After working with general contractor Mason Carroll continuously for the last 6 months I have…read moreconcluded that he represents excellence and integrity in every aspect of job performance. I recommend him with enthusiasm and confidence. In spite of wintry weather, he has now concluded four home improvement projects which have included diverse taskings: construction of a 100 foot concrete retaining wall to include stabilization of a fence threatened by slope erosion, removal of concrete dog run and cracked concrete sidewalk, replacement and sealing of that concrete sidewalk, cleaning, repair and sealing/finishing a decorative stone porch, detection of origin of rainwater entry into the home with correction of the leakage fault, establishment of a roof/gutter water runoff drain field, surface grading and gravelling of a parking area, repair of a fractured roof truss, external door replacement, garage storage shelf installation, installation/wiring of internal and external lighting fixtures, installation of stairstep grab bars. These jobs were performed not just satisfactorily, but well beyond my expectations. I will engage him for other repairs as funds allow. I find Mr. Carroll to be a prompt and able communicator by text and phone, a good judge of whether a contemplated project could go forward, a good planner who generates conceptual drawings for load considerations, a highly detailed job estimator and calculator of volume, slope and grade, a standard good-practice contract writer, a facile and skilled workman over a broad scope of demand, a possessor/operator of required machinery and laser levelers, an engineer-artisan with a good eye for a finished appearance, a person responsible to correct inadvertent collateral damage, and a workman who is highly ordered and remarkably fastidious in cleanup. His invoices are detailed and consistent with the initial contract. I think that his pay/compensation rates for labor performed and materials utilized are fair. He is licensed and bonded. I know by now that Mr. Carroll is an honest, fair, responsible, kind, well-trained and thoughtful man with high moral standards. He represents American ideals at their finest and walks the talk. His additional helpers are also people warranting trust. He has worked very hard in my behalf, and I believe that he does the same for everybody else.

Update: After a…read morenightmare experience with our walkway: - majority of bricks were upside down -people were tripping over the bricks that Chris said would "settle" -the wrong materials used -busted sprinkler line due to a stake driven through We finally found a contractor to fix Chris' mistakes! Chris may be good at concrete (I wouldn't know) but DO NOT let him convince you that he knows what he's doing with masonry. This has been confirmed by multiple professionals who have looked at the job that it was a complete flop. Take a look at the updated photos and the bricks speak for themselves. (Same bricks, but by a real mason)

Working with Chris was fine but the price doubled between my original estimate and the final…read moreestimate ($4985 up to $9763) and the work in one area did not actually fix the problem I hired him for. The original plan was to remove/prevent weeds from my leach field and area near house & put rock under an electric fence. When asked about the weeds, Christopher said: "If you do it correctly you'll be able to be plant free in areas that you tamped for a few years. Longest I've been able to keep plants away without adding a cloth weed sheet was 5 years." As of 5/22/24 when I finally just canceled the project because I couldn't handle any more unexpected price increases, the leach field is completely filled with weeds again, so the work just made a different kind of weed grow, but in the same amount. The rock under the fence is more than halfway complete. Here are the details about the price increases if you are interested. Estimate started at $4985, then Chris added $2915 more because he needed more materials than originally estimated. The work was still only partially completed when we made a new plan that would cost me around $900 more to finish the job ($300 labor + around $600 in materials). On the day that work was supposed to start, Chris told me that I needed to pay the materials people directly when the shipment arrived. I called them to pay and they told me the remaining materials would be $1367 for bark and $196 for rock, including delivery fee. That would mean I'd pay another $767 for materials than I was quoted. The frustrating part about each of these increases is that the work is halfway finished, so I have no choice but to switch contractors or deal with Chris again, whose prices go up without advance notice (the materials vendor is the one who told me this new info).
