I saw 4 IBCLCS, 5 pediatricians, several lactation consultants, and countless nurses "trained in breastfeeding" before Cass, but she was the only one who was able to actually identify the problem to help me - and she did it for FREE! Cass has helped me with breastfeeding for both of my kids. With my first, he did not latch well at all. He was losing weight, jaundiced and I was so depressed. I was refered to Cass by a friend from work prior to the birth of my son. I dont know why I assumed breastfeeding would be a cake walk and that it would just be easy and come easily. BOY WAS I WRONG!! 2 weeks after my son's birth I was re-thinking how it wasn't as easy as people made it seem and it was definately not the "cake walk" I had originally thought it to be. With some poor information given at the hospital where my son was delivered I went home being supplemented with formula. Something I had not wanted but the told me I wasnt producing enough and that I would need to do this until my milk came in. Being a FTM I foolishly fell into the formula trap. I struggled with feeding him both breast and formula for about 4 days after leaving the hospital before my milk "came in." I threw out the formula and started giving him strictly breast. I thought "Great! Now I can get my son on track." Well that didnt happen he was crying for hours on end with horrible gas and mucousy stools. I took him the Dr. Where they told me he had "colic" and prescribed me gas drops. So I started giving them to him. However, 2 weeks in my son had no relief and was screaming in pain for hours. I felt like a horrible Mother. My stupid self should had called Cass to begin with... I emailed Cass and told her my situation and what had been going on . She kindly replied and asked me to send her pics of my sons mouth so I did. She quickly got back to me and told me my son had some pretty bad lip and tongue ties. She refered me to Dr. Jesse and I was there that Friday getting them revised. I met with Cass shortly after that via skype she answered all my queations and gave me tips and advice on how to breastfeed and what I needed to do and how to do it. I wrote earlier that Cass is the sole reason I've been able to breastfeed my son. I can now say that she's the sole reason I'm able to KEEP breastfeeding my son. Cass is a fantastic lactation consultant. I learned about her through my Bradley Method teacher. After my son was born we had Cass do a house call for us because he was having trouble latching and was losing weight pretty quickly. She confirmed that he had a tongue/lip tie and she referred us to a fantastic dentist out in Redlands. We had his ties corrected the next day and he was almost immediately latching better. Wonderful lady. Very knowledgeable and experienced. I struggled with my first son with latching/tongue and lip ties. I didn't not live near or knew of Cass back then but found my way to getting his ties fixed but my supply had dropped due to not getting diagnosed the first time. With my second son I was more aware of the ties and knew right away his latch was in correct and that he had ties. The doctors, nurses and lactation consultant in the hospital brushed off my suspicions of a tie since it was posterior and less visible to them. Within the first week he had lost so much weight and could not latch correctly so I got his tie released and then he refused to latch but only bottle feed. I was pumping and bottle feeding exclusively. I refused to continue my breastfeeding path this way. I called Cass and she came for a house visit right away and helped me get my son back to breast with a nipple shield. Now I'm transitioning into weening him off the shield but just so happy I was in tears to get him back to nursing. We had a whirlwind birth involving almost not making it to the birth center followed by my wife hemorrhaging which kind of threw off that "magical" first breastfeeding experience it seems like you have to have in order to nail nursing right from the start. One week later, my daughter had a bad case of Jaundice and we were in basically in panic mode 24 hours a day. We went and saw the pediatrician and he suggested we see a lactation consultant. We called Cass because everyone we had met who knew her raved about her, and I can see why. She came over that day and spent about 2 hours working with my wife on nursing. I was very impressed with her breadth of knowledge on the topic but she went above and beyond the call of duty, hanging out an extra hour or so to help me take and track my daughter's temperature to make sure the Jaundice wasn't getting worse. Cass saw right away that Tabitha had a lip tie, something the midwife and pediatrician had both missed, and recommended an amazing dentist to us to get it revised, explaining that this was keeping her from latching correctly and would make a huge difference.
