    Problem Plugs
    Mike R.

I've had mixed dealings with Miners Ace Hardware in Arroyo Grande. Those inside the store have always been helpful and attentive when I've been searching the store for various items. Recently, I was looking for a particular Webers BBQ without much luck. This past weekend, I found a model close to the one I wanted. Missey was extremely helpful in tracking it down for me even though there were few left. I made my purchase and I'm now excited for it to be delivered so I can use it and entertain this summer. The outdoor garden centre is another matter entirely, however. Amy (sp?) who I gather is a manager, can barely be bothered. They seem disinterested in everything other than watering plants. I purchased an expensive fountain in connection with my new landscaping project. And while I'm appreciative of their efforts to bring it into the rear garden, they removed all the rubber plugs (apparently to drain water?) which they didn't replace. I wasn't able to squeeze the rubber plugs myself and have them stay as they kept slipping loose. I spoke to Amy in the garden centre who told me I would have to replace the plugs, using silicon, holding them in place till they dried, then silicon an exterior ring around each (all 3). Why didn't they do this before delivery of this $1,200 fountain? Isn't that what a customer forward retailer would do--repair what they had pulled apart? So she handed me a small tube of silicon and told me to do it myself as I was apparently a bother to her watering. I had to go out and purchase a pump to remove the water that had been collected in each tier. Then I had to replace each plug holding the plugs in place for some time (longer than the minute or two she said) as it dried to prevent them from popping out. All while on my knees which isn't easy for someone of my age. Then I realized the second tier had no plug--it was missing. I had to return the next day to see if I could get the missing plug. Amy told the woman who was helping me that "he" was here yesterday--as if I wasn't standing there and was just bothering her again. The helpful associate found me a rubber plug, which I took home. It doesn't fit and is too rigid to push in. So I'm sitting here with a $1,200 fountain from Miners Ace that doesn't work. and I'm furious. Unfortunately, customer service isn't known to Amy in the garden centre. While I will continue to do business inside, I'm done with the garden centre. I spent a great deal there in order to landscape and I'm extremely unhappy with their indifferent attitude to their bread and butter, their customers.

Still on the trail of succulents, we stopped by the Miner's Ace in Arroyo Grande. The store is kind of wedged into a shopping area along the creek, so parking is sometimes a challenge, but we were able to park right in front. I slid into the store and took a right turn to the plant area. They do have almost the same selection as the San Luis Obispo store, but it is displayed along a fenced area by the parking. I was impressed by their display of colorful pottery, and the condition of the plants seems good. I searched the varieties, and found a local plant I had not seen anywhere else, a Dudleyana from Los Osos, as well as a short fuzzy plant, so they made their way home with me. Checkout was a breeze, and I was happy with a gpleasantexperience!

    Beautiful plant selection

The store is a lot larger than it looks like from the outside, so once you go inside, it just continues to go way back. One of the cons with this place is everything is unnecessarily expensive. I told him the story and he said she was the dept manager and it was her say. I told him he was not any better at customer service than she. He scoffed at me and said they have great customer service. I will let you judge. I will never shop there again.

While walking about doing my touristy look-ee looing around downtown Pismo Beach, I spied this shop. The colorful 6 feet tall metal T Rex caught my eye. It was in front of the shop next to the shops garden art outdoor gate. Well I stepped right in, garden art galore. Water fountains, wall art, wind chimes, decorative rain spouts, statues, stepping stones, seating, etc.... in tons of styles from Big Foot hunters to tranquil Asian Zen to serene religious to charming English countryside to beach theme to fairy whimsy to funky industrial modern to retro mid century....so on. The interior shop had more art, plus hardware inventory. They even carried a small selection of bbqs. They had a charcoal Weber at a summer close out pricing. Also if you have a pesky rodent or bird issue, they got you covered. I am somewhat familiar with that issue since I currently battled the takeover of a portion of my roof to a flock of birds. I was impressed with the bird deterrent inventory. Better than the big box. The shop even has a website. Pismobobs.com. #PismoGardenArtAndHardware

I've been trying my best to avoid corporate stores, and support local. But This place and Brisco's are making it very difficult. When I arrived, one worker (hired 4 days ago) commented to the other how customers always come rolling in 30 min before closing. As I had just discovered this Lumber Yard this morning, I was one of them. After wandering the yard, looking for the materials for my project, I came back into the sales office. There was another customer asking about solar tubes, and the salesmen were unable to help. This I understand. These guys may be knowledgable in some areas, but not all. But they completely shut this customer down. When he said he'd just go to Miner's, their response was, "Yes, please! I'd love for you to go to Miner's!". After the customer had left, they both kept discussing how frustrating this customer was. That was all I needed to hear to know I don't need to support this local business. I'm not looking to have my butt kissed from the time I walk in, just a bit more courtesy than these guys were displaying. As I walked out, I commented, "Customers are SUCH a pain in the ass, huh?!" True to form, both sales staff answered enthusiastically YES! As I'm a contractor, picking up more and more local projects, I was hoping to find a good lumber yard to do business with. Guess I'll keep looking.
