My car broke down going west over Donner Summit on January 16th during a heavy snowstorm. The CHP advised that AAA would not send for help in that area in bad weather. The CHP called Milne Towing who did get us towed to the Safeway parking lot in Truckee. I took the train back 200 miles, knowing I had to find a repair facility that would fix my car. I called Milne Towing, and advised them I could send a key since my car was alarmed. I was given an address in Truckee that (unknown to me) had no one present. I sent my key and alarm fob overnight. Then they said the didn't receive my key (which I tracked and had to be signed for), so then I contacted the Truckee Post Office, they showed me the signature of who signed for it. So since it was still snowing, I had to rent a 4WD car to go back up and meet the driver at the Safeway parking lot. ! When I reached out to them and asked "who in your business complex would sign for package of personal property addressed to Milne Towing, and not deliver it to you?" There are only ( I went up and confirmed) 4 other businesses in the complex! Why was I given an address to send my key if there was no one there to receive it, while my car was stranded in the Safeway parking lot!" I wanted compensation for my key and fob only, the cost of fuel and renting a 4WD to go back up there I was willing to forget, so I sent a letter! (Please see the attached response! ) So they got around to find my key and fob a month later! Only after I wrote them a letter asking for compensation did they even get back to me! First off, it is illegal to sign for any package not addressed to you, so who did they authorize to sign for them? After reading the other reviews on here which also evidence this company is to be avoided, this is not an isolated event! My car was abandoned on my street in front of my home when it got stuck in the snow (with plenty of room for other cars & snowplow to go by it). It was then towed by some local government entity at 8am the next morning, without any warning or notice provided. I noticed it was gone the following morning, when AAA was able to make it to the location for the tow I requested (AAA experienced delays due to backups). When I spoke with the Truckee police to try and find out what happened to the car, they indicated that it was towed by the County Public Works and taken by Milne Towing. County Public Works office denied this, so it is currently unknown what actual government (or other) authority ordered this. I then spent hours trying to get ahold of Milne Towing, including making numerous trips to their office, where no staff was present that day supposedly because they only had the one driver on-call, and he was out on service calls. I had to spend some $300 in Ubers and taxis to get there and back, given that I do not own another vehicle for transportation. Finally, I got hold of someone at the office, in-person, around 10pm that night. I'm there, in-person, ready to pay the insane price of $765 to get my car back (that's for all of the fees associated with getting a car out that was there for less than two full days) when I'm told, for the first time, that there is a police waiver on file for the car that needs to be signed, so I won't be able to get the car out that night. If it wasn't for the kindness of one Truckee police officer I was connected with earlier that evening out of desperation and panic, who filled out the paperwork for me and brought it to Milne towing that night so that I could get my car back, I would have spent probably another $1,000 and days trying to get that car out, given the multitude of hurdles in my way. This is simply beyond acceptable. It should not cost someone $1,000 in penalties because their car got stuck in the snow. If you look at state sanctioned prices for towing services and storage, they are around $45/day, at most. In addition, it is extremely problematic for a towing service to not provide immediate, 24/7 access to someone to get their property (car) back. Instead, Milne makes it as difficult as possible in order to rack up the time the vehicle spends in storage and charge more. This is extremely corrupt, and I have submitted requests to Truckee Town Council, the Town Manager, the District Attorney's Office, and Truckee PD change their practices in order to at least work within a reasonable system (and vendor) when it comes to towing people's cars during the snow season. For some of us, it is a matter of life & death to have access to our cars, especially during difficult weather. read more

My van was towed because of a flat tire. They would not allow me to get my items out of the van. It is against the law in California for them not to allow me to get items out of the van. They sold my van less than two weeks not allowing time me to pay for the tow and get my van out of their fenced yard . read more

We noticed that we had a flat tire first thing in the morning, and called another tow place first, who said that it would be at least 2 hrs until they arrived and $300 to get towed to a tire shop. Then I called Milne and they said it'd take about an hr to arrive and only $195. I said OK and then decided I'd expect them to arrive in 1-2 hours because I'm used to these estimates being pretty far off. To my surprise, they arrived in about 50 minutes. Jess was the driver and he was very professional and friendly. He got our car onto the truck pretty quickly and off we went. I would definitely use Milne again if I have the 'luck' of another flat tire in the Truckee area! read more

Ever had your car involuntarily towed and impounded? If so, I'm sure you'll agree that it's not a pleasant experience. When it happened to me I was furious with the private party that requested the tow. By the time I interacted with Milne staff I was ready for a fight. However, from my call to dispatch, to my interactions with Richard (who was the only one I met in person), to my philosophical debates with Joe on the phone, I was disarmed by Milne staff. They were respectful, careful with my vehicle, knowledgeable and the only responsible organization I dealt with in the encounter. Seeing that my honor was still not appeased, Milne metaphorically jumped in front of their client and took my bullet. This is what most impresses me as a small business owner. Everyone else I met that day had no problems passing their problems onto those they were supposed to be serving. I didn't want Milne to take the brunt of my attack, but they weren't going to allow those they represent to be hurt. If I had to hire a tow company to tow someone else, which I hope I never have to do, I would hire Milne. If I ever have my vehicle towed and impounded again, which I really hope never happens again, I hope it's towed and impounded by Milne. read more

