This restaurant is 6 out of 5 stars…read more I ate here a few times back when I lived in NYC, and now that I can afford to, I make a point of going every time I visit NYC. I bring friends and family and lovers when they're in NYC with me. It doesn't get old. Some restaurants I visit a few times and get tired of. Not traif. The value is spectacular. I think the tasting menu was up to $62 the last time I visited (up from $45 when it opened around 2010 if I recall correctly, so the price has increased less than CPI inflation), plus an obligatory service fee in lieu of a tip. (A positive in my mind, I hate tipping culture.) For 10 or so dishes. That's like $6 a dish before the service fee and tax. You can hardly buy any prepared food dish in the city for $6. The cheapest items at Woorijip are $5. A slice of pizza at a midrange pizzeria is $5. You're getting around 10 excellent dishes at a fancy chef grade quality level for $6 each. There is a wide range of flavors, spices, ingredients, and textures. The ambience is comfortable, casual, and hipsterish. You can come as you are, you don't need to dress up. The patio is really nice when weather allows. There is enough space between tables (by NYC standards) for comfort. The cocktails are also quite good. I usually order two. Haven't tried the wine pairing as I'm not as much of a wine drinker. The service is consistently good. Traif is my standard of comparison for more expensive fine-dining restaurants. Any time I eat at a more expensive meal, I ask myself, did I enjoy the food more or less than I would have enjoyed a $62 meal at traif. More often than not, traif wins. The exceptions are usually at least 2x as expensive as traif. That's not to say there's no merit in trying those other restaurants, for the sake of variety or their unique ambiance. But like I was in Honolulu recently and had a tasting menu in Waikiki that was 3x the price of traif and it was terrible. Every dish was the same flavor, umami and salt. They put all their XP into plating and textures, and none into flavors. I was at Bad Roman recently and spent $100 before tax and tip on dinner and one drink. The ambiance was sublime, but the food was just so-so. Other than their neighboring sister restaurant xixa (similar format but Mexican-inspired), I know of no other restaurant in NYC where you can get nearly this price point for such high quality cheffy food. There used to be a few others maybe. They went out of business or raised their prices. Only traif and xixa remain. I've spent a lot of time looking. I haven't found any. As an Ashkenazi atheist, I also love how the name and theme of the restaurant poke fun at kashrut.

Traif is a really special restaraunt with curated dishes to share. It's in a pretty small space…read morewhich feels homey and friendly. Looks like they have a cute outside dining area in the back although I didn't venture into it. Probably would be great for a balmy evening meal. All the food we got was delicious - they have a lot of pork and seafood on the menu. Everything was shareable and so flavorful. Really enjoyed the food. They'll try to sell you on the Chef's Choice but it just didn't seem like an efficient route for our table so we just ordered the items that caught our eye. Only reason for 4 stars is because the waiter's attitude changed a bit when we didn't order any alcoholic drinks. There's an automatic 20% tip here and it's already a pricey place so seems like a strange attitude to have...

I…read morecooked for my friend the other night & he was shocked by "what an amazing cook" I am...joke's on him... all I do is add GPT's Coffee Rub &/or El Capitan to anything and suddenly I'm a genius in the kitchen ;) I have a TON of their spices, trying to remember them all... but my other go-to jars are Black Bear, Dracula's Nightmare, and Sedona Red! My co-worker is a VERY picky cook and is the daughter of an old school Brooklyn butcher; I gifted her some GPT spices over 5 years ago for a holiday gift & she's been a cult follower of theirs ever since!! I also love to send my relatives in California a gift card to Omaha Steaks with a basket of various Greenpoint Trading spices... its a hit every time! I don't write reviews often, but when you walk into their adorable shop in BK, you can't help but to fall in love with them and want to do everything you can to help the brand grow & grow & grow! If you're there on a weekend, you also may get to meet the owners (the cutest married couple) & their adorable little boy who pops in to say hello from time to time :) One last thing... I started following them on Instagram recently & get THE BEST ideas of what the spices are good to use on. For example, I would have never thought to put Coffee Rub on my avocado toast... and now it just seems like cardboard without it!!!

The bread was soft and chewy! I would pass on the NY strip steak though, nothing special. I might try the ribeye next time. I did LOVE the bone marrow toast. The panna cotta was the star of the two dishes. I'm curious about the tiramisu too. Another reason to go back!! Overall, would recommend.

There's an area in the front that was more of a typical restaurant atmosphere, but we sat in the covered garden room in the back, which was a really nice ambiance. We ordered one of their specials, a toast with arugula and beef carpaccio, as well as the squid ink pasta, which came out to be $60 total. The beef carpaccio on the toast was my favorite bite of the meal. The bread was also a good level of crisp, and I liked the flavor of the spread on top. The squid ink pasta had a good tomato and white wine flavor in the sauce, and I enjoyed the al denteness of the noodles. However, I did find the pasta to be a bit sandy, so I don't think the clams were fully cleaned.

The menu has so many options that I found it hard to choose (which is not a bad thing), but we went with the caesar salad, meatball pie, and gluten free saffron gigli + the rainbow cookie sundae. Caesar salad was delicious but the only caveat was that it was a little small. Wish there was more lettuce on this one! Perfect dressing and light + fresh. Meatball pie- was not one I would have chosen off the bat but I'm glad we did. Very good and the dough is sourdough and perfect. Can't wait to try other pizza options. Saffron Gigli- was very different, but also good. Glad it was gluten free- it's very sweet tho just as a heads up! Rainbow cookie sundae was also very unique and delicious. The rainbow cookies on the side were a little dry but the inside of the sundae was decadent and the vanilla gelato was a really nice touch. The only feedback I'd give is that the prices are very expensive especially for the pizzas, pastas and dessert. Otherwise we would absolutely return! oh also! we originally came in to try the pasta special which offers a few different pastas on one plate and the half pie option but neither were offered when we came in so that was slightly disappointing :/
