After not visiting SF Chinatown for quite some time, it was quite interesting to see that even the counterfeit Hong Kong/Chinese movie DVD shops in the area have mostly shuttered (while the tourist shops selling made in China trinkets continue to operate), and even the once humongous imported DVD and CD shop nearby has downsized and relegated to selling random crap as a result of restructuring the business to survive (or barely make ends meet as I'm sure the rents have skyrockted).
What's even more interesting is the sudden surge of shops (there are now seemingly two or three all next to one another) that specialize in live poultry slaughtered to order, or basically what amounts to "fresh chicken and fowl".
Ming's takes it a step further....lowering prices to the point of literally DIY (do it yourself)....and that is you can choose to slaughter them at home and defeather. A brown feathered/yellow fur chicken (whole) would be $8 to take home alive. They have live quail too, at the bargain price of $1.50 each. The "menu" of what they have is entirely in Chinese, and they're really not out to cater to people on Yelp, and you probably will never see a "People Love Us On Yelp" sticker by the entrance.
While poking my head in today to visit, it was pretty funny to see local Chinese/Toishanese shoppers put down their purchase, a large brown paper bag with a few holes poked on the top, and the bag was literally moving/vibrating on the ground, and you can hear the "gok gok gok gok gok!!!". For sure whatever was inside the bag wasn't singing "yeeeeeeeah, sexy lay-deh!". Henny Penny not going to be Kentucky Fried tonight for sure (or fried Gangnam style like Gangnam Chicken to be opening shortly in San Mateo), but probably poached with some garlic, scallions, herbs, spices, ginger, salt, and some luvin....maybe made into some delicate brothy goodness, or perhaps a claypot stew of some sort with or without medicinal Chinese herbs.
PETA vegan types, weak willed/weak minded people, and for those who are otherwise ignorant of Chinese food culture and tradition, are really recommended to stay away from these kinds of shops, and just stay put with a restaurant like Lucky Creation vegetarian, or go no further than Red Blossom Tea shop where it feels safer. These are non endangered birds raised for slaughter, we're not talking about those random cases in China where bear liver is harvested for their bile, or shark fin.
I mean, this is not The Hump in Santa Monica where whale sashimi is being served.
Chinese food culture prides itself in obtaining the best and freshest ingredients available. I can imagine a gazillion food bloggers in Hong Kong that would salivate at the sight of a poultry shop like this....because of so many avian bird flu H5N1 cases of late, that numerous delicious chicken dishes in Hong Kong, no longer taste the same, because they have to resort to frozen (re: "fresh on ice") chicken sourced elsewhere. That salt baked chicken, hainan chicken rice, empress chicken, soy sauce chicken etc, will no longer taste the same.
Anyhoo, I also would not recommend slaughtering and defeathering these hens yourself, unless you know what the hell you are doing. Some of the customers purchasing them obviously know a thing or two, or know a butcher...and it probably goes without saying a few them grew up or came directly from the farms in Toishan/Taishan area, almost like 2nd nature to them.
But I am curious what good ol' fried chicken would taste like from chicken this yay phre$h, or yakitori for that matter. read more
