They just renovated their little clubhouse and the restroom already looks 20 years old. It's filthy and the toilet seat is broken. It's obvious that nobody is maintaining it, just like the older, completely ruined bathrooms downstairs. Who is running this place? Also, the older, gray haired guy who seems to "own" the place is a total jerk. As beginner/intermediates he was hitting up on us on the last few holes because he was in a rush with one of his coaching clients and said he wanted to get to lunch. He has no business being in his position as a coach/marshal or whatever he is, especially not on a municipal course. read more

Wonderful, scenic & challenging 9 hole golf course situated in Marin county. I recommend walking the course for an excellent work out. No need for a gym membership if you play golf here. The greens are of a high-quality, many of them elevated. Multiple tee choices render a the course suitable for all levels. Only negative is a lack of signage between holes. Great value. read more

A fun course to play - fairly challenging thanks to the hilly terrain. Good workout if you walk (most people do). You can carry your clubs or rent a pull cart cheaply). The course is not in the best condition. Lots of bare spots, lots of divots (people, repair your divots!), so some course maintenance would move it up from 3 to 4 stars from me. I just started playing golf and I was going over to the Eastbay to play and I got online and had find something closer and low and behold BAM 10 minutes away snap I love this course it's somewhat hilly (3) and lots of redwood trees. I think medium range so if your over in Marin stop by and get a quick 9. Another thing I like about is you can book a tee time and you can tee off early if you like won me over right there . read more

We found a hot deal and decided to take advantage of it on a Sunday morning before attending a wedding later that day. Tee off at 11:30am but was able to get out at 11:00am. Only walking since it's a 9 hole and due to recent rain, it was better to walk anyway. A pleasant day where the rain made the course play slower, but it did not rain during the round. A few areas were muddier than we'd like but overall, the course held up well. #4 was the worst of all the holes (Par 5 where you want to play the ball to the left since the slope brings the ball down the hill and below the hole). Double bogey on the hole since I felt like I was playing in mud the entire hole but recovered on #5 with a solid par. Walking the course took you through pine trees like you were walking in a forest and there is one hole where you tee off between the green for #2 on your left and the green for #8 on your right, and I mean right below the tee box. I would wait till the course wasn't so wet to try it again but for the hot deal price of $25 for two, we couldn't resist. read more

Look, the Mill Valley Golf Course is what it is. A track stick in a time that was much more simple. Built in 1912, it's remained pretty much the same and that gives it charm. You're able to play the 9 holes in under two hours and experience a nice little walk through the woods for $20 bucks. Pretty good deal for a city track. What can you expect? The greens were in better shape than I thought they would be, fairways kind of a mess but you get what you pay for, right? The best part...the old retired guys working behind the counters and laid back attitude. Reminds me of what golfing would have been like in the 1940s or 50s. Catch it on a warm sunny day and you'll enjoy your time out in nature. Forget about your score and have a nice walk. read more

Hidden Gem This place is a great find for those who have the hook up...I don't know exactly how some friends of mine snagged this place for a collassal end of summer party but it was awesome! Guessing that it is owned by whoever owns the golf course out there, it is a cozy little spot secludded on a hill which makes for the "let's make it happen" factor at night. A 101 year old 9 hole municipal course with very moderate rates. The greens are very well maintained and hold shots well. 4th hole may be the most difficult par 4 you'll ever encounter and the walk off the green is the most beautiful view of Mt. Tam in the entire county. Heed warning when playing in a rainy winter season (it is mentioned in many reviews) and will be sloppy out there as the drainage needs work. When dry it is a magical spot for a $20 nine hole loop through the redwoods. read more

