A very exciting new addition to the Brisbane food & bar scene is Cowch in Southbank's Grey Street. Touted as Queensland's first dessert & cocktail bar, it has a great range of desserts, cocktails, cakes, pastries, frozen yogurt, churros, cheese, cold and hot drinks, cocktails, mocktails, beers, wines, as well as "healthy" breakfast options. Which all sound "udderly" delicious. Think quirky (with all the cow related decor; just look up at the ceiling), fun and sweet. The space inside is shiny and sexy with floating fireplace, and a long wooden communal table which gives it a slightly homestead feel. Cowch is to the dessert and bar scene, what Ariana Grande is to pop music. Refreshing, and gorgeous. Sure, I could have ordered most of what was on the menu, but I only have two stomachs. One for dessert, and one for drinks! Decided to go with the signature dish of Udder Puffs $12.50 (served with three chosen toppings; cookies and cream, tim tam, coconut, as well as chocolate ice-cream). If that wasn't enough, I ordered a "Naked Pop" (peppermint flavour), dipped in dark kchocolate, with almond, pistachio, and "chocolate pearl" (which actually were pink). To wash down this goodness, I decided a perfect cocktail was required. "Southbank Mule" a mix of vanilla vodka, fresh ginger, soda, lime and mint. With the upbeat music playing rhythmically to what was an ambient atmosphere, everything felt just right. Service was excellent, (although the staff didn't really know too much about how the concept of "Cowch" came about), and of course, everything we ordered was sweet as! If I had one piece of feedback, it would be that the cocktail, perhaps had a tad too much ginger, which overpowered the vodka and mint. The coffee afterwards was fairly average, not necessarily my flavour. All in all, an impressive venue, perfect for any night of the week.

The desserts are definitely worth it, very good. The drinks are more for the look than the flavor, they were so-so. But our dessert sampler was to die for! Staff was friendly and it had a fun upbeat vibe.

My first impression after dessert at Cowch on Saturday night with some friends was that it felt like I was queueing to be let into a nightclub (something I have not done in years)! I get that it was busy and there was a line up in order to be seated, but the dude in his suit with his earpiece, progressively letting people in and the roped off "private suites" just made me laugh. Anyway we were seated in one of the "private suites" out the front and proceeded to peruse the menu. I was a little underwhelmed by the menu tbh, after all the hype about the place. Maybe it was because I was already full after dinner and didn't really feel like indulging too much? Anyway, my hubby and I ordered a mocktail and the banana honey rum something or other with vanilla icecream to share. Despite being busy, it didn't feel like we waited an overly long time for our orders. Though we did have lots of people to chat to to pass time. Mocktail looked very photogenic, with mint leaves on the stalk sticking out the top of the glass. Taste was as expected - refreshing. Dessert came and looked pretty unimpressive compared to a lot of the items our friends ordered (many had waffle bowl things and the 3 different ice creams served on what look like little Yorkshire puddings). Upon tasting our dessert I was disappointed in the banana. Quite bland. But by the time we were scooping the honey and rum infused melted icecreamy slop from the bottom of the glass, I was happy, mmmm sugary goodness! The deluxe hot chocs other friends got looked super decadent. And very cute in the double walled udder-shaped glassware :P All in all it was a nice place to try but I'm not in a hurry to go back.

