At first glance, Miguel's is unassuming. The appetizer of fried avocado was fun and quite tasty. The dish would have been spectacular had the fryer oil been changed recently. It was my fave. The entree was drowned in gloopy sauce, the esquites were simple canned corn with a nondescript cheese sauce, not a fresh side with cotija and lime with tasty chile. The refried beans tasted canned. Our server was sweet and worked hard to rectify a lackluster meal. Not great.

Wanted to try this Mexican spot as we haven't before. We will not be returning. The food is not so great and I had learned the old chef they had when the restaurant was featured in the news/magazines has left the business. So my taste buds did not enjoy the very not authentic food. The ambiance was fun, cliche Mexican spot but our table was still wet and sticky when we sat down. But at least we checked it out.

We stopped in on Taco Tuesday! Husband had three beef tacos for two dollars each. I had two tacos and a margarita for $10.00. Quite the deal! Our daughter got the fried avocados and is now obsessed with them! Complimentary chips and salsa were also great. Can't wait to return.

Amazing vegan options! Everything on the menu can be made with veg fillings - salsa verde tofu, veggie chorizo, or mixed vegetables. And they have dairy free cheese and sour cream and vegetarian beans and rice. This was completely unexpected and we were delighted. They also have plenty of paleo/keto options as well as gluten free options and can accommodate a range of spice levels so if you have a picky crowd to feed I'm pretty sure Miguel's will be able to accommodate everyone. The food was pretty good - we were visiting from California so our Mexican food standards are high. What blew me away was how well they prepared the vegan proteins. I cook soyrizo at home and have had it in plenty of restaurants and never has it tasted as good as it did at Miguel's. I think they add some spices or seasonings of their own and then cook it until there are these delicious crispy bits. Wow. I highly recommend trying it. I had the stuffed avocados and my partner ordered tofu enchiladas. If you aren't keto the stuffed avocados are even better with a side of tortillas. The beans were delicious, I was sad that the refried beans weren't vegetarian but the black beans were flavorful and had a lovely texture. Our server was amazing and the manager stopped by our table as well and was very helpful. Our daughter is a picky eater with food allergies and our server was so thoughtful in helping us order a customized kids meal that she loved.

Mixed reviews. Would definitely try again in the future. We love Mexican food having lived most of our lives close to the California / Mexico border and having traveled into Mexico a lot. In Cali we had great access to wonderful Mexican foods. Here at Miguel's my mom loved her tostada salad with chicken. My Carnitas dinner was just ok -- the corn /esquites was from a CAN (do not recommend!) and my carnitas were way overdone and dry, the tortillas were very dry and not fresh. But the veggies and sauce and chips and salsa were all very good. The coconut fried ice cream was manna from heaven!!! Delicious!!! I'd come again just for it!!! And if I came to try again, I'd try the Rellano (they were out today) or street tacos or fajitas... just do not get the carnitas (unless you order them moist and medium) or esquites(corn) until they start using fresh corn. Service and atmosphere were great!

First visit: Vegan Street Tacos (with "chorizo" and "tofu" fillings). Excellent!!!

[I wrote a review that somehow was inadvertently deleted. This will be shorter....] ;) Three visits to Miguel's Mexican Restaurant; unfortunately, each visit with diminishing results.... First visit was fabulous! Street Tacos (made vegan), service, everything was terrific! Second visit (a week later): Love the gratis chips and hot (spicy) salsa! Service was fine. Ordered the same as the last time, figuring I couldn't go wrong.... Alas, as good as the fillings were, they were served on stale and hard soft taco shells. It was difficult to finish my meal. My other half, too, had tacos on stale shells. Our "high" from the first visit was not matched on visit two. (Perhaps it was simply an off-day??? Well, we said let's give it one more try before writing reviews. Visit three (another week later): Chips, salsa, Modelo Nero: Great! Service: Wholly decent, but definitely "green" as far as experience goes. (We mentioned our last visit as having stale and tough soft shells, and she merely glazed right over the mention and said, "Oh, would you prefer hard tacos this time?" Uh, that wasn't the point.... Like I said, "green.") Anyway, this time around we both decided to order something different, each of us choosing the fried avocado tacos meal (with soft taco shells!). ;) Well, what was presented at service was almost laughable if it weren't so lamentable!!! Two pieces of small fried avocados, laying fairly bare on open-faced shells, with two heaps (respectively) of rice and black beans, and a dap of some kind of sauce atop each taco -- not each piece of fried avocado. (See my accompanying photos of each visit's meal.) Alas, diminishing results on three visits probably won't warrant a return, I'm afraid.... Such a disappointment, as it's not easy finding plant-based/vegan options Down East.... :(

