

This is my most favorite place to receive a good quality, worth my money hairstyle and hair dye. I received a wonderful shampooing and condition from this lady, and she's really friendly. The hair stylist who did my hair looks like a young man, and no offense, I enjoy getting my haircut from a young looking person. (I find that they actually know what you want and can view in your perspective). I just pulled out the hairstyle I want, and he gave me what I want for the regular price of a haircut. Hair dye is worth it too. $20 for hair dye + someone helping you? If you can't dye your hair by myself , this is totally worth it. Because good quality hair dye cost almost the same amount. They are very clean and efficient. They are bilingual, speaks Chinese English and mandarin. Very convenient spot too. Love it a lot! Been coming to Ming's for ages. First came here when they first opened and had a special for their grand opening. Donny, the owner and stylist, is from Hong Kong and knows how to cut asian hair. I liked it so much, i've been coming here ever since. The prices for guys is super cheap -- $8 for a cut. The wife and sister have also been here but get charged for washing and a longer cut, so their's run up around $15 or even $20. Still, they are very personable and are very busy. No point trying to make an appointment cos you'll have to wait til the next stylist is available anyway. When Donny isn't around or too busy, i've also tried the other stylists and they're all pretty good too. But i still try to get Donny if he's around. Like the other reviewer said, communication can be tricky but i mix it up with my broken Cantonese and English and we do ok. They do their best to please. read more

I have been coming to this place for over a year they always charge me 28 if I shampoo and straighten, and 18 if I just straighten. The last time I came here they wanted to charge me 45$. I didnt understand why I got that kind discriminated treatment from this place. I loved the guy who would always do my hair. I've had a ton of experiences with Chinatown hair salons. Many of them are terrible, never let the price be the sole determinant! But after about five different hair salons, I finally went to Ming's and I've been going there for around four years now. I usually just walk in and ask what the wait time is before I sit down. It's been a while and my favorite hairdresser is no longer there. Wanted some split ends removed, top texturized to create volume and my hair curled when blow dried. I was assigned a younger kid who spoke some basic English. Maybe that's was the challenge. The result was a very basic trim. Any hairdresser who has worked on my hair will soon realize that it needs lots of product to hold curl and volume. He used no product and hence, no happiness. Young and new barber cut my hair very short and did not follow the image i showed at all. This place could be great if you have certain kind of hair but this barber caused me to shave my head bold. I would NEVER come to this barber shop again. I walked in the shop and saw that it was empty. Two barber guy sat on a chair staring at me. None of them wants to get up and give me a haircut. I was standing there feeling lost. Finally, a young guy with highlight hair wearing a cross necklace got up and escorted me to the chair. When he touched my hair, he complaints that my hair was too thick and I need a shampoo. I got onto the shampoo chair and the barber wasn't even paying attention to washing my hair. He was listening to the other barber's conversation. I felt like he doesn't even know how to wash people's hair. He kept scratching my scalp and stop and scratch it again. After shampooing, he escorted me back the chair. At the end, he told me that it was finished and he charged me $20. I asked him why $20? He said $12 for haircut + $8 shampoo (which he didn't do a good job). After I gave him the $20 bill, he put his hand out and told me "You need to give me tip." I was pissed when he said that. He didn't do a good job on my haircut and shampoo. He was lucky that I was late for my doctor appointment or else I would have a conversation with his boss. read more

So I don't know about how the other hairstylist are but the one I had was HORRIBLE !!! I asked for only bangs and I didnt want my hair trimmed too much maybe like an inch or two MAX! The guy who cutted my hair worked the whole time on my hair and not my bangs at all! He cut at least 4 inches off my hair. For reference my hair was up to my mid torso and he cutted until it reached my shoulders!! As for my bangs I wanted the see through China bangs that landed right below my eyes! This guy cut it on top my eyebrows and to make things worst he cut only like 1/4 of my front hair that were suppose to be my bangs that short do it flys up! I didn't have high expectations but I kept telling him what to do, showed him pictures but he didn't pay attention to it and he was like yea yea I got it! read more

the place is a secret find in chinatown. located between 7th and franklin right across the street from the chinese restaurant legendary palace... in chinatown, there are a plethora of hair salon - there is even two on this street so don't get confused. they are right next to each other. one is called perfect hair cut and the other is called ming's salon. you'll know you're at ming's because they are the busier of the two. WARNING: the employees do NOT speak english. or very very very limited english. you must come with someone who speaks cantonese/mandarin. luckily, my mom knows someone who works there and was able to talk to them and bargain for me :] Sam worked on my hair - a short, metro looking chinese man. he owned a salon in china but decided to come here to work, in addition he has 10+ years of experience.. i had only came in for a bang trim but then he convinced me to do a lot more. i came in after work around 6 and didn't leave til about 7ish.. before coming here, my hair was a mess.. i was trying to grow it out from an A-line style to a longer shoulder length hair but my hair was in the between stages and was flaring out. yuck. somehow, he trimmed my hair so that it LOOKED longer.. and then he did two things to my hair. i asked him what it was called and he told me in chinese.. i asked if he knew what it was in english so i could do some research on it online and he looked at me like i was stupid to even ask that. haha i got this product that straightened my hair and then a product that softens my hair.. after a few days since the haircut i can vouch that those products does what it says and im still loving my haircut. i'm definitely coming back and would recommend this place!! read more

My first experience with this place and its a decent place for a haircut. I have thin hair, and normally charged $12-$15 from Asian hair salons. I got a hair wash and cut for $21. The wash was nice, only thing I did not like was water was really close to getting into my ear canals. People are rude and they treat your head like a ball tossing left and right, scraping ears with combs and this one time cut my friend's face with scissors and pretend nothing happened at all.
