We needed to find somewhere to eat close to the ferry terminal as we didn't have s great deal of…read moretime until we had to catch the ferry ! The Gatehouse grill is right outside the terminal which was a good start , we explained to the waiter that we were short on time and he found us a table straight away ,he took our order which was chicken stuffed with ricotta and spinach, roasted vegetables and a tomato based sauce. The restaurant has a welcoming and smart feel , the staff are very knowledgeable about the menu and extremely attentive. The food arrived and it did not disappoint ,it was delicious ! It was a great experience and I would highly recommend the Gatehouse Grill!

My boyfriend and I went here for an anniversary meal after lots of searching for a decent place to…read morego that was within our budget and I'm so glad we ended up at the Gatehouse Grill! It's situated about the Royal Thai restaurant so have to enter the Thai restaurant, turning left and go upstairs to get to the steakhouse. Its nicely decorated and the tables are well-spaced. There's also a nice bar area with a glass floor which is really interesting! There's a large outdoor area overlooking the bay which would be great in the summer. We ordered the deep fried brie to start (and share) and it was really well done. We obviously both ordered steaks for our mains - we got one sirloin and one fillet - both cooked rare. They were great steaks and cooked to perfection. It was also just the right size for one person and it was very filling. We also ordered some side dishes - we both particularly liked the Parmesan, black truffle oil fries which were absolutely delicious! I'd go back just for them! We had the cheese board for desert and it didn't disappoint though as always, i would have liked more cheese. We paired this with a nice glass of port from their selection of 3/4. The wine is reasonably priced and the service was brilliant. The staff were attentive and knowledgable and very courteous; they even ordered us a taxi for when we were ready to leave. I really liked this restuarnat and I can't wait to visit it again.

On our recent trip to London, four of us went to the Steak Restaurant, on the recommendation of…read moresomeone recently relocated from California. I mention this because we have some amazing steak restaurants in SoCal. The restaurant had several families dining, and had a nice level of background chatter. Our chef took the time to come speak with us, recommend cuts of beef and generally go over our options. This was a lovely surprise as this rarely happens. We started with "fall off the bone" ribs and the Hallumi - (squeaky cheese - wish I could find this here in SoCal... if anyone reading this knows a place... please let me know!) We ordered rib eye steaks, I had the filet... with sides of creamed spinach/truffle fries and Mac and cheese. Everything was cooked to our liking, and the chef came back out to check on us. We actually ended up going back again just because the food and service were great. Look forward to visiting again! (Oooh... if you go, ask for their salts.. I liked the Merlot infused one)

Friends had told me that if I ate a steak at this restaurant it would be the best steak I could…read moreever have, unfortunately this is far from the truth. The steak is purchased locally from a very good butcher in the town. Reservations were made for 18.30 hrs as a couple we attended at the set time because we were told no other time slots were available. Joy of joy that this news would mean the restaurant would be packed out because of the good food. I found the starters a little mundane, and to be honest what I would expect from good British steak house starters like prawn cocktail were not on the starter menu (personal gripe). Service was slow and we found ourselves waiting to order drinks. A waitress approached to take our order, so we thought, but no she lent across the table (no excuse me) and removed a candle for lighting and then placed it back in its holder and walked off ??? We did eventually get to order and we both opted for the Rum steak @ £26 or is it £24 a steak we were expecting a very nice meal. What turned up was... yes a steak some very dry chip (not fluffy in the middle) and some garnish which was supposed to be a salad. Lettuce leave for me don't constitute a salad. No tomato, no avocado, no cucumber and a dressing on the lettuce which was not asked for. We opted for the Dian sauce but we got a garlic sauce with mushrooms. Was this supposed to be the Dian sauce? We asked for a mixed mushroom with green bean and garlic as a side dish. What we got were garlic mushrooms. I was rather disappointed with the cut of meat. Quite a lot of fat for a 16oz steak. I was cooked very nicely though I have to admit. After the meal we opted for puddings and they were ordered again after looking out for the waitress in the not so busy venue. Oh one thing before I forget. The restaurant had a male singer in on the time of eating. LOUD is not the word. No conversation could be had over our meal because of this and the venue is small enough without a signer amp and associated equipment in front of the door. After our desert we asked for the bill. The waitress brought over the pin machine and then hovered looking at me while I had the option to give a tip or not. To be honest I did feel pressured into giving the tip for the non existent service. For a restaurant that is famed in the area for its steaks, I would not return or recommend it to others. Yes the steak was lovely but I do feel that I could purchase the steak myself and do a far better job in the cooking and on the Dian souse. A truthful account, but like its predecessor of the venue everything was covered in some sort of garlic to help mask the basic lack of taste.
