"Dear Mike's Garden Center, Please stop selling Asclepias curassavica (tropical milkweed, bloodflower, scarlet milkweed, sunset flower, silkweed). They hurt us. Please carry Asclepias incarnata, A. tuberosa, A. syriaca, A. speciosa, and A. asperula instead. It's actually illegal to ship curassavica to Texas. Sincerely, the Monarchs." The Mike's Garden Center manager was brusque and pounded on themes that were not relevant to my request that they consider not selling the milkweed that hurts Monarchs and is deemed by the Texas government to be a noxious weed which cannot be shipped here. We had brought in two Asclepias we'd purchased only to discover they were A. curassavica. Earlier I had at first mistakenly called Weston Gardens in Bloom (8101 Anglin Dr, Fort Worth) where I had purchased an A. tuberosa (and wanted to buy their A. incarnata) to ask if they accepted returns. They graciously said yes if we brought the receipt. I figured Mike's Garden Center might be just as gracious and if not I'd just have to destroy the Monarch-killing plants. I went. I brought my neck fan because it is always a miserable apocalyptic-temperature at Mike's except in January. I saw the "NO RETURNS NO EXCHANGE" sign and said "OK. But I'm really here to talk to the manager." The cashier said they might make an exception under the circumstances and she said she'd get the manager. He showed up loaded for bear. Calmly, I showed him the facts from the federal government's website, and the statistics from the Smithsonian, and "Molecular Ecology." I asked if he'd consider not selling it anymore as politely as if my beloved genteel gramma were watching me. "Irregardless of what's on your little paper people buy it." "It's not my little paper -- it's a government website." "Irregardless, people buy it." "Because tropical milkweed doesn't die back and they are trying to help the Monarchs and they don't know about the harm curassavica does. You didn't even identify it as Tropical Milkweed -- only as Asclepias. This kills Monarchs, and you could sell the good ones instead." But he was loaded for bear and he shot his load. Kept barking at me that I wasn't getting a refund. "That's not why I'm here. I wanted to ask you to consider not selling plants that hurt Monarchs." Kept barking at me that I wasn't getting an exchange. Still calm, still smiling though it didn't reach my eyes: "That's not why I'm here. I wanted to ask you to consider not selling plants that hurt Monarchs." Lather, rinse, repeat repeatedly. I said to Husband "Let's go. No, don't pick them up carefully, we have to destroy them." I grasped one of the two $15 plants and snapped its stems in half, walked out to the parking lot and holding it by the mangled stems bashed it to bits. The root ball got even by bouncing back and slapping my face. I was covered in dirt. I smiled instantly and gleefully, and took a photo of my dirty self in front. Weston Gardens in Bloom (8101 Anglin Dr, Fort Worth) sells the good milkweeds (Asclepias incarnata and A. tuberosa), not the killer milkweed and graciously will give you an exchange if you bring the receipt. I purchased a Japanese Maple Tree with a tag label "Red" Japanese Maple After a year of it remaining green, I called Mike's Garden Nursery to ask why it is still green. I was told to put it in the sun for it to turn red. After another 6 months, it is still green, not the beautiful red I thought I paid for. I contacted Mike's and was told by the Manager that they would not let me exchange it, even though it was labeled "red". He blamed the mislabel on the distributor. We will no longer patronize Mike's because good customers are not valued. I do not recommend this business. They do not guarantee their plants and products. Sometimes I come by just to enjoy the serenity and charm of this place. Outside, they have a couple of huge greenhouses that are filled with wonderful plants. There is also a section with various sized pots and planters in several different colors and designs. They have a large selection of flowers, herbs, shrubs, succulents, and many other plants. Their plants are fairly priced, and oftentimes, I find popular plants here for a fraction of the cost. If you have a garden, you will love it here! Inside they have more delicate pots and other gardening items (humming bird feeders, fertilizer, seeds, etc...). However, my favorite part is the customer service. Whenever I have come, every worker has been very helpful and knows a lot about the plants and items in their section. They have given me tips on everything from how much water each plant needs, to what plants grow well together, and even what plants smell good together. Terrible customer service at the Crowley location!!! Terrible access and parking lot! We went specifically on Wednesday for the Sr Citizen discount day. They would not honor that as the items that we bought were on sale...even though the ad never mentions that. When we asked 3 separate times about specific plants and their location, we were just pointed in a general direction. When loading the multiple plants onto a cart and then when unloading into our truck, we had absolutely no help. I asked the rude cashier if there was anyone to help load our truck with our two large carts full of plants and was told "there's someone out there". Nope! Not a soul! Called ahead to check availability of crape myrtle. Arrived, asked girl at front of store where to locate and she pointed to a greenhouse area. After wandering around the warehouse size greenhouse, I saw an employee, however I did not speak his language, so back to the front. I asked the same girl again and her response was "they always move things around so I don't know." I suggested she find another employee so she turned to an older man and he tells me " they are out front" (sometimes just pointing is not sufficient on such a large property). I walked out front, seeing another sea of plants, no crape myrtle in sight, got in my car and left, and will not return. I called the manager but he seemed pretty disinterested. I guess the pandemic has not had an economic effect on your business so you can afford to lose customers. read more