A friend recommended this place since we are vegan and Miguel's has many vegan options if you ask for them. Three visits with a star disappearing each time. The first visit was great, street tacos and a Modelo Negra Mexican Beer. Perfect pairing with great service. Second trip was the street tacos since they were so good the first time. This time, really nasty. The 'soft' corn tortilla was hard and rubbery at the same time. Was hard to even tear it apart, much less bite through it. I think they were stale after the weekend or left out overnight and they tried to revive it in the microwave for too long. Blah! Then the third visit. I ordered the avocado tacos and I mentioned the really bad soft tacos on our last visit and the server looked straight at me and said "so you want the hard shells then," more as a statement and not a question. No sorry or anything. Oh well. The food was good and enjoyed our lunch. The decor is a bit kitsch and the music is mostly cantina band, did I mention they have 2 EV charging stations!!

Our server was helpful and friendly. We started with the standard chips and salsa. I liked it fine, but the salsa was too spicy for my wife. The server offered some enchilada brown sauce for her instead. It was a nice thought, but my wife disliked the taste and, I must agree, when I sampled it I felt it tasted unsuitable, at least for that purpose. It was Margarita Monday and I would have liked to indulge, but I was driving so I demurred. We both ordered taco salads for our meal. Taco salad is also a Monday special, priced a dollar less than the regular dinner version. Just out of curiosity, after my wife ordered the lunch special with guacamole, I ordered the regular dinner version. Our salads looked about the same, except hers had more ground beef for whatever reason. So my experiment was inconclusive. The taco salad was pretty good, and we brought some home with us for later, so it was a good value these days at around $10 each. Ordinarily I would finish by saying we'll be going back again, but the spicy salsa is probably a deal breaker for my wife, unless we bring our own mild salsa!

It did fill up by the time I left (around 12:30). Was seated promptly in a booth, menu with silverware was provided. Menu is huge, took me a while to find the page with lunch specials. (Might have been nice to point it out.) I ordered the chicken burrito lunch special. Chips and salsa came quickly as did a soda. When lunch came, it was just placed and the waiter came and asked "how it was." My response was I haven't tried it yet. The enchilada was mostly rice, with some chicken, and the cheese sauce on the top was COLD. Pretty much the worst enchilada I remember. I ate 1/2 and waited for the waiter to come so I could get a check. English was a struggle for my waiter. I asked for $1 back from my $20 to cover lunch and tip. Said it a couple times, and he eventually just brought me full change to let me leave a tip. Normally, I would have just rounded up and left the $20, but it was just so bad I couldn't. There were many in the restaurant when I left so I'm going to hope I just picked the wrong item. Maybe I'll try again on a Tuesday night.

The server was friendly and attentive, so though she forgot to bring a couple of small items we requested, it was easily fixed. This seems to be one of those basic American style restaurants: not with a broad or imaginative selection, nor one that I'll knock your socks off, but rather with basic food offerings of middling quality. For example, my cheeseburger and onion ring were fine, but not such that I would bring them up later when talking to a friend about restaurants in general. My wife ordered the chef salad, and it was generous, but it took up so much room on the oval plate that she risked pushing items onto the table with every bite. Bringing a second plate from the start would have been a good idea, but she fixed it by asking early for a box to bring some home, as she knew she wouldn't be able to finish it anyway. She was pleased that there was no extra charge for the packet of guacamole she requested. Sometimes it seems places up charge for every little thing. Speaking of prices, they seem elevated for what they offer, but when I thought about it, it felt high compared to what we were paying pre-inflation a year or two ago, not compared to other restaurants. So it is dependable enough so I would be willing to go back (if they are like smaller Dysarts branches they must have good pizza) but it will not be a destination restaurant for us.
