I love New Lanark, it's World Heritage mill buildings, it's history, and through a small gate the wildlife reserve - the Falls of Clyde. Improbably, the same river that downstream was to become the world's greatest workshop of the industrial age is a natural jewel, with gorgeous waterfalls immortalised by Wordsworth and committed to canvas by Turner, and with a deep gorge that cuts through ancient woodland, cliffs with nesting peregrines, and William Wallace's cave (reputedly). Beautiful!...but as a tip bear in mind that the waterfalls are far better seen when the weir is down on so-called "Waterfall Days" and/or when the river is in spate.
Anyway it's in one of these mills, in the New Lanark Mill Hotel that the Mill One restaurant is situated. My dad booked lunch, but he needn't have bothered. It wasn't busy, in fact at first it was utterly devoid of anyone else. It is a stylish, contemporary room on the first floor and if only they'd built these buildings for leisure we would have hada great view of the river. The young waiter was glad of our company I think and we were treated well. We all ordered the Salmon Caesar Salad and the Sunday Roast.
The salad came served in a glass, which is not very practical for eating it so we tipped it all out onto our plates. The salmon was very mild and refreshing, but the Caesar salad wasn't one, it had no croutons in it and as such was more of a coleslaw and lettuce. It lacked textures. It wasn't bad though. Patrons started to appear! The roast was really good, the meat was cooked to match most tastes, a bit over for me but it's one roast for all after all. The classic roast vegetables were perfectly cooked with just a slight bite and there were plenty of them. A perfect Yorkshire pud too, if only there were two and a bit more gravy! read more