Unless he plants them (what a scam that is). What is Mike afraid of? An employee told me I could work something out with them. Not so, according to the owner. Mike does not honor his employees promises. OK. I spent $142 dollar for a shade tree in March and it is dead. Mike has no integrity or hono. I offered a REDUCED replacement (As HIS employee said!). He pointed to the sign which absolves him of any common buisness practices. N Sperry says watch out for nurseries that don't honor what they say. Mike encouraged me to share my thoughts here and other media platforms as well as BBB. My suggestion: go somewhere where they don't sell damaged products and with no way to resolve It. Pretty decent selection, however a lot of the plants did not look healthy. They have cats, which doesn't bother me but certain areas smelled heavily of cat urine which is very unpleasant. They don't seem to keep it very clean, a lot of dust and spiderwebs. I get that it's a nursery but I have seen cleaner conditions. Some of the staff was helpful, while others didn't seem to know much and the lady at the counter was kind of rude. We found a clay pot that was in their 30% off section, when we went to check out the rude lady tried charging us full price and then when I said we didn't want it, she magically dropped the price. Definitely felt like she was trying to take advantage. Didn't like the vibe, so we won't be back. read more

They sold me two sky pencil holly trees that had begun to yellow and I was told they would perk up once planted. They continued to yellow and ultimately died even after I followed instructions and cared for them carefully. They told me they do not guarantee their plants and no exchanges or refunds. I feel taken advantage of and ripped off. They do not do right by the customer. DO NOT SHOP here! I'm out $300 now which may not be a lot to some people but it was a lot to me. This place is huge! I spent almost 2 hrs there and still didn't get a chance to explore it all! I noticed how hard working, friendly and knowledgeable the staff seemed to be! They had deals and specials everywhere. I walked out with 4 beautiful fruit and nut trees, loads of shrubs(7), 2 giant bags for potting soil/growers mix and several planters of flowers for $360. There is quite a bit of single-review orangehead activity here, which certainly makes me suspicious. However, I will gladly offer my $.02. I've been to Mike's for a number of things over the past couple years. They take care to always have organic gardening products, but they do "sell out" and carry the high chemical products as well. They do have a business to run, after all. I think their value is pretty good, even though you might be able to find lower prices on actual plants at the big box retailers. Mike's is worth the trip to get advice from the gardeners on staff, and they will go out of their way to make suggestions to help you. I definitely plan to return to Mike's to start my tomato garden up in the spring, and I will likely be back before then for my fall lawn/gardening needs. Look for an update at that time. BTW - The parking lot gets pretty crowded on Saturdays, particularly during the spring. It seems some folks find good value here. read more

