I sought out Carolina Partners after having a different mental health practice in the area…read morereschedule my appointment 4 times! I'm really glad I did. I called the intake line for CP and was set up with an appointment with Paula Sumner about 2-3 weeks later. Paula is fantastic. Her style is personable and real - she's not afraid to crack a joke and "gets" sarcasm so you can really be yourself around her. This is a rare quality in my experience! She approaches mental health as a collaborative process with her patients, taking time finding the right solution for each symptom/issue, rather than just prescribing whatever knock-'em-out pill is being pushed by the pharma reps this year. She has a wide scope of training and expertise which includes overall physical health, mental health, and alternative therapies as well. Over several months, Paula and I have found the right fit of meds/holistic therapies/lifestyle changes to truly improve my quality of life...something I have never been able to achieve through a traditional psychiatrist. If you are interested in having a true partner in mental health and well-being, Paula Sumner is a wonderful one.

Instead of just turning me down, as a few therapists did (albeit kindly), he researched low-cost therapists for me and emailed them to me after our phone call. If he cares this much about someone he's never met, and who he knows has no hope of becoming a patient in the near future, I can only imagine how nurturing and helpful he'd be to an actual patient. I'd give him a call. Oh, and as of this review, he offers free initial consultations!

For some people, the initial decision to see a therapist is a tentative one. It is not uncommon for people to wait months after getting a therapist's contact information to make the call, or to cancel as the appointment date nears. For those with prior therapy experience, the "right choice" of a therapist can also be tentative if past treatment attempts have been disappointing. Because I understand that a comfortable collaboration between a therapist and patient is primary to a successful outcome, and, that finding the therapist that "fits" for you is important, I offer a free initial consultation. In this way you can get a feel for my interpersonal style, and ask the questions that are important to you. Our initial meeting will be a conversation about your reasons for seeking treatment and the sources of stress in your life. I will ask some questions to help you get started, and/or to bring some of your concerns into focus. Proceeding at a pace that feels comfortable and safe for you, we will attempt to understand together how things came to be the way there are, and develop a pathway to emotional freedom. Respect for privacy will be fundamental to our work together.

I trust my coach, so I went, and it's been a profound experience. When we met I'd come to accept a certain amount of anxiety, sleeplessness and intestinal distress as the price of middle age. Nine sessions later it's easy to forget all the years I lived with those symptoms without giving them much thought. Steven touched and released traumas I didn't even know were stored in my body, including those held by my family going back for generations. I'm more present, connected and content than I was before meeting Steven. I even stand taller and breathe easier. Steven is a keen observer, a good listener and a skillful healer. He let me know that my issues were familiar to him, that he could relate to my tendency to focus on small and negative things, and that he'd worked hard to gain the insights that make him so good at what he does now. Steven is hugely curious, constantly learning and experimenting with different approaches to healing and wholeness and sharing the results with anyone who wants to engage him. This is a gift which I highly recommend accepting.

I feel trusted and trusting in his space and can allow my deepest, truest voice to be heard in his presence. There's no judgement from him, only kindness that strives to stroll through some painful past experiences. Steven is a most trusting, helpful, and skilled healer (and an excellent writer too!) He is persistent yet mindful of boundaries. He will nudge you over that small roadblock of your mind and help you to realize how easy (or difficult) it was to overcome. Then you will learn how glad you are to have gone through it. The world seems like a different place after a session with Steven. There should be a sign in Steven's office - Disclaimer: Clarity and mindfulness may follow. Self-understanding, rejuvenation, growth, tranquility, confidence, and mental relief all come to mind. Steven will put years of experience, research, reading, writing, singing, and learning into the path of your winding river. Aptly named: Flow Healing Arts.