What a cool little golf course. This is a golf review not a wedding venue review or a restaurant review. This course just celebrated its 100th year and you can see how the course had evolved over the last century. From a cool little clubhouse to a unique routing this course is a lot of fun. No it's not Pebble Beach or Pinehurst #2. And there are definitely some areas that need a little groundskeeping. This is tough......as I think you must consider the horrible weather we had this winter and the effect it had. But as it stands today in early April, the conditions, specifically in the middle of the fairways and just off the greens, are the worst I've ever seen. The starter said "you'll lose some balls" and said he'd warned others as well. But I didn't think he meant in the middle of the fairways! He was right, I lost at least 3 in the fairways and several other times I had to hunt for several minutes to find them (see pictures for proof). That being said, I was so impressed with the natural beauty of the area! The redwoods, view of Mt Tam, and even a deer feeding near the 8th tee. If this course was well maintained, at least the fairways, I would feel very differently. There were a few holes that made no sense: the direction of #4 is confusing and the yardage is way off, and the tee box on #6 is ridiculous as it's so short you need an 8 or 9 iron, but the overhanging tree is so low you have to punch it to keep it low. I've included several pictures so you can judge for yourself. In the end I would rather take a jog through this course for exercise than play golf on it, but it's only $21 so I guess you get what you pay for. read more

Its nice to leave the old "cheese breeze" hovering over San Francisco these days and head out across the bridge. Its like emerging into a whole new world, where the sun is shining, birds are chirping, and little girls go biking past in short jean shorts. Its actually summer. Almost forgot what that feels like. I digress. This is supposed to be about the Mill Valley Municipal Golf Course which, when I have 18 bucks and a couple hours to kill, is a great place to hit a few balls. Stunning views of Mt. Tamalpais from the 3rd and 4th holes and a well maintained course make for pleasurable golf. It actually smells like summer too, the fresh cut grass and leaves. Its a great alternative to Golden Gate and you can wear shorts unlike Gleneagles or the Presidio. I also found 10 balls in the bushes off the tee at the 7th, which pretty much paid for my round. Gleneagles made Lee Trevinos list of most challenging golf courses. Well, I think MV is tougher. Not easy at all. Hydration is important as you climb hike and drop in on the greens. Challenging but lots of fun putting your skills to the test. Carry your bag but lighten up the load, take only what you need, "do not take a pull or push cart. Pushing or pulling through the hills will drain you. Beautiful course, lots of deer, take a deep breath when walking through the forest, enjoy. Oh, they have cold beer read more

"What the hell are you doing to me?!" That was my body after playing 9 holes here yesterday. This course is definitely hilly. I've never felt so out of shape! But like others have said, the views are absolutely gorgeous. Also, you'll find lots of lost balls in you happen to lose your own in the rough. Was a little tough for a beginner like me. I lost 4 golf balls here once... and they only have 9-holes! Ok so they do have different tee options to simulate 18-holes when you replay the course. Their "Front 9" consists of 6 par-4 and 3 par-3, by no means did their 62.6/104 rating/slope feel that easy. Lots of hills so be prepared to go up and down (no pun intended). 6th hole creek comes deceivingly into play & 7th hole looks easy on paper, but watch out for the mature trees, greenside bunkers on front, and sloping hills toward the back. Great views especially in sunny weather... The course is kept in decent condition as it's tucked away in a quiet neighborhood. Didn't see a range; there's not much room anyways with all the surrounding trees. Fees were $19 on weekends for non-residents. I would like to come back for a decent challenge on a 9-hole... too bad you gotta think about GGB toll if in SF. read more

