Our plumber retired. He gave us a list of three plumbers that he would recommend first. I called that night. They told me to call back in the morning. I thought there might be a leak in the wall between the commode and shower. I made the appointment they came out that afternoon. They were very polite to me. My roommate was w the plumber onsite. She said he was friendly. They quickly found it was the seal on the commode and we just had to pay for the basic rate plus about 4 dollars of materials. They were quick reliable and honest. I'm being generous by giving an extra star, but before you read, know that the context is in regards to the extortionate price I was given for two workers to just look at a simple gas leak I may have had. There is a solid man that works here which is the only reason I tried them out. They were not recommended to me by a personal reference and that was my mistake for reaching outside my inner network. I did not even check the reviews and that's a bad in me. The two men arrived on time and were professional and kind and seemed very knowledgeable. I mentioned vocally three times to get a price or quote before ANY work was to start. I made a point of looking the lead guy in the eye to make sure my message and concern was received. I will protect his name by not mentioning him as he was a nice guy and professional. As he and his co-worker start "checking" the pipes along with me on my hands and knees in the dirt with them. I cleared a 5 lb pile of dirt that I had placed over a pipe and showed them a possible leak. They nodded and proceed to do some checks. They were at the home for a little over 45 minutes and mentioned a quote to cap off the pipes or to rerun some pipe which I thought was a bit high. So I said I would think on it...which meant no. As they wrapped up I was presented with a bill for 420.00 on labor!!! I calmly said, "No guys...just no....this isn't right." Now I'm an educated working professional who deals with high level corporate execs and I can tell you two things from this transaction. A. The plumbers are paid on a salary and they have to bill out a certain amount of hours and monies to keep a seat at the table(like major attorney firms) Or B. These guys were hard up for money and thought I was stupid enough to nod my head and just pay it. For no work done. Or C. I have no idea why in the world a decent working man would need to have the audacity to even make an invoice like that. I'm at a loss. There was going to be thousands of dollars poured into this company and that was lost on the very first visit due to negligence in making a charge for work done-which was none. I spoke to my contact and agreed to pay 100 dollars as a stake mate and end the transaction. After having some time to think on it and speak to a few other plumbers within my network and highly recommended by word of mouth, I have decided to let ways indefinitely with this company. A note to leadership: there are far too many options these days and relationships are everything. If you just focus on the transactional then that's all you will get, but the keen businessman will always look at the longevity of the client and one family can refer you 10 families if you do a good job...the job that from what I understand the original mr. Staas did for people. Stop focusing on your damn numbers and focus on people. Go back to what the founder did. That's my free coaching and consulting advice that people pay for. I had Mike Staas Service (plumbing) come out to hook up a gas line to a generator. Steve did the estimation, Dylan the service. All went fine. Then my wife had Dylan come back to check a suspect leak in the upstairs shower. $325 later, no leak. Note, I live 30-40 min from their office. I asked my wife if they checked the meter to see if there are any house leaks...no, she said. In fairness, she did not ask. So I called, spoke to Steve again, he repeated himself many times, and I repeated myself many times. Steve's side: your wife asked, and we did. My side: checking any leak in a house (bathroom, kitchen, laundry) presupposes looking at the meter, and seeing if it is running with "everything off". Steve maintained his position that "unless you ask specifically for it, we won't do it". Ok, but what Steve also seems to fail to realize, if that finding a leak "somewhere" via seeing if the water meter "runs" while everything "is off", this will lead to more business (i.e. isolation, and fixing)...far from rocket science, and a win/win. I tried to explain this, and offered to work it out (discount, etc.) with threat of a bad review if he didn't, since this was a silly omission on their part. Steve kept repeating himself, again and again "your wife didn't ask, so we didn't do". Got it, the first time. Meanwhile I have two sick kids (apparently from mold) and are staying with their grandparents until this gets sorted. I work out of town, and I won't be able to get back for another weak to fix what these "professional plumbers" could have easily have found "if my wife asked the right question". Mike Staas plumbing is not interested in a common sense approach; i.e. looking at the meter in the street and seeing if there is a leak "somewhere". Mike Staas plumbing plays games, they do not shoot straight, and if Steve/Mike Staas had a shred of decency, he would have sent Dylan over to do what should have been done the time he put a plug in my upstairs shower, told my wife to "keep an eye on it" and had us unplug it later, for $325, that is do a basic whole house leak check and take it from there. Mike Staas plumbing will argue and yell the second something isn't perfect, and blame you for not communicating with your spouse. I asked Steve why I wasn't included in the service call for the 2nd trip (the $325 shower plug), and Steve told me that was between me and my wife. Maybe he's right, maybe it is just between me and my wife, but another thing between me and my wife is to not use Mike Staas plumbing, and to recommend others in the Waco area to recognize that this plumbing business is out for their own gain, and not what is in the best interest of their customers. Any plumber with more than one brain cell will check the meter with the faucets (etc.) off to see what's going on inside, and confirm the presence of a leak. Not Mike Staas, you have to specifically ask for that. I promised them a review with the facts, and challenged them to correct anything that I have wrong. I've built and remodeled a lot of houses and condos and this company is excellent. An actual HUMAN answered the phone and scheduled it quickly. Plumber was friendly, on time and had two good size jobs to do and was done in 3 hours. Another franchise plumber quoted a ridiculous amount of money and 12 hours to switch out a sink. Stass was less than a third of that quote and did it quickly and competently. I own a couple of properties in Waco and I'll definitely call Mike Staas again if I need plumbing or bathroom/kitchen repair or rennovation. read more