This is a great towing service. We broke down on the I-80 and it was 17 degrees outside. We were on our way home to San Francisco. Hunter came and picked us up and took us all the way to the city from Trukee! It was like a 200 mile drive! He was super awesome and he let us know that if we needed to stop to go to the restroom or grab a snack he would gladly oblige! When we did stop, he told us to take our time and didn't rush us. The whole reason this place got five stars was because of the very professional tower who came to pick up my car. My car had to be towed due to a crank no start condition. The repair shop I use highly recommended Milne. I called initially on Thursday just to get a price quote. After calling around to a few places, Milne was by far the lowest. Anyways, I had an appointment with an auto repair shop right at 5 miles away from home when they opened at 7am. After getting off work, I called and was told that they couldn't provide an ETA for the tow due to being backed up with tows from the night before. I was a little hesitant to go ahead, but gave them my information anyway. They passed my information on to their tow driver Sean. Within 10 minutes Sean called me and told me he could be at my place by 6:00-6:15, after he took care of another job at a casino nearby. He said that he'd have the car at the repair shop right around 6:30. This was all at 5:00 am, right after getting off work the night before, so needless to say I was very pleased with Sean's responsiveness. Sean called me right at 5:55 am and he told me he was 5 minutes away. By 6:15 the car was loaded onto the tow, and we were on the way to the repair shop. We arrived at 6:30 on the dot. I cannot say enough about the customer service that Sean provided, and his quick response. This was only the second time I've had to have my car towed, and I couldn't be happier. While I don't want to have my car towed again due to a mechanical issue, if I do I'll definitely be a return customer for Milne towing. Just as a side note, I think this place gets a bad reputation because they provide parking management services for a number of different places in town. If you don't want your car impounded, just pay attention to your parking. To me it seems like common sense. I these guys came to pick up my car after my sister got into a fender bender, and the driver literally as I watched, ripped my side mirror off, and then, got out of the car and claimed that it was like that. It was bull, because the only thing wrong with my car was big dent in the bumper. I called his manager, Matt and we got into a yelling match and he told me that if his driver says it was there, he wasn't going to pay for it. On 10/20/15 our insurance road side assistance sent this tow company to pick us up at Kingvale off I-80, when tow truck driver showed up, he did not introduce himself in fact he didn't say one word to my husband or myself. He proceeded to hook our Ford Excursion up, and put it on the flatbed. My husband was keeping an eye on his procedures, as my husband has worked as an automotive technician since 1985 for Ford. Once he completed securing the vehicle, my husband asked if he could fix the front chain as it was rubbing on our coolant line. The driver said that's not your coolant line, my husband said its my power steering coolant line. He said where, my husband said "right there". Then he asked my husband to show him. So my husband pointed it out to him. He touch the coolant line to move it away from the chain but all it did was then rest against the chain. So my husband told him it was still rubbing. The driver then said he would have to lower it to fix it, then said, "do you want a tow or not?" My husband said I want you to fix it, and offered to get rags out of the back of our vehicle to wrap the hose line. He said no, my husband could not do that. Then repeated he statement, again and again, "do you want a tow or not", my husband said I want you to fix it, so he lower our vehicle and left. The tow truck that ended up taking us home, confirmed that the driver of Milne towing hook the vehicle up too far forward and was risking damage to our vehicle. Awful customer service. Do not call on them. I can not seem to erase the one star which is frustrating since I do not want to give them any star. My husband did get a hold of the management the next day. My car was towed by AAA to their yard and they wouldn't bring it down the mountain. I called Milne to see if they'd tow it and they were super friendly and willing. They kept my car safe overnight in their yard and then brought my car down the mountain the next day. I received it on time like they agreed to and overall a great experience. Out of state tourists visiting Truckee to spend our money locally during Truckee Thursday. Arrived around 12:30 pm to see the town and stay until the vendors arrived. Paid for parking until 6 pm. Local police called Milne Towing to tow our rental car at 3:10 pm because, unknown to us, we were in a parking lot where the food vendors would be setting up their tents. It took Milne towing exactly 30 minutes from the time of the call until they returned to their shop with our car. Exactly 2 hours passed until we arrived to reclaim our car. Milne Towing held our car hostage until we paid them $465.00! Highway robbery (literally)! What a nice racket between the local police and the towing company to rob from the tourists!! Employee (Richard) from Milne Towing, refused to lower the fee and/or call the owner for approval to do so. $270.00 towing fee when requested by police,$75.00 storage fee (REALLY??), and $120.00 gate fee (???). Milne Towing posts reasonable fees on their website! What a joke! We will never return to Truckee. read more

Joe @ Milne Towing helped us out in a real bind. A City CarShare car was stuck in Reno with a broken key in the ignition. He towed us back to his yard and had a locksmith extract the key without the alternate expensive option of re-keying the entire car. This was a huge money saver for us and he paid our bill on good faith. He stayed in touch constantly giving updates on the weather conditions and when he thought it would be safe to drive the car back to San Francisco. Bob from Milne was called out by Tesla Roadside Assistance to bring our car (and us) all the way to their service center off of Sierra College Blvd. He arrived sooner than we were told he'd be there, took great care of our Model S, and was a very nice guy to spend a couple of hours with on the way down "the hill" to Rocklin. We were very happy to NOT be stranded along I-80 climbing up to Donner Pass. This review actually goes back to April of 2014 when the service actually took place. Well I was in an accident and after they picked up my bike and charged me a very high fee. I get out of the hospital to find that they threw away, kept or didn't pick up a few hundred in parts and pieces. Seems like a high fee for not doing the whole job. I guess if they're the only place in town....what are you supposed to do. From my experience with them towing a wrecked vehicle, I would not want them towing a new or clean one. read more
