You don't have to speak Italian to enjoy a proper panini and cappuccino! Don't feel silly with your printed "basic Italian" paper and point-to-order method, the locals are friendly.
Millozzi / Angelo is a nice café only a short walk from the major downtown sights and only a block from the Rome train station. They serve coffee, deserts, sandwiches and even pasta (while available) at different meal times. The prices are fantastic and the service is friendly.

This place is a café for the locals but they are still very friendly with the tourists. If you're staying nearby, I recommend stopping by for a bite before heading out.