Called out there for someone to come look at my tankless water heater, and was given a date for a guy to come out! The day came and the person that was supposed to come out ended up calling in sick and no one was aware, and they had to send out another gentleman, but is not a big deal and was very understandable. The gentleman came out. Looked at the water heater asked me to turn the water on and off for him due to my water heater is in my crawlspace. Stated that I needed an igniter and he would order one. I never heard anything until I called back two days later and they stated that the part should be in tomorrow and they would reschedule to come out! They did not reschedule. They simply randomly called me and stated they would be on their way and I was at work so I had to tell them to wait until I could get off! Then the guy proceeded to go up there put the parts on and stated the water heater was working, which was working for about a day. Charged me $240 to tell me that the water heater would have to be moved from the crawlspace did not offer to quote me what it would charge to move the water heater and it is now been two weeks and I am without a water heater, I have called three times, and no callbacks! I had a very short window of opportunity while working on our investment property. I called a few plumbing companies and none answered. I moved on to Mike Staas and asked for their hourly service fees, then requested a visit to lower the in-wall drain trap connection for a deeper sink I had just installed. They said they would leave the office at 8am the next day and show up around 8:30. They showed up just before 8:30. The plumber was polite, listened to my request to bring the trap to code and looked at the connections to the designer sink drain I had. He told me he would have to cut through my wall which was fine. I appreciated his candor. He worked steadily to do it right which I told him that I was more interested in keeping to code rather than cutting corners. There were special plumbing parts that he needed to which he went to a nearby plumbing supply to get. Keep in mind every plumbing job is different. He came right back and got to work again. I'm extremely pleased with his work ethic. He was calm, polite, very clean and performed the water test and water hold which I did not request yet expect from every plumbing profesional. These tests are done to check for leaks in any connection. He asked me to watch so I could witness the results myself. I did. No leaks! Points to working with plumbing professionals I found helpful: Tell them your window of service and ask if you can be accommodated. Tell them exactly what you need done so they can know what they are working with. Tell them you need it done right - they respect that much more than getting it done fast. When they arrive, be polite and be ready to let them work. Clear the area for them to do the work. Most people don't want to be held responsible for moving other people's things. Offer to let them use your restroom if they need to. The job may take longer than you think it should take a professional so let them know you're being considerate of their humanity. They -and we - are not robots. Ask them if they need a bottle of water to stay cool because working around tight spaces can make you break a sweat. Don't rush them if they're working hard. Plumbing is not an easy process. If it were, you'd do it yourself - especially when it's the law to keep things to code. Don't be surprised if they say you need to replace a water line or valve to a new one if it's leaking. If you replace a valve, replace the water hose. They go hand in hand. You'll get better service by being polite. I'm not a plumber but I work with contractors a lot. There's no better service than one from someone who feels appreciated. I make sure everyone feels welcomed despite what my personal feelings are at any given time. We are all human and have expectations from service people. Remind yourself to see yourself through their eyes. You get what you give. It costs us time and money to bring in a professional. The result was spectacular. This was a commercial sink you don't see every day. The drain line was not pvc and it needed to be plumbed properly. My service rep was wonderful and did it to code, as expected. Don't be in too much of a rush if you want things done right. I'll be keeping Mike Staas on my speed dial. I enjoyed working with the plumber they sent over and I'll be sure to request him if I ever need them again. read more