This is a message to all the locals who you will inevitably get stuck playing a round with. ----------- Nobody cares what you scored on this hole last week. I couldn't give a rat's ass about how your birdie putt lipped out the other day. Why ion the world would I want to know why you hit your 7 iron to lay up on number 8 blah blah blah zzzzzzz......*how long was I out?* You know what I want to hear? I want to hear a story about how your 5 iron slipped out of your hands on number 7, killing a couple squirrels before finally coming to rest into some obviously over-ripe poison oak. But you went digging for it anyway because it was a gift from your father-in-law who will kill you if you lose it because he made a special trip to St .Augustine Florida that one summer, got drunk and had the epiphany that he might as well make an attempt to be nice to his daughters husband or Snookum's mom isn't gonna sleep with dear old dad in the near future. So you had to miss work because you had festering blisters all over your unmentionables for a week and a half, which ironically, led to YOUR wife not wanting to have sex with you for the foreseeable future. I LOVE this course. It's beautiful, it's challenging, and it's run by the nicest folks. The regulars are awesomely good golfers. Great great track and only getting better under the care and guidance of head pro Doug Acton who is a gifted teacher. Yes, it's only 9 holes. Whatever. You'll pull just about every club. You got trees, creeks, sand, O.B., steep hills, uneven lies, narrow chutes, blind doglegs, tiny greens, nasty frog hair, morning fog, tricky winds. And it's a blast! My son grew up playing on this course (great junior program) and it prepared him to go low at just about any 18-hole out there. It's that demanding -- and so much fun. Their old website seems to have disappeared... So I called the pro shop and he had no idea if they had a website anymore or not... Current rates are: $21 for 9 holes (weekday) / $23 for weekend. $17 for twilight (after 4, weekday) / $18 (after 4, weekend) It's another $12 if you want to play a second round once you are done with the first nine. You need a reservation for more than 1 person. They have gas carts for $15. EDIT: Couldn't figure out what the charge on my credit card was, but looks like this shows up as "City of Mill Valley" Not a big fan of the AstroTurf style tee boxes that some of the holes have... read more

I'm actually surprised at the good reviews for this course. I'm not sure how any golf course gets away with having tee mats on no fewer than 4 holes. The mats only let you sink your tee to a certain level - so if you like to drive off of a short tee, you can't. In fact, on one hole, there is no ability to use a tee - they have those driving range rubber tees. I know that maintaining the grass on tee boxes is not an easy task, but I've played some pretty cheap courses in my time and never have I had to drive off of fake grass (and it's not just for the divot-heavy par 3's, it's on the par 4 tee boxes as well). The views are spectacular but the course layout is confusing. The greens are in excellent shape, a bit small, but offer good, challenging putts. It's a good course if you just want to get out and hit some irons in the sun. But beware if you're looking for a great golf experience. read more

For a 9-hole course where you pull out your driver only 30% of the time, it actually has some variety. No water hazards, few sandtraps, but experts can still work on accuracy while beginners are able to not lose ALL of their balls. Is it the best-groomed? er... does the office inexplicably close and lock the door for no reason in the middle of the day? um... oh, ok. the main draw is that it's cheep. This is a hidden gem, in plane sight. Mill Valley 9 has a very laid back feel, while having level of quality golf. This little course saved my game when by kids were little. With six par 4s and three par 3s, its a perfect place to run around 9 holes in under two hours. If you have the time you can make it a full 18. Most holes have two tee boxes, so you can get a different look on the second loop. The view from the 4th green is one of the most iconic in California golf. It is a bargain to boot. 5 STARS. read more

This is a great 9-hole, walking course! Be prepared for sore legs the next morning, but you will love the views. The green fees are reasonable and the course is challenging for my handicap. In my Yelp opinion this is the best 9-hole public course in the Bay Area for the $$ and I've played most of them - challenging for both beginners and the advanced players. Granted, yes the turf mats aren't great but the course is beautiful and pretty well maintained. The Greens keeper came from the Meadow Club years ago, so he knows what he's doing. During summer and fall months the course is in great shape. Winter and spring it can be pretty soggy. The best times to play are on weekdays or early weekend mornings before the Duffers and drunks make it onto the course. The course has a new Pro so you don't need to deal with Mr. Cranky-Pants anymore, he retired. This leads me to this message to other non-local players. Take care of our local muni-course when you come to play, please. That means fix your marks and don't leave your cigarette butts littering the fairways. MVGC is a casual place to play a nice round, but respect the course and the game. read more

Doug Acton is one of the two best teachers in the Bay area, along with Susan Young. He is affable, and knowledgeable. He uses video very well to show your swing faults first and then show your improvement. The cage is a drawback. The golf course itself is short but tight and challenging, particularly the 4th hole, which should be a par 6. lol The 9 hole course offers great views of Mt.Tam, especially on early spring mornings. read more
