I attribute the change to practicing ChenTaichi for the last four years and for that reason alone, I would continue practicing at home as well as taking classes. Other benefits I've experienced involve my metabolism. Being a very lazy person who hates exercising, I am thrilled that by just practicing TC, I am speeding up my metabolism...and that's a wonderful thing since I love eating. By the way, I find that this was the fastest way to tone legs and buttocks..for me it was just a matter of 3-4 classes before I saw results! Prof. Szondi is the 20th century representative of the Chen family of Chenjiaguo, the originators of Taiji. What he teaches is exactly what is sanctioned by his teacher, Grandmaster Zhu Tiancai, 19th generation of the Chen family. These are not instructors who are certified on a weekend or even in one year, but life-long practitioners who are dedicated to their art, and to the principles of Yin and Yang. I just attended one of Prof. Szondi's workshops geared for new students or would-be-students. I am no longer a 'new' student, but his workshops are always intense and I am still amazed at the complexity of this art. Try to catch one of Prof. Szondi's workshops, and I will see you there! The academy has high standards and expectations of the families and children who enroll. The instructors provide guidance and leadership and instill important qualities in children that are necessary to grow and mature and be strong community members. I love the location and how close it is to home and work. My boys have attended Tae Kwon Do, Judo, summer camps, leadership training and their after school program. I highly recommend their after school program as an amazing alternative to other offerings in the area. They have a focus on education and Tae Kwon do/Judo practice.

They understand the principles and techniques of Aikido and clearly explain what they are doing. If a student is struggling with a particular technique, they find new and creative ways to break it down and help both beginners and advanced students grasp the essential principles. This is done in an encouraging and non-judgmental manner. They know that everyone who studies the martial arts will have difficulties with some of the moves and techniques. There is a lot of personalized attention. A unique aspect of the Atlanta School of Aikido is their emphasis on the development of internal power. This is the power that true masters of the martial arts over the centuries have possessed, but have taught to very few of their students. The instruction at this dojo includes a step-by-step method for both developing this power and testing it. As with all skills in the martial arts, the development of internal power takes time and work. It is extremely helpful, however, to have a clear roadmap and instructors who can guide the students along this path.

They also have a lot of classes available which I really appreciated! Nothing is worse than a studio that only offers one (or zero) hot flow classes each evening. The heating of the studio is good, I can get my sweat and detox on. Some studios are luke warm and I need to wear a hoodie to get a sweat going. Most of the instructors were great, however one was lackluster and was also in poor physical shape. Considering I only had 5 new student classes to use I wish I had that one back. I think the pricing is a bit high for me, which is why I didn't sign up for a membership. Heck, the 5 class new student package for $50 is VERY pricey considering competitors offer 30 day unlimited for new students for around $30-$50.

I haven't taken a hot yoga class in probably 20 years, so personally I was not prepared for how difficult the class would be. Didn't matter though, the instructor was so great and reassured me that there's no pressure to perform it all, and to listen to what my body is telling me. So I did. I took it easier than the regulars, but still left the class feeling amazing! This class may be tough for beginners, but everyone from the teachers to the students and even the owners are so supportive, you instantly feel comfortable. The students are so friendly, they even gave me pointers on classes I should join. I must add, I was even more excited to support them as a black owned business. Both husband and wife were there to greet everyone that walked in, knew their patrons names, & even took the time before class to give me a tour of their facility. They have mats available for those that don't have their own yet or forgot them at home. They have multiple restrooms and also a shower room, one for women and one for men. They even let you know about upcoming events and classes that can benefit you personally! It's always intimidating trying to get into a new fitness routine, but they certainly make you feel at home & like part of their tribe. I'm excited to try out some of their other classes to get a feel for what I like best. If you get a chance to check them out, I definitely recommend taking a class to see how great your body feels after!

I practice Northern Shaolin with this organization, so it's only that one class that I'm…read morespecifically referring to in this review. I've practiced other martial arts in the past, and I've found my home here. The class structure is usually some warm-ups, followed by some conditioning and some drill work, concluded with a bit of forms work. There is a great breadth to the types of movements that a student learns, but they are all martially applicable. A good deal of time is spent on learning the applications to the techniques and practicing with classmates in order to become effective in their use. The one note of warning is that there is quite a bit of physical conditioning that is taught in this class, as this style can be physically demanding. Accommodations are made to suit the various fitness levels of the individual student, but you will definitely be encouraged to work hard and try your best. Chances are that you will "feel it" the next day. If are open to engaging in that level of exercise, then you'll probably have a lot of fun. If you take issue with the thought that your muscles have actually been made to do some work, then you probably won't attend more than one class.

Class typically begin with a variety of stretching exercises and a circuit drill for conditioning. Following that we get into the substance of Nothern Shaolin. There is a heavy emphasis on forms and applications. I really like how we learn how each movement in a form could be used practically. We will also learn meditative techniques, history of Northern Shaolin and other styles, and the theories behind our martial practice. There is a lot of individual instruction in class. It is not uncommon for one student to be working on one thing while other students are practicing something else, but it never feels like you have been forgotten or excluded. Also common is that other students will momentarily pause what they are doing to offer you guidance or answer your question. The instructor is very knowledgeable, not just on Northern Shaolin but many other styles. Many times in class he will teach us some aspect of other styles for our martial education. We also are expected to learn the history of our lineage of Northern Shaolin which I think is really neat. There are two unique things about our class that I absolutely love. First, the classes are outdoors. While sometimes in extreme weather (August heat and January cold) I wish we had an indoor space, I almost always enjoy practicing Kung Fu outdoors. The second thing is the social aspect. Typically after class we go out for drinks and food. That aspect was a pleasant surprise as there I have really bonded with my fellow students and they all have interesting and diverse lives to learn about. One thing to note - I think the class structure has changed some since Phillip wrote his review. While physical conditioning is a part of class, I don't think it is as intense as when Phillip wrote his review. Still, you will get a good work-out and it will get you into shape (I have had many friends note that I look to be in the best shape in a long time.)
