Having recently won something to the effect of "best dairy product in Australia", this place seems to be doing pretty well right now. I have not tried every dairy product in Australia (nor do I really eat much dairy at all outside of the numerous gelato places I've tried), but their winning dark chocolate flavor was good enough to make that award sound plausible. Rarely will you taste something that is so uniformly strong in the slightly bitter but nonetheless delicious chocolate taste, with just enough sweetness to balance it out. None of which is to say their numerous other non-award-winning flavors are bad. They had an impressive mint as well, and the ferrero rocher (apparently named for some European candy bar) wasn't bad, though I would continue to experiment. Like most good gelato places, they do have some sorbets if you are not eating dairy. For a gelato place, it was quite substantial, with as much seating as many restaurants. It's telling that while the place opens at 3 on most weekdays, I dropped in at 3:01 and there were several groups ahead of me already eating. The staff and ownership is Chinese, but I don't question their acumen. The menu includes not just gelato but several impressive dessert creations, and eating in gives you the option of getting it in a cone or a chilled bowl. They take cards but do have a $10 minimum (and non-round prices if you are paying cash). I might return and try more flavors, but I'm quite certain I would get that dark chocolate no matter what. read more

Cafe E Gelato Milany has been around for as long as I can remember, and is definitely one of the best gelato shops in Brisbane. If you have time, be sure to dine in, as the experience is well worth it. The gelato and other desserts come out in fancy bowls and glasses and it makes the whole experience delicious and decadent. The Dark Chocolate flavour is exceptional, it's like liquid mud cake. They also have flavours like Turkish Delight and Cherry Ripe, which you don't always see. They are open until fairly late most nights, so you can always manage to pop in after dinner! read more

It was hot. We were a few minutes from the car and we needed something to cool us down. Up ahead was Café e Gelato Milany, so we stopped in to get an ice cream. We observed their multiple awards for their cold luxuries and proceeded to order a couple of single scoops for take away. Now, I'm a fan of ice-cream and even its non-cream based cousin. We paid what I feel was a pretty steep price and got something that was delicious in return. It just felt like it could have lasted longer than the couple of minutes it took to finish. Maybe it was because the scoops were smallish or I really wanted to sit down and smash one of their Sundays but it just wasn't enough for a takeaway. Next time we'll take a seat there. read more

Love the Gelato here! So many different flavours to choose from, it is hard to pick just one ... or, two or three! Service is very quick considering the line up and it can get quite busy. The only reason that they do not get 5 stars is because the tables are quite dirty and it takes a while for someone to come around and clean them and take away dirty plates. Considering there was 10 staff behind t he counter on a Saturday night, they could have had one person on clean up duty. read more

Aw heck. Why not go a 5? After a particularly healthy dinner on a summer's eve, I was craving ice cream. My closest is Cold Rock, and to be honest, I'm not a huge fan. I jumped on Yelp and did a search. Aha! This place down on Racecourse road. I should have known, I have been here before. Well, I zoomed on down, and it didn't take me long to decide on a double scoop of chocolate, with fresh strawberries on top. Damn. Maybe I just haven't had ice cream in a long time, but it was good. What? How-? Splutter! This was my reaction when I discovered there was a gelati cafe called Milany the next block over from where I worked along Racecourse road. I must have walked by it every day on my lunch break. I stood next door to it while lining up for Subway and never realised it was there. It turns out my oblivion was not entirely my fault. This gelati store doesn't exactly have wonderful signage and it only opens from 3pm on weekdays which would explain why I missed it. When my friend finally introduced me to Milany one night after a movie, I was blown away by its resemblance to an old fashion ice-cream parlour. On their menu, they've got the classics such as the banana split sundae and fun stuff for kids like the Playful Pinnochio - an upside down cone with vanilla bean gelati, a swirly biscuit for a nose and hundreds and thousand sprinkles. These old classic sundaes are given a modern twist with gelati, fresh fruit, yoghurt, meringues and tiramisu biscuits. If you can't justify an indulgent sundae or you don't have someone to share it with, just go for a simple one scoop or two scoop cup. They have a huge range of gelati flavours although the last time I order a vanilla and mango double scoop, the assistant talked me out of vanilla by implying I was being unadventurous and dull. I love vanilla flavour, okay?! There's nothing wrong with it and if you are going to get a double scoop, vanilla complements fruity flavours extremely well. I was so flustered I ended up ordering the Panna Cotta which was nice enough but no vanilla. NB: For chocolate lovers, their dark chocolate flavour here is to die for and has won the gold medal at both the 2010 and 2011 Royal Queensland Food and Wine Show. read more