Incredibly professional. Their plumber uninstalled and hauled out the old water heater and reinstalled a new water heater with new water lines and the works in just 3 and a half hours! That's nuts! He had all of his equipment. Only left once to get the new water heater. He kept our floors clean with plastic tarp material and shoe covers. He was very respectful of our space and He was fantastic at what he does. Mike Staas is lucky to have that guy as an employee. I'd recommend them based on that experience. Great work read more

Clint Staas came out to replace sink valves. Asked to check both toilet connections (He visually glanced from an upright stance, no tool) and replace an outdoor valve. POOR SERVICE!!! He left a puddle under the sink, only looked at toilet connections didn't actually touch. (week later found leaking) He over tightened the outdoor valve and it cracked. Costing me a $100 in leaked water. NEVER use them!!! Staas Plumbing saw this review an immediately called me. They were very concerned an wanted address any issues. Toilet valves were bad as verified by another employee. They sent out a very polite fiield supervisor who replaced the faulty valves and apologized. I am happier. Wish I didn't have that extra Cost due to outside leak from overtight cracked hose bib. read more

This is certainly not the cheapest service in town but you really get what you pay for. The servicemen were very professional and thorough. They came when they said they would and got right to work. You have to wait by the phone even when you have a scheduled appointment. When I noticed that I missed a call I Was told since I didnt answer that my appt had been bumped. i had been waiting all morning. i said ok when can they come and they said may be an hour may be 3. so i said please asap. i called back a little later to see if they may be able to come on out a little earlier and i got a girl this tine. Same old attitude she said they dont send people out unless they get someone on the phone. i said that was not the way i did business, that when I set an appoinrment, i go to it. She proceeded to accuse me of yelling at her. i did not yell and my wife can verify because she was near me. i told them to cancel the appointnent. i turned them in to The BBB and they responded to the BBB that I yelled at them and they had me on speaker and the whole office heard. Not true. i also dont appreciate being put on speaker without my consent. Instead of trying to have customer service they elected to cover their employees. Needed a faucet replaced. Tried to do it myself, but the fittings were corroded and was afraid of making things worse if I continued the job myself. I called just about everybody in the phonebook. Talked to all kinds of companies including one that wanted to charge me $35 just to come take a look. Huh? After getting a ridiculously high quote from Mr. "fill in the blank", I called Staas Services. The guy who answered the phone was very friendly and told me the job would take maybe an hour/hour and a half tops. Plumber came out next day and installed the new faucet in about an hour. He was friendly and knowledgable. Cost was about 1/3 of the other company...and no travel charge. I would use their services again. read more

I have no idea how this company stays in business. We used them one time years ago and vowed to never use them again. Well, my husband and I went on vacation and my mom was watching our home. The downstairs toilets began to overflow when she was washing clothes and she called this company unaware of our previous dealing with them. Anyway, they came out and "fixed" the problem, charged $359 which was paid at the time of service, and the next day the exact same thing happened. When she called them to ask them to come out and warranty their work, they refused, stating it was not their issue. They were so rude to my mom that she was nearly in tears when we got back. She had no knowledge of our previous negative experience, so when she told us this story, there was no previous bias. They are truly awful and I have no idea how they stay in business. read more

My husband and I just bought a house and during the inspection we found out that there might be a leak in the front yard. The prior owners refused to fix it and rather than having an argument we decided to go ahead and purchase the house and have it fixed. I went online and used the Staas appointment request on Saturday afternoon. Sunday went by and they never called to set up a time. Monday at 3, while I'm at work and my phone is in my purse, they call and I miss it. I'm thinking, finally they are calling to set up a time. I call them back just 5 minutes later and the lady that answered the phone says that I missed my slot because I didn't answer the phone. She had to send the plumber to a different location. I state that I've been waiting since Saturday to set a time and when would I get another call. Tomorrow? The next day? . She says that the plumber just can't wait around for me to call back. I just can't up and leave work and my husband can't either. I have never delt with a plumbing company who cannot set a time and they expect you to sit by the phone and drop whatever you might be doing to meet their plumber. We had MIke Staas Services come out and install our new toilet that we provided as well as fix a few minor repairs that needed fixed. I called and explained that when I placed the call some additional plumbing concerns came up and could they address them while there? With no hesitation, they said sure and were on there way. Very professional gentleman came to the house and addressed ALL of our issues. Drive time WAS explained to me beforehand- which on a fixed income I appreciated. Another company I used before failed to mention drive time and tacked it on the bill in the end. Every company charges drive time, and I was glad they let me know upfront. Makes you feel good knowing they arent trying to hide anything.
