I have recently lost a number of pounds (thanks Peloton) and came to Mike's Custom Tailor (now owned and ran by Luis) to get a number of pants/skirts/blazers taken in! Luis was incredibly thorough - he made sure that after I tried on each item of clothing and agreed on where to take in, that I was comfortable with the new sizing. He discussed the pricing on each garment UP FRONT and had all 7 items ready for me within a week (corduroy blazer from boden, tartan skirt from saint & sophia, number of jeans from j. crew/banana republic etc). When I came to pick them up, I tried every item on and they fit as expected! I was so delighted with the work that I just returned from my second drop off of 5 pairs of jeans, corduroy holiday pants and a dress. If you come to Luis (owner of Mike's Custom) you will have the chance to try on your items, talk through the alterations, discuss the pricing on each item and then show up within a week to pick up! And a large majority never even answered the phone or called me back without even knowing what work I needed done. Hey! There is a new Tailor in town. And his name is LUIS. He has bought the business and made a few changes. Luis has a pleasant demeanor and more customer friendly hours of business too! Mon, Tues, Thurs. Fri. 8am - 6pm and Weds. & Sat 8am - 5pm. My husband's work pants which Nordstrom hemmed were constantly coming down. Annoying when you're trying to get out the door of a morning. So I took them a couple of places to figure out what was wrong..... Luis suggested starting from scratch and removing the chance of putting a foot in the hem. I brought a sport jacket and a large heavy winter coat to Luis, each needing a size reduction and a style "modernization." The jacket needed to have the shoulders taken in, including a re-alignment of the sleeves. Also, its length needed to be reduced slightly. The coat also had to have a reduction in the shoulders, as well as in the bulk of the arms. I chose Luis because if the very fine reviews. The work on both of these items was done extremely well. Both garments are "like new," and Luis's charge was reasonable, particularly in view of the fact that any attempt on my part to match the quality of each of the items via purchase from Nordstrom's (where each was originally bought) in today's market would have been considerably higher. read more

I took in 5 jeans to get stitched up for some tears along the knees and crotch area December 12. Went to pick them up on the 15th and was only given 4 jeans, unfortunately the ones that are missing were the nicer of them all. I'm here for work so I'm traveling with a carry on and I know the exact number of items in my wardrobe. I mentioned there was one pair missing when I picked them up and was told I didn't bring in 5. I called them back after I checked my car and also called them the next morning after checking my suitcase. The upsetting part is that I called to see if they were misplaced by accident or perhaps fell behind a counter, instead I was told that they were not there and why would he keep them since it wasn't his style and he wouldn't wear them. That made no sense to me since I wasn't thinking that but now I am. If they were a pair of inexpensive jeans I wouldn't be so upset but these were my favorite from Seven for All Mankind and now someone else is wearing them. I wouldn't trust this place. read more

Got a really nice hand-me-down suit from my Dad, but it was too big almost everywhere except for the pants length and the sleeve length. Originally, I took it to Hector and Maria's a few blocks away, but the result was not satisfactory with a clear bulge along the shoulder/neckline, puffs around my thighs, and a crotch area that was still way too big. Maria said she couldn't do more so I came here. After going to pick up my suit today and Sophie asking me to try it on in the shop to verify the work was good in both of our opinions, I could not be more glad I brought it here. She clearly had to do a lot of amendments, but the fit looked like a brand-new custom tailored suit right out of the clothier. She quoted me $120 and honored that quote. This is clearly a tailor who is well-trained and able to handle complicated fixes. I recommend. My brother has a suit and separate pair of trousers that he's picking up later this week. read more

I had nothing but good things to say about this place and Sophie, and I took many garments here for alteration, including suits, dresses, and slacks. Unfortunately, when things went wrong, they went really wrong. I brought in a summer dress with an open back, which needed to be shortened and taken in a bit on the sides. When I came to pick it up, I found that she had basically redesigned the dress by cutting the back straps down from 12" to about 3" and crossing them over each other where they hadn't been before, thereby eliminating the open back. The open back was one of the things I loved about the dress, so I was miffed. I said it was unacceptable and explained the problem, and she first tried to tell me I misremembered how the dress looked when I brought it in two weeks prior. Then, after I showed her a picture of the dress on the website I bought it from, she said it was better as redesigned because the open back wouldn't have permitted me to wear a bra with the dress. I then explained that I had never planned to wear a bra with it but regardless, that was none of her concern. She said she would fix it, but it would cost more. I went back a second time, and she had used scraps of fabric previously removed from the dress to remake the longer straps. I figured I would just have to live with the patchwork straps, but then the dress hung crookedly on my frame. I went back a third time, and the dress finally fit and resembled what I bought (patchwork straps notwithstanding), and she told me the previously $40 job was now $120 for all of the "extra work." The dress only cost $100. I grudgingly paid but haven't been back. It's too bad bc I was so pleased with everything I had done there up to that point. But with the unwanted redesign, gaslighting and lack of accountability, moral judgment about which under garments I may or may not wear, and exorbitant charges for mistakes that shouldn't have been made in the first place, it was just too much. I take all of my clothes that require tailoring to Ah Sew in Westmont now. read more

