Other nearby attractions are Great Lakes Crossing, The Village outdoor mall, and the Palace of Auburn Hills. This area is 35 minute hike to Detroit though, but Troy is a short drive down I-75. The immediate area is very safe and friendly, and the restaurants next door are Palm Palace's Arabic food, TGIF, McDonald's as well as tons in the immediate area, many of which whom deliver. The inside has a cozy lobby and guest lounge area. It's really a no frills basic hotel, for those who want a solid notch higher than the Motel 6, Red Roof Inn, and Best Western tier. The rooms are comfortable and feel a decent amount nicer than a motel's room. The bed's mattress was one notch better than uncomfortable, so tolerable, yes! Premium comfort? Nah. One nice thing is that TVs were equipped with DVD players, so you can bring a movie! Bathroom and general floor space of the room was spacious, clean and tidy. Also, a feature I have often appreciated at Homesteads and Extended Stays is the included kitchen with a big fridge, sink, microwave, and stove. Honestly, the kitchenette looks like the kitchen at a basic apartment. All in all, if you're traveling and want to feel like you're somewhere special, romantic, trendy, or modern - this may not be your place. However, if you are the frugal traveler that wants a place to set up camp that plays the functions of home living with the kitchen offering, then this would be a good place for you. People that only eat out or rely on room service would find the kitchenette useless. Therefore, places like this appeal to many business trips where folks stay for several nights in a row. No pool, no in-house restaurant, etc. Just basic needs. There is a cheap in house laundry room though, which again appeals to extended stays. The room is a great value at the price I paid via Hotwire; below $40 to the night! Sweet! I would rate it a 2.5 star hotel, but with a 4-star Yelp rating for what it is.

We stayed in a deluxe suite for 5 days/4 nights. Price was reasonable at $78 a night. I'm surprised at some of the bad reviews here. The room was very clean, there was no dirty smoke smell and yes, towels are provided! Our room had a comfy king-sized bed, clean bathroom, large closet, sleeper sofa, desk, flat-screen TV, and a kitchen with a full-size refrigerator/freezer, 2-burner stovetop, coffee maker, microwave and a countertop with bar stools where you can eat. We had our 7-month-old along with us so the kitchen worked out real well for us. They also had free wifi. A previous reviewer said it was "slow as dirt" but I thought it was actually somewhat fast, both during the daytime and in the evenings when everyone was there. And we didn't pay for the upgrade. The staff were polite, professional and not pushy like some other hotels can be. The hotel is located in a very nice Detroit suburb with lots of restaurants nearby. Right next door is a BD's Mongolian Barbeque where you can get 20% off your food bill when you show your hotel card. Also from 6-9am there is a "grab-n-go breakfast" in the lobby with free coffee, granola bars and muffins. Nothing too special but hey, it's free! The only negatives were: - Upon arrival we were greeted with a sign that said there would be no water in the building from 8am-2pm because they were working on something. Kind of inconvenient, but luckily the water came back on around 12 noon. - The exhaust fan in the bathroom didn't work. Holy humidity! - Our TV remote was broken, but we called the front desk to get a replacement and they brought up another one within 5 minutes. - The AC/heater unit is rather loud when it kicks on and is drafty. Judging on our overall experience, we would definitely stay here again.

Maria, the hostess, was extremely hospitable and held to all that was promised for the weekend. The bedrooms were very comfortable. Some bathrooms were shared. which wasn't a big deal since it was all women for the weekend. All rooms are immaculately clean. The cropping room was very spacious and well lit with ODT lighting. Each person had their own 6 foot table with comfortable work chairs. The room was equipped with several machines, such as the Cricut, computer with printer, and Sizzix machines with dies. The hostess supplied a constant supply of beverages and snacks for the weekend. The meals that were provided were top notch considering any meal that I don't have to cook is gourmet to me!! Five meals, appetizers, and desserts are served. There is even a store within the house that carries the necessary supplies that may be needed if you should run short. I can't begin to tell you how nice this weekend was for me. The only drawback is that Maria has sold this to another hostess since she will be moving. I wish that I had found her sooner so I could have had the pleasure of her hospitality more often. I will return under the new owner and know I will receive the same warmth and attention that was given to me.

Worst hotel experience ever. While waiting to check in, I…read moreheard a customer voicing all of her complaints to the front desk and I thought she was crazy. Turns out she wasn't. I should've known something was up when they asked for $100 security deposit, I have never in my life paid a security deposit at a hotel. The elevator and hallways were a mess and gave a sleazy Motel vibe. However, they are under construction, and I figured it would be better when I got to the room. Wrong, first of all we reserved a two bedroom suite with a king and two queens. We were given a two bedroom suite with a king and a queen. Looking around, there was debris left on the floor from the previous guests. But what took the cake was the headboard of my room. I cannot tell you how disgusted I was when I saw what I suspect was sperm smeared all over the headboard. The sheets were dirty with stains and there were more signs of bodily fluids on the shower curtain. I was beyond disgusted. On my way back down to the check-in, there was a group of girls getting off the elevator who looked around and stated that the hotel looked like it was used for sex trafficking. When I made it to the front desk, the worker was extremely apologetic and offered me either a late checkout or another room. I wanted to state neither, but I booked the room under a deal online that was nonrefundable. I told her I would take a new room. The new room was a little cleaner and appeared to be without bodily fluids. However, it still was not the room we booked with one king and two queen beds, and it still had debris all over the floor. It was a horrible night, I could not believe I booked a room at this place. My comfort level was at -50.I placed a chair under the door for extra security and slept on top of the blankets of my bed. I was asked if I wanted to speak to the manager and I stated yes and waited at the front desk, but she did not come down. I left my name and phone number requesting a call and they assured me she would call me right away. However, I did not hear from her that day. I made a call to her the next day at which times she apologized and offered me a room upgrade if I stayed at her location again. Which was laughable at best. I will never stay at one of these properties ever again in my life. I called corporate and filed a complaint and I am currently waiting for a determination. Also, just a heads up that hundred dollar security deposit can take up to three- seven days to be returned.

Meadow Brook Hall was the last house I toured with my parents over our long weekend in Detroit…read more It's a Tudor Revival house built for the heiress to the Dodge fortune (Matilda Dodge Wilson), her second husband, and their children. Covering 88,000 square feet and with 110 rooms, the house is worth a tour. The architecture and design looks old English Tudor but almost all of the work was done by American craftsman (a different take than some other homes in the area which incorporated pieces of English manors that date back to those period and which the families needed to sell in the 20th century). We took a guided tour of the house on a Sunday afternoon, and it wasn't crowded (only a few other people on our tour). I think the home may be more popular as the wedding venue than a historic house to tour (perhaps because - in Rochester Hills - it's a bit of a hike from Detroit). Our tour guide was wonderful, informative and friendly. She wanted us to learn as much as we could and tried to get through as much of the story and the house as possible in the time allotted for our tour. Homes this size often have grounds that require as long to tour as the home itself. Unless we missed something, Meadow Brook Hall doesn't have that. We toured the house, walked over to a few exterior buildings (children's playhouses), and visited the gift shop. In that way, it isn't quite as an exciting home to tour as some others I've been to. But I really loved learning about the house, the Dodge family, and Matilda Dodge Wilson. If you have enough time to venture this far from Detroit, it's worth a visit, but I don't think it's as much of a must visit as some other historic properties in or closer to Detroit.
