I had called ahead of time to see if they had rental clubs- they do! I booked a tee time online- very easy. Create an account (which works for several courses) and book your time, pay at the counter when you arrive. Parking was easy. They have a lot in front of their club and restaurant as well as an overflow lot across the street. I checked in and was offered ladies clubs, men's regular and men's stiff shaft clubs. I chose the ladies but I wanted a senior men's graphite. Oh well. Total charge $58 greens fees, $16 large bucket of balls, rentals $40. I was advised to grab a cart because the practice facility is across the street and kinda far. I strapped the bag on the back, unloaded my water and coffee into the cart and noticed I did not have a putter. The clubs were so new- the plastic was still on the driver. I don't think they'd ever been used before. I went back to the shop and they offered me a selection of used putters, I believe from the sets of members bags!!! The three options were not anything fancy, were all the same style and all actually weighted the same, so I picked based on the grip. The practice facility was well marked with signs all the way there. It was far. Large bucket of balls was dispensed using my ticket code at the machine. It was in fact, large. Next time I can do the medium. I picked a spot and I used my range finder to see how far the rental clubs would get me so I could plan my game. After warming up and getting my distances, I went to the sand trap / chilling area and then back to the cart to drive to the putting area which is near the tunnel. I met up with the other 3 randoms at the club, 10 min prior to our tee time. The carts have gps, which is useful. They also tell you the topography of the greens. There were no cart restrictions that day, so we could drive all over except for the par 3s. The carts did not have a cooler, they did not have a rake, and they did not have any magic sand for divots. In fact, the course hasn't been open this season for very long because there was only ONE trash can on the course and ZERO rakes. No magic sand boxes either. I assume they have all these things in season, but I don't really know cuz it's my first time golfing here. The threesome I paired with kept mentioning how good the food is at the restaurant there- Gypsum Grill. We stopped at the bar so they could pick up long drinks and fireball and beer on draft. They were having a Sunday funday for sure. I used the restroom in the club- there are two. I did not see any along the course. The course has a lot of hills. I didn't notice any water. It was forgiving in the sense that some fairways are side by side but the greens were challenging. Cart paths are clearly marked. Tee boxes and fairways and greens are all in great shape. We started at 11:51 and finished by 4:30, so it was a bit slow. I will say, my group was in no hurry so we were part of the problem. The weather started out cold, then got sunny and beautiful, but super windy and grey by the end of it. But I was still happy to be out on the course. At the end, I went to the shop to return the rentals and get my drivers license back. I also picked up a hat off the sale rack. I'll definitely come back. This course's website says they are open if the weather is above 40. They also have a 3 hole par 3 course that opens on May 1st. Played 18 here for the first time, and had a good time! Challenging course, no doubt, but a lot of fun! Beautiful views, and very well maintained. It is a little pricey at $60/person, but makes for a fun outing now and again. They do not serve alcohol, so be sure to pack a cooler. The driving range is just down the road, and has a nice practice area for chipping and bunkers. I've also taken lessons here with Brian, and they were great. He helped me make a few small changes, and really improved my game! read more

2 holes into playing 9 they had someone drive out to us to say we needed to hurry up.. keep in mind it's a Wednesday at 1pm with 2 of us playing. The cart is disabled half the time and can only drive backwards unless you're on the sidewalk. Our 2 carts can only drive as fast as you can walk and can not make it up that hills on the cart path. The only reason I'm giving this place a 2 stars is because of the staff. Amazing staff, very friendly. I wish I got their names but sweet man working where you pay and amazing women working the bar. read more

If this course wants to stay relevant and have loyal customers, they need to stop scheduling tee times 5 minutes apart. 3 hours to play 9 holes is atrocious. 7 hours to play 18 is even worse. This place sucks. read more

Went to use the driving range, $10 for a large bucket of balls (90+ at least). The range itself is pretty standard, although there are not separated hitting areas that you find at other driving ranges. Their practice green has a nice chipping/ pitching area as well but the green itself is in pretty rough shape if you're trying to putt because of gravel and small rocks being literally all over it. The yardage markers also do not have the distances on them, and not all of them are marked on the sign that's by the hitting area, which is pretty annoying. How much effort would it take to fix that? Not much I'd imagine. The driving range on Alpine Ave has very well marked yardage markers, as well as grass and turf mats to hit from if you're looking for a little more bang for your buck. I believe they replace their range balls every two years as well, so you never get that occasional sliced or chopped up ball. Staff there was also VERY friendly and the place was very spacious (huge plus - who likes hitting right next to strangers?). read more

The driving range is $18 for a large bucket and there is practically nowhere to hit that is not filled with giant divots. Way over priced and poor quality. Recommend any other driving range in the area. read more

Closes 2 hours before sunset. Not open on sundays. Have to wait 4+ hours for a tee time. Rude staff. Don't bother trying to play here.

I've been a member here for 4 years until this year (just too many projects going on at home). The fairways are always in good shape. The greens were killed and replanted last fall and again this spring of 2015. They opened before they should have but what business can afford to stay closed for 2 months? The clubhouse is nothing to speak of, no alcohol (so bring a couple of brews in your bag) and play some good golf on some challenging greens with tough pin placements. Play the Blues for a longer course. The Blacks only once but if you're a long hitter - GO FOR IT! I've never had a Ranger ask me & my friends to skip holes or speed up. The staff is friendly and courteous. Do I wish that The Mines was open Sunday? That's a BIG 10-4, but that gives me and my friends a chance to play other great courses. Lastly, ask yourself why you play golf (for all the amenities or the course)? Yeah, me too! read more

I have never written a review but I couldn't let the previous two sit unbalanced. I've been playing at The Mines for about 5 years, in and out of leagues. the staff has always been courteous . No one has ever stopped us from getting refreshed between nines. The course is not an easy one and it is often played by better golfers since it is probably the most challenging public, urban course here. It is not a good place for novices. That being said, Todd and Melanie (the pros) have gone out of their way to teach the game to newcomers. About not being open on Sundays... This is Grand Rapids. And in this city, at least, family and faith are still a big deal. It's a great course that you will leave re-thinking many of your shots and want to return to try again. read more

If I could I would give this course a zero or negative number. My son and daughter-in-law to me and her Dad here on father's day week. The condition of the fairways was ok, but the greens were horrible. However, all this aside, it was the staff that made this course poor. We were a foursome, and everyone else that day was playing in twosomes. We would occasionally let twosomes play through when they caught up to us. However, the course marshall came around and basically told us to play faster or skip holes. We told him we had been allowing people to play through and we would be stopping shortly (we were on hole 9) to get some lunch. He basically told us we didn't have time to stop and eat, that it wasn't acceptable for us to do that, and to get moving or get off. After that hole, we stopped and very quickly went into the clubhouse, got a candy bar, some water, and were about to leave. My son commented to the manager how he felt the response was inappropriate. We were basically told on Fridays they normally don't schedule foursomes and everyone else was playing faster as they were a twosome, and no, refunds wouldn't be offered if we wanted to just stop after nine holes. So we went on, skipped hole #10 and by the end of 18 holes, we had people catching us again. Even though we had a good time with our kids, I will NEVER play here again. The staff honestly was rude, and it was their mistake at scheduling a foursome in the middle of a bunch of twosomes. So if you do play here after reading this, I caution you to ask what types of parties will be behind you, as you will be told the same thing, hurry up or get out. read more
