So after hitting the Yale Center for British Art, we speed walked (sped walked?) over to the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Why? Google it and you'll understand when you see the pictures. Beinicke is Yale's rare book and manuscript library - not their main university library or their law library. The reading room is open to registered researchers only, but the public are welcome to visit the library's exhibition hall. And everyone visiting New Haven should! The library was built in 1963, and the the architecture is incredible. The building is a granite veneer shell, fastened to a structural steel frame. Inside that structure is a glass-enclosed tower of book cases. The granite was milled to 1.25 inches thick to allow filtered daylight in - in the afternoon/early evening, the marble turned an amber color. We walked back past it at night for a different view of the building. It is really incredible architecture, and the library hosts exhibits you can see in the exhibition hall when you visit to enjoy the building (when we visited, the exhibit was "Taught By the Pen: The World of Islamic Manuscripts"). The children's section upstairs is always full of phenomenal books that children are eager to read. The adult section is well organized, quiet, clean, and relaxing. The staff is friendly, and very helpful. There is plenty of parking and the hours it is open and makes it a convenient place to find the newest books.

We were able to use their larger event room and the library was lovely enough to supply coffee and tea for our attendees as well as a couple of helpful handouts. In addition, it is a beautiful, spacious and well-lit library and I plan on coming back to use the reading/chill area on the second floor. There is plenty of parking and the Wifi is free, you can't complain with that.

It's almost dead silent and it feels like one ought to do important work ... in such an important-feeling space (which is a wonderful motivator). Wish that more of the library was open to the public but I understand that in the New Haven area and with as many visitors as Yale probably gets, that's simply not possible. Not seeing an address or place to write them up on Yelp, I add this review of their show. The band tonight consisted of Julio, a Singer/Guitar player, a bassist, keyboardist, 2 drummers & a Conga player playing tall 3 ft x 1ft floor standing drums. Together as musicians they brought the sounds and feels of "Santana" to the audience as well as each taking time to just jam. Upon thier introduction, Julio said to the audience, "Remeber, you guys make the Joy". They certainly did, as many were moving, clapping, tapping, dancing and enjoying the beat. Why inside on a Tuesday at 6? Blame the weather as they had been repeatedly rained out. A chat with Julio, told me a bit about the band and how he got involved. The Band started in 2005. He was a singer. Guitarist came and went. Finally, they said to him "why don't You just play" as well. So, he did. Being Porta Rican and fluent in Spanish he's able to cover all the Spanish songs as well. He started playing guitar at age 11 here in the states as he was introduced to the sounds of Rock & Roll, Beatles and all the upcoming types of music and changes there after. I understand the band also performs as Openers as well as having their own following. So, if you like Santana, check them out at www.milagrolive.com

The library is pretty good sized, and the librarians very friendly. Their displays are seasonal and fun - their Halloween must be amazing. People patiently waited in line to check out, which to me shows loyal patrons who know they will be helped. Also, they have a pay phone! It might be a historical monument by now.

I can't comment on the selection of books as I come here mainly to study, but man these folks talk…read moreloudly and excessively, and this includes the workers. Please don't come here if you're looking for somewhere quiet to get your work done.