The yoghurt flavours are decent; however, the rest are FAR TOO SWEET. Painfully sweet. The range of flavours have never been particularly inventive. most shocking of all is the atrocious service! who screens the staff? Unconcerned and aloof would be putting it kindly! We live just across the road at Portside and have been too many times with atrocious service, in both busy and quiet times. They charge more to eat in as well, eat in pricing is a joke! is it just that Queenslanders aren't critical enough or haven't been exposed to primo goods and service. This is the only proper gelato joint in this part of town but is such a bad package overall i would be happy to never ho again. AVOID! read more

My Dad is a big fan of bananas. Banana anything, he loves it. When his friend read in the Courier Mail that Milany had won some big award for its banana gelato, she brought some to his house during a dinner party. We were all very impressed. Best banana gelato I've ever had, but to be fair I haven't had many so I thought that in the interests of... ahem... research, that I should go to this famous Milany for myself. A quick browse of their website before I went confirmed that yes, this place has awards coming out of its ears. Aside from the basic gelato in a cup or cone, they do lots of big sundaes full of fruit, cream, nuts, chocolate, biscuits and other things that only improve when put on top of ice-cream. After sitting on the nice deck out the front and tackling a 'Tiramisu Delight' sundae, I had confirmed my banana gelato-related suspicions that this place has excellent gelato. read more

This place has the best variety of ice cream and gelato on this side of the river. They have 3 huge cabinets full of the stuff. It makes you just want to jump in and have a swim through it . It's always fresh, and goes down well in a hot summers night, actually it goes down well all year. read more

The ice-cream pizza was probably the first example of the fusion between a traditionally savoury standards and a dessert dish that I have seen. Milany takes this one step further though with their bizarre and fascinating looking 'Milany Spaghetti Carbonara' -- a sweet version of the traditional pasta dish, serve with chocolate, cream and nuts. I wasn't feeling adventurous (or hungry) enough to tackle such a substantial meal, so instead I opted for a thick shake, which turned out to be more than I could handle. They use two scoops of their delicious and aesthetically fabulous gelati to make the shake, so I decided to get experimental with a blend of 'Pistachio' and 'Turkish Delight' (sometimes they put nuts in the rosewater-based dessert, so there's a precedent). It is hard to go past a good gelato. There is nothing better on a hot day, or indeed any sort of day. I went to Italy last year and despite the fact that it was 5 degrees at 11pm at night, I was determined to have gelato on my last night. Sorry, I digress, but it was really good! Almost up to the same standard is Cafe E Gelato at Hamilton. It is beautifully presented to temp you even more. The gelato is good, above-average good - 4 stars good; BUT, the service is atrocious. Staff always seem to be aloof and inattentive, happy to make you wait. Also, I do realise staff can be pressured during peak hours of operation - but to serve another customer while in the process in tasting in order to purchase is rude. I do realise Australian society is in general more relaxed with these sorts of things - but this is innate common sense and just erodes the premium experience. and, I am not talking about indecisive stragglers - I am VERY decisive. The air is at times as if staff is to good to serve??!!?? As if this is the Hermes St. Germain flagship store or some secret club and you are just lucky you get to stand there (by the way they are shockingly wonderful and attentive at ALL Hermes stores I've been to). Called in for Gelati on my day off and boy.... was it worth it!!! I had Turkish Delight and my partner had Banana Split - we both had some of each others and loved both flavours. The variety of flavours is huge and I defy anyone to not find a flavour they like....no, love ! I absolutely love this place, well the ice cream at least. I've been too many times but haven't been recently (in the past 2 years). Just popped in this afternoon as a treat for the boy I look after. They had a whole bunch of new flavours I hadn't seen before - all of which tasted lovely! The quality of ice cream there is top notch and it's definitely my favourite ice cream parlour. It wasn't busy at the time we went but on weekends and Friday afternoons/ evenings it's choc-a-block! They accept cash and card. The only complaint I have is throughout the entire existence of Milany while I've known then (about 4 years) I've never liked the staff. They're always stand offish and sometimes quite rude so if they could get some nice new staff that would be nice. We have moved to Perth now but come back regularly for holidays - when we say where do you want to go for a treat they all shout out this place! There is a first time for everything! Today we visited for gelati. We ordered two single cups of gelati, yes takeaway. We received our cups and walked outside. After a quick chat with the wife we decided to take a quick seat to enjoy our single cup of gelati. Yes, we changed our minds and decided to sit. How long would it take to eat a single cup in 32 degree outside temperature - four minutes? Two bites in we were asked to leave by the manager (yes bounced from gelati) Why? Well we ordered takeaway which means buy and leave, dont daly. The manager did offer to transfer our now melting single cup of gelati into a bowl so we could remain at the table . Maybe its me. Are we tarnishing the image of this establishment by changing our mind and sitting down and eating from the takeaway cup? As mentioned it was our first visit, we didn't see the rules printed which apparently we broke. I wasn't embarrassed, more perplexed. Takeaway and dine in prices are the same, the difference is the serving vessel. Isn't it better to have two returning paying customers than two perplexed leaving customers.
