In…read moreseeking out a copy of a specific reference book, I was assisted by Shari Merrill, Head of Adult Services. She went above and beyond the call of duty in helping me to find exactly what I needed and and did it in a cheerful and friendly way. She tracked down the book I wanted, and then scanned maps within it. She next found an additional resource I was unaware of, and made photocopies of its content. Lots of interesting nooks and crannies to explore, local historic artifacts, paintings, etc. Also, nice selection of DVD's to borrow, and fun activities for babies and toddlers during the week. If you are local, this is a great place to stop during a walk up Main St. or to bring some books or laptop for study.

Our daughter's first teachers were here during Busy Bee's play/learn group and learned so much. We are so grateful for that experience. Many interesting and fun programs over the years from craft projects to fantastic performances. The staff are amazing humans who put 100% into everything they do, not just for the kids, but the whole family. Very knowledgeable and supportive. Great books of every kind, including tough subjects and how to talk to kids about anything: bullying or bodies or big life changes. The adults area is great and I have enjoyed taking my laptop and doing quiet work by the enormous windows at the provided desks- that have outlets! So after hitting the Yale Center for British Art, we speed walked (sped walked?) over to the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Why? Google it and you'll understand when you see the pictures. Beinicke is Yale's rare book and manuscript library - not their main university library or their law library. The reading room is open to registered researchers only, but the public are welcome to visit the library's exhibition hall. And everyone visiting New Haven should! The library was built in 1963, and the the architecture is incredible. The building is a granite veneer shell, fastened to a structural steel frame. Inside that structure is a glass-enclosed tower of book cases. The granite was milled to 1.25 inches thick to allow filtered daylight in - in the afternoon/early evening, the marble turned an amber color. We walked back past it at night for a different view of the building. It is really incredible architecture, and the library hosts exhibits you can see in the exhibition hall when you visit to enjoy the building (when we visited, the exhibit was "Taught By the Pen: The World of Islamic Manuscripts"). The building is incredible and definitely worth a visit if you're exploring the Yale campus!

The general public has limited access, and this will be a short stop for most people, depending upon the exhibit. There is some parking in the front, and a beautiful garden to the left by the exit. Inside there is space for a children's, teen's, and adult's section, as well as a small cafe. The decor is very creative and unique (Bigfoot for the summer? Awesome!) and the wall mounted card catalog looks like an easy lifesaver to find what you're looking for.

I love this library - it's located in a quiet, grassy area surrounded by a school, historical…read morebuildings, a church, and I believe a fire department. There's a lot of open space and on a Saturday, an excellent place to let a dog stretch his paws and sniff. The library itself is beautifully designed - you walk into a little book nook and stare into a stained glass window. The interior has dark wood accents with a decorated children's space enclosed from the adult's, and a small reading area with a huge ceiling adorned by a quilt. The vibe of the building was very studious, and definitely encouraged reading.