Udder Puffs with peanut butter ice cream

This place is the CUTEST! I walked by this place a few weeks ago and was immediately drawn to the interior of the restaurant! The udder lights are genius! I finally got the chance to try this desert place last night. Once my friend and I got to the restaurant, we were greeted by a friendly worker. We wanted to be seated inside. There weren't any available inside tables left so we were seated at a huge table with a bunch of other people. Eventually we moved to a table outside since we didn't want to sit on the huge table. Their menu design is aesthetically appealing and easy to read, but it was really hard to flip through the pages. It bugged me a little. Once we decided what we wanted, we went up to the cash register and ordered. I got the "Udder Puffs" (~ $14.50). I chose peanut butter ice cream with strawberry, mango and Tim Tams as toppings. My friend ordered the "Waffle Bowl" (~ $13.80) with chocolate ice cream and granola and mixed berries. The Udder Puffs were AMAZING! The ice cream sat on top of the pastry which was filled with the toppings. The right amount of chocolate was drizzled on the puffs. The peanut butter ice cream was DELISH! The ice cream was so soft and creamy. It had the perfect peanut butter taste. The Waffle Bowl wasn't anything special. The chocolate ice cream was really good though! Overall, I really enjoyed my time and desert here! The deserts are a bit pricy though. I wouldn't mind coming here again to try other deserts and maybe the alcoholic chocolate drinks!

Blood Orange Sorbet Bloody Mary - very spicy, tangy & refreshing

We were dining on the last day of Winter which really felt like the first day of Summer. Cowch's open plan restaurant was bright and breezy and suddenly, ice cream for breakfast seemed like a grand idea. As well as a large selection of desserts and treats Cowch now has a lazy weekend brunch offering. $25 gives you a choice of Churros w Berries, Ricotta and Honey or a Canadienne Waffle Bowl w a double scoop of Bacon Maple Ice Cream as well as a coffee of your choice and a glass of bubbles. Perhaps you want a hair of the dog and would like your bubbles first or maybe, you'd like to start with a coffee and finish the meal with a sparkling flourish. You decide what you want, when you want, by cashing in your drink tokens when it suits. The real star of the morning though was the Bacon Maple ice cream. Some at the table were a little nervous about the idea of bacon ice cream but we were able to talk them around. Did they like the sweet/salty combo of peanut butter? Salted caramel? Lindt fleur de sel? Yes? Then they would like Bacon Maple ice cream. When our waffle bowls arrived, we tucked in and were not disappointed. The ice cream was so luscious with little flecks of candied bacon swirled throughout for extra crunch. My goodness! Made for Cowch by local Brisbane ice-creamery, Lick!, they really know their stuff. The crisp little strip of prosciutto sitting atop the ice cream scoop was an amusing take on a wafer. If you really can't come at Bacon Maple ice cream though, there's always Churros. These were baked rather than fried so there wasn't a hint of oiliness. They were light and fresh with those delicious little chewy, crispy edges that everyone enjoys. A very spicy Bloody Mary made with blood orange sorbet was a tangy foil for the sweet desserts, cutting through the rich flavours and refreshing the palate. Though I didn't partake in one, I also wanted to mention the Naked Pops. I spent most of the morning looking admiringly at the art installation hanging behind one of the counters until it slowly dawned on me that the sculpture was in fact row upon row of pastel ice cream hanging in perfect symmetrical order. They were Naked Pops. After no doubt taking an inordinately long time trying to decide which Lick! flavour to choose, you then have to decide what coating to want to cover your Naked Pop in. Coconut? Chocolate rice puffs? The choices to customise your treat are endless. A very clever concept.

    Hard cornmeal tasting microwaved waffle.

I was very excited to try this place and unfortunately it was such a disappointment. I ordered a waffle with ice cream with strawberries and banana and chocolate what was suppose to be syrup I guess. Well the waffle was the size of my hand middle and the hardest thing I have ever tried. It was not made by regular waffle batter. It tasted like a dried out dense corn cake of some sort. You can tell it was just popped in the microwave which made it even harder. Presentation was rubbish. Overall did not worth a second bite.

Belgian waffle with Choc ice cream, strawberries, banana and caramel sauce

Nice little place to get your dessert on. We had the Fondmoo (melted milk chocolate, strawberries and marshmallows). It was delicious and definitely would feed two. Also had the Belgian waffles with Choc ice cream bananas strawberries and caramel sauce. This place does get extremely busy and it's hard to get a seat in such a small area but don't let that put you off. The naked pops also looked great and you design your own.

