The best bar in Almaden Valley!!! Oh wait, it's the ONLY bar in Almaden Valley? OK. Mike's Place is probably the biggest perk to moving to the area because now I have a unpretentious, friendly, clean dive bar within walking distance, without worry of getting a WUI. (Wobbling Under Influence). The friendly locals are colorful and odd, which is great because I like my regulars to be irregular. You are likely to make instant friends. The sweet owners, attentive bartenders, and funny bouncers are all awesome people. The pours differ by bartender (it's like the Three Bears, one is too strong, one is too weak, and one is just right). You can bring your own food. My first time there they made me leave with five plates of leftover catered food. (The catered food is not an everyday thing, of course, but if you see balloons from Camden Avenue, I advise you stop!) Be warned: the drink prices go up during nights with karaoke, DJs, and live performances (instead of charging a cover). Darts, pinball, shuffleboard, karaoke, and wacky people over 42? Apparently I've been here before, as my ex's review from 4 years ago is right below mine lol. And apparently we had an ok experience. But 4 years later, here I am, back at Mike's Place, for what must be my second visit. Forget about the exes review- I had a good time tonight. David was a great tender and theres a great crew of regulars that frequent the joint- everyone was having a good time- no drama and the young scene has not taken over (a must for me, as I can't deal with stupid drunk). They have heated tents set up out front so that we can continue to indulge in solid pours and good company while we ride out the rest of the COVID nightmare. read more

We stopped on our way home in order to try this place (had been passing in front of this place numerous time and had always told myself that it was a must try....yeah...I love dive bars :) Bartender, super friendly, maybe too much on the acting side but yes, friendly. Drinks? The well mix drink was really weak. We asked for a bit more vodka and we were proposed to order a "double"...why not. 1 beer and 1 double 17.5$ + tips almost 20$. This is exactly what a true neighborhood bar should be. I came last weekend for Mike's retirement from behind the bar celebration and had a blast. The ladies behind the bar worked their butts off because it was a full and festive crowd. They made the chaos look easy and the drinks were poured great. Loved the local crowd. Mixture of 20's - 70's and everyone was having a great time. This was a special occasion so the Garcia Brother's were performing and they were AWESOME. So fun. Unfortunatly I don't live in the immediate area but if I did, I'm pop in way more often. Wishing Mike all the best on his retirement and I think the folks he's passing the torch to will make him proud. The only downside was it got HOT in there. With a packed house and lots of dancing going on, it became a little too warm. But towards the later half of the evening, the back doors were opened and a fan was brought in which really helped. Lots of TV's to watch your favorite team. Mike has some cool sports memorabilia on the walls and there are weekly events that you can learn more about if you go to their page. So just to recap: Great neighborhood bar where the locals come to have beer, watch a game, dance a little and just have a good time. It doesn't look like much from the outside but once you go in you'll realize that the bartender who is normally there is one of the friendliest bartenders and people that you'll meet. He goes above and beyond to help out with whatever you ask of him. The combination of that and some extremely friendly customers make for one of the best vibes of any bar I've been to. Finally the bartender decided to take an intermission in his conversation. The host was Naseera, who did an excellent job of hosting and allowed the comics to exceed their allotted time (Because it was Valentine's Day, there were only 7 comics) so everybody was able to banter until/or beyond their personal time limit. Thanks to the diversity of the human race, not all comics went on for 10+. In my opinion, this makes the experience must more enriching. Both for comics and non-comics alike. Most comics leave after their set, but this comic If you love to laugh, or make people laugh because they are listening to you, the. I STRONGLY recommend visiting Mike's Place in San Jose, CA ------------------------------------------------ 2nd visit, February 16th, 2019 Because of the positive experience after my set on Thursday (See Upper Half of review) I returned like Simba to Pride Rock. Karaoke starts at 8:30, there is a personal sized screen with the lyrics in front of you. Small, but large enough that it serves its' purpose: Allowing the singer to catch up/drop back if they make mistake while keeping pace with the backing track. There is a second screen which is larger and is also the source of the sports/shows during mon-karaoke hours. This allows the crowd to sing along, which aids the performance/confidence of the singer. The man and woman running karaoke, are both polite and talented singers. Of course, I must mention the other duo contributing to the fun atmosphere, The Bar Manager/Bar Lead named David with James as the barback and Gus the door man. They had all 4+ songs that I requested. There is a food place nearby name Maui Bbq, which Mike's Place allows you to eat inside. They close at 9( Hours may vary, consult their website for more accurate hours) I had a half Cesar Salad with Tri-tip that filled me up and which I finished, no pesky but vital leftovers. It came with a piece of garlic bread, which contributed to the meal. The pool table is open until close, which was incredibly fun. You can sign up on the mini chalkboard, which is conveniently placed to prevent conflict between patrons in the line for pool. Everyone was respectful of the line order, which made the 2nd half of my night fun. It is 10:43, on February 16th, and I am nearing the end of this review. We stopped in for the first time on a weekend evening. The place was jammed full of completely drunk people, so we didn't make it far in. The only interaction we had with a "local" was a guy coming around asking for money for his Karaoke service. He touched my hip and low back without my consent as if it would sway me to donate. If I was a guy he would never do that to me. Being manhandled by a misogynistic stranger is not a good time, it's stressful and disturbing. I will never be back. read more

I've known Mike for a long time as many do in the area.He is a great guy.....friendly as heck,super engaging and a trivia nut! Just what you want in a bartender....owner kind of neighborhood bar! Finally went to our neighborhood bar (yes it's a dive bar lol). So many times I tried to drag my husband there but never made it inside. Went with some of girlfriends last night and had so much fun! Mix of young & old. Not much of a dance floor but we managed to squeeze in there and dance. Pleasantly surprised they had Kendall Jackson Chard, usually unheard of at a dive bar. I enjoy going to this bar. I've been there several times over the last few years. It is a nice refuge from the CA covid BS. However, I've had two bad experiences here, and it's all centered around the wanna-be Barbie they have bartending. The first experience was not worthy of posting a review, but I figure its worth noting now that there are two negative experiences with her. She was very rude and short with us when we were ordering, and was upset that we didn't want to open a tab, as we were just there for a drink before we headed to an event after. She claimed it was too much work to open and close a tab all the time. Well, no tip and we left after our one drink. The second time we had to deal with her was more recent. We were there for a few drinks and standing at one of the tables by the bar when a lady walked past me and her fresh drink got bumped out of her hand. No big deal. When that happens, the bartender is pretty good about comping a new drink. Shit happens. NOT Barbie. She got all huffy puffy and insisted I buy this lady's replacement drink. Uh, what?! After these experiences with matronly Barbie, I can assure you we will walk right back out the door if we see that she is the one bartending when we go in. read more

I moved to the neighborhood behind this bar about 8 months ago. Coming from an apartment near The Office in Willow Glen, I had been accustomed to a very high quality bar environment that served as my local watering hole. The ambiance at Mikes is that of a neighborhood bar, which is cool, low-key, and divey... but what really makes this bar great is Krissy, the bartender who's always here when I'm visiting. She's extraordinarily friendly and attentive no matter how busy she is with guests. Everyone seems to like her and she always makes me feel welcomed. Very clean without the sour bar smell that makes you want to scamper out as quickly as you scampered in. Lovely taco cart outside in the parking lot is a refreshing low cost change from the unpalatable Costco microwave fare available at competing establishments.