I have shopped at Mikes since the first one on Crowley Road went out of business and then came back. But Sunday 5/15/2017 I went in with my 30% coupon for Crape Myrtles. The asian woman that I found to ask question, I could tell didn't really want to be there, I asked she said across the street, I searched, could not find what I was looking for, went back found her in back of the store. Asked if she would show me where they are, she said I can not leave the store, so I started to, and then she dragged herself to the front of the store and finally pointed. I went found what I wanted and came it to check out. I asked the price, as I didn't see it. Young man from out side, showed me. I gave my coupon to the woman and she said that would be $68 and I said, what about the 30% discount. I said that would $20, she said she was sorry but she didn't know how to use the cash register to get me the discount. I took my card back and went somewhere else. Mike will never see this, but if I were him and saw it it would kill me. My advice to Mike's is to make sure you have people that enjoy working on weekends with positive attitudes and perhaps some retraining to make sure your employees know how to give clients the Discounts that you Spend $1000's of dollars advertising to get us in your store. Came by in November looking for houseplants. BIG MISTAKE. First, their entrance is extremely obscure if you have never been and are using google maps to get in. Second, it is in a rough part of town where I was fearful for my safety. Third, they were selling rouuuugh (read: dead) plants. Fourth, they had a nut shucking device going that was grinding so loud, I wish I had ear covers to protect my eardrums! Fifth, their pots are sooooo dusty. Sixth, across from the pots was a paper plate with remnants of someone's meal and a plastic fork--gross! How long had that been there? Seventh, the employee at the register was talking loudly to presumably another employee about his tardiness very angrily--so she did not notice I was wanting to purchase a pot. I gave up on this nightmare of a business. I did not expect this from the google reviews. Maybe this place is better in the summer. Today was not a good look for this location. It is night and day compared to the other location up North. I would not bring anyone I cared for to this place nor will I ever return. Not sure how they stay in business like this. read more

I've been in several times. A lot of selections but the problem for me, each time, is that maybe half the plants, bushes etc are not labeled as to what they are and are not marked with a price. I went in 3-16-15 and couldn't find what I was looking for and saw many items w/o lables/prices yet again. I saw no available employees to ask for help and I walked by the register coming in/out. They have some nice stuff, but I will NEVER buy trees or more pricey things from them again. The Kiefer pear I purchased broke out in a horrible case of fire blight within 2 weeks of planting it. They basically said, 'too bad for you'. I can now see where earlier fireblight was likely trimmed away so the tree would look ok. Sneaky and disappointing. They have some great staff members, but for quality trees, I will stick to Redenta's and Calloway's from now on. read more

Yes, I do have that many flower pots and yes I will get up and water them every day. Best place to buy Christmas trees! Beautiful full Fraser Firs from Oregon and North Carolina. They have some great 12 footers that blew me away. Bought my 9 foot tree for $126. It's nicer than anything you would find at the Hardware stores. I've never done any other shopping here so can't say it's great for everything. read more

I like the selection here, but the few times I've called to ask questions it's been hard to get answers and most recently I overbought as I was planting my beds for the season and had 3 extra plants to return (within 48 hours and in perfect condition). I did not notice that they state no refunds or exchanges on the receipt. Sometimes you just need to get home and lay out the pots and see what fits, and not being able to return an item is just inconvenient and silly. I'll continue to buy at Calloway's after this experience just due to their friendly return policy. They are pricier, but it's worth it to me. read more

Absolutely bad customer service! I asked about a particular 5 gallon tree so I followed the employee to where they were and he pulled out one that was so bent over so I asked if they had more and he took out one more that was even more bent. I noticed that it wasn't a 5 gallon ($39) but it was a 7 gallon ($89.) so I asked if there was any 5 gallon like I had originally asked for and he said no then walked off. I ended up walking through the trees and found some 5 gallon ones and ended up having to carry it all over the place looking for my second tree. Anyhow, when I went to pay it was supposed to be 20%off when you buy two trees but the lady (manager maybe) said nope, it has to be the same identical two trees but it says right there on their counter 20% off mix and match! Then she said that my Italian Cypress Tree was a bush not a tree. Seriously??? Such a disappointing place, I'll never go back. read more

I don't trust them and they seem high for the quality. I tried to purchase a plant there a few days ago and they wouldn't sell it to me for the price marked. It was 50% off when I got from the table. The cashier said the manager had to approve the sale. The manager said no, and did not approve the sale for the price marked on the plant. It was small Nandina for that said 50% off $2.49. There was another price on the pot $7.99. The sale price was apparently supposed be removed when they put the product out when it was taken off the truck.. So from where I sit it looks like they received a truckload of rejects from somewhere else and appear to be passing them off to us marked up. Such a tiny price issue should not have been an issue at all. Take that Mike! read more