Dark chocolate fondue and white chocolate martini....chocolate overload
    Deborah D.

I love this place for dessert after dinner, it's lovely to sit on the lounge outside and watch the world go by while tasting one of the many desserts and cocktails on offer. The hardest choice is what to choose, you can't go wrong with a fondue of your choice of milk, white or dark chocolate that comes with banana, strawberries and marshmallows. This will feed two people. The white chocolate martini is delicious too.

I think we will get diabetes.

The theme and decoration are very trendy and the people coming to get some sweets are too. We ordered so much. The dated pudding was a bit different and I won't order it again. Waffles are a bit soggy. Ice cream is okay. Everything is okay. It's a nice place to sit and people watch.

Not impressed. Had to line up to be seated and then waited forever for our order to be taken which was 1 dessert and 1 glass of wine. Wine arrived after 10 mins of waiting, asked by waitress is there anything else we needed? Hell yes, 1 dessert we ordered! Should not have to wait that long for the wine anyhow! Takes 30 seconds to pour a wine. It is a cocktail bar too! Dessert took ages to arrive and was rich and full of pressure can cream. Disappointing. Waitress offered a free coffee because of the delay then promptly forgot to get it. Manager redeemed the situation with a voucher for a return visit.

Chocolate fondant and peanut butter icecream. So delectable I couldn't resist the urge to try some before pulling out my camera!

The decor is very appropriate for both the area and for the W brand, servers are young and a little overbearing (probably due to inexperience?), and the kitchen, while mostly good, is also occasionally prone to bouts of slowness. Prawns and oysters off the chilled menu are both quite traditional; solid items but one might have expected them to take a few more risks here. On the other hand, W is a huge brand so maybe they're risk-adverse? And the swordfish main course was recommend medium rare but again otherwise not particularly innovative. And to be fair, sticking with the seafood, per the recommendation of all the servers, may have been a mistake on my part. The porchetta and I think the lamb (?) both sounded amazing, but I ended up skipping those. At least the seafood, for a nice place, was very reasonably priced. 3* sounds right. Don't be off-put by the rating, there's potential...

The open aspect of the design made full use of the space and capitalises on the beautiful weather Queenslanders enjoy. Signage is scarce when finding the place and parking is also tough. I'd recommend turning in to the hotel driveway and parking in their car park. Of course this is ticketed so you will need to pay. Good news is you don't have to be a guest to use the car park so you can drive straight in and take a ticket. The restaurant is spacious and open plan. It is welcoming and certainly the decor is modern and interesting by design. One small complaint, being of mature age I appreciate a comfortable and padded chair when out for dinner and the chair I had was neither. After a couple of hours my backside was needing a break! Anyway, the menu is limited but diverse. All the dishes were interesting and appealing. I had the only steak on the menu which was a 500 gram t-bone. I was in a party of eight so two others ordered the t-bone... in total two medium and one rare. Others in the party ordered fish, bugs and chicken. We also ordered some starters which was a sweet potato hummus and a fava bean and anchovy dip. Bread was an organic sourdough with cultured butter. All were delicious. Mains arrived all at once which is a real necessity in my books however the waiter could not identify which of the three steaks was the rare one. He simply placed one down in front of the person who ordered it and said "that should be it". One diner received an incorrect meal which was promptly returned to the kitchen and replaced with the correct one. No real drama, these things can happen. All diners enjoyed their meals with no complaints whatsoever. The portions were generous and all were visually appealing. My steak was delicious., cooked perfectly, juicy and tender. The meals don't come with sides so we ordered a mix of different dishes including asparagus, roasted garlic and rosemary potatoes and carrots. All were delicious. In terms of drinks the beer and wine lists were extensive and well represented. Service was efficient and slightly ambiguous. Whilst everyone was pleasant I didn't see anyone smile or engaging in terms of recommendations when requested. In all, I would recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting a slightly upmarket but relaxing atmosphere with great views, excellent food and a very good list of wines and beers.