I find her prices very reasonable and her work exceptional. I love the old school feel of the shop and have always had great experiences here. I inquired about the cost to take in a suit and was told $45 ($20 for the coat; $25 for the trousers). "Great!" sez me. "I'll be right in!" After being measured up, I offered to pay. "No," sez the seamstress. "You pay when you pick up. Give me 10 days." 11 days later I come in to pick up the suit (with, if the alterations were well done, another suit) and was presented with a $120 invoice. "Why did you tell me $35?" asks me. "$35 is for 'basic' but I did the sleeves, the back...a lot of work" sez she. "I see," sez me. "You didn't tell me it would be more when you measured me. Wouldn't that have been the time to tell me the cost would be $120?" Responds she: "How was I to know until I started to work on it?" I have no doubt Mike's Custom Tailor is worth every penny. Brought 2 pairs of pants in there to get waist done. Asked when they would be done she said give me 1 week. Went a week later not done, she said Monday you come back. Went back Monday not done. Went Wednesday they were done...for $80 because she 'did a lot of work'. No charge only cash, had to go to get cash. Not sure how this place stays open. read more

Never going back. The woman that works there did a bad job on my Hawks sweater. The Stanley cup championship patch turned out very poorly. I went back and had my motorcycle jeans shortened. Those came out well. What was a deal breaker was when I dropped off 2 sport coats and a pair of pants. I showed up 1 week after dropping off my items and she told me the sport coat sleeves couldn't be shortened because they had functioning buttons. Fair enough. Pants? She didn't touch them. Told me to get a cup of coffee and would take 5 minutes. Sorry, try a week and 5 minutes. She had my phone number. She could've called me. Now I'll be taking pants to another tailor since she literally did nothing for me and I'll never go back. read more

Great tailor... Sophie is very talented. Yes very direct and matter of fact but the work is as good as I've found in the city. Had to really alter a dress for me and sew elbow patches on a jkt for my husband- both came out perfect. Prices weren't cheap but fair for the level of quality. Went to bring in my son's old baby blanket, which was sewn by his grandmother who is passed, to have a patch sewn on and he is expecting a child soon. The owner told me it deserved to be in the garbage. Very rude will never go back there again. read more

I brought my son's favorite cashmere sweater in for repair. I thought it had just a few moth holes in it and was worth fixing. After the tailor looked at it, we discovered there were more like 20 holes. She quoted me $45 to repair it. I questioned whether it was a good idea, but went ahead anyway. I don't know where all the reviews went for this place, but I have to say that I'll never go to another tailor again. The top of my wedding dress was covered in intricate beading, it was a size 16, and Sophie managed to size it down to an 8 without it looking like it had ever been touched, inside or out. On top of that, she hand-steamed the whole thing - it was just breathtaking. She was incredibly helpful, informative, welcoming, an absolute pleasure to work with. To boot, I can't remember if it was $200 or $250 for the alteration, but either way that was half or less than half of what I was expecting to have to pay for that much work. If you need a tailor and you live anywhere in the Chicagoland area, you should come to Mike's! It's worth the drive, you'll never regret your decision, and your clothes will come out looking fantastic. You can't beat great work. read more

Paid $45 to get a casual summer maxi dress hemmed, it had print on the bottom so I asked if I could have it take in from the waist to save the pattern, I was understanding that this is more difficult for the seamstress to do, but when I went to put on the dress after picking it up, I noticed about 6 holes along the waist of the dress on the back, it seemed like these parts were just not sewn at all. I love helping out local shops but I think next time I am going to put $45 toward a sewing machine and hem things myself from now on. read more
