I went in to buy a used tripod head and wish to talk to one of the people there. They definitely act that they're doing you a big favor to wait on you. When I commented about how they coped an attitude, the owner came out and said not to come in the store any more, and escorted me out. I didn't use any profanity or a raised voice nor hurt anyone. I can say that every time in the past when I left it always left a bad taste in my mouth. Their hubris is so apparent! They are not accepting of any criticism whatsoever! As long as you conform to their mode of business and don't create any wrinkles, then you're good to go. A warning for them: life and people have wrinkles! read more

If the rolls of film were blank or had pictures we would be notified by email. Dropped off July 19, 2024. No email, no calls. I reached out via phone September only to be told it's been so long your rolls of film were blank we might have them for you to pick up if you want them. We paid $103 upfront. I said I want them to confirm and I get money back you told my husband. Husband went to pick up and on the phone I was told $40 I would receive back on card. I only received $34.20. Place is a joke. Went in after being told on the phone by a guy that they would could help me out trading my 1 month old camera with less than 400 shutter count in. I stop in they offer me $1800 less than what I paid, while they're selling the same used model of my camera but in worse condition than mine for $1200 more than what they offered. I laughed and walked out. Anyone that is lowballed by them, contact me, I'll beat their offer. Put these garbage companies that try and take advantage of people out of business! Had two used lenses I was looking to sell or trade. Told the woman at the desk that I also had the option of purchasing a used camera body to go with the one Canon lens I had. She looked them up and took them to her buyer. She returned and told me flat out that the store wasn't interested, and actually suggested that I go to World of Photography instead. I was surprised at the fact that they would rather send me away than try and help me. I left somewhat shocked at the curt dismisal. I reached out to them online and received a response apologizing for the negative experience, saying that they wanted to talk with me about it. I said sure, contact me by email anytime. Unsurprisingly, they never got back to me again. So here I am on Yelp. Just want to add that I am a photographer who owns 4 NIKON DSLRs and other equipment, who will likely never consider Midwest Photo for any future purchases. read more

This is a warning about doing business with this company; Midwest Photo. I am a photographer. Anyone who knows me knows I am passionate about my work. To that end, I am always looking to update my equipment. I found a lens on Amazon that was being offered by Midwest Photo. It was used in excellent condition, according to the company. I made the purchase, it arrived a week later, it looked very clean, I packed it into my bag and left for a trip. While traveling, I discovered the lens was not working properly, the stabilization was not working. I sent a note to Midwest through Amazon and they refused to honor a return or a free repair. Instead, the chose not to answer me at all. I had to call them to find out that they would not honor my request and told me I would have to pay $285 to repair the lens which I just purchase from them 6 weeks earlier. The lens was 2 weeks outside their return window. This is a small industry, we all know who the good guys are. When a company treats customers like this, on a small purchase then it's a sign they treat everyone this way. Yes, I was outside of their 30-day window, but if it were me, I would have decided to win over a new customer instead of alienating one. I spend money to keep updated and tend to purchase the latest equipment. This was a missed opportunity for Midwest who could have done the right thing by satisfying a customer who could have been a future customer for years to come. Instead, I am here reporting the facts to you. You should decide for yourself if you want to do business with a company who has no flexibility with high-end customers. In particular, your own well being as a customer doesn't seem to be of interest to this company. I personally value a company who can be flexible and take into account that when a return falls out of the "standard" window, they still honor the return or warranty services the customer needs. When my Jeep busted a drivetrain component 2000 miles outside the warranty period, the dealer was willing to get my Jeep fixed for free and turned me into a lifetime customer. Too bad that lesson was lost on Midwest Photo. Buyer Beware. read more

The service I received today was amazing. Because the store didn't have a demo model of the tripod I wanted, he went out to his car to get his personal tripod which was the model I was interested in. He also presented me with cheaper alternatives and didn't push me towards any particular model. My experience here was perfect! I was assisted and all my questions were answered even if it meant looking up the answer. The store also had everything I could have needed. The brands were quality and not any of that cheap knock off junk. I'm a travel a lot and am not in Columbus very often. Because of my experience here in person, I will be sure to make this a place I visit when I need photography gear. And they have earned my online business as well. I ordered from Midwest online and had a problem! However, I am giving them 5 stars EVEN THOUGHT I HAD A PROBLEM. Why? Because at the end of my order I let them know in the feedback that there was a problem. I didn't rant or blow it out of proportion. It wasn't a huge problem but it would probably result in a delay of the shipment. That may have soured me a touch when thinking about ordering from them again. Shortly after I was contacted by Midwest and they had already looked into my order and made sure it was going out in a way that wouldn't affect delivery. Things don't always go perfect, and when they don't... They need a helping hand. They did help when there was a problem. To me, customer service is dying in so many places. This place is awesome! So far, I've gotten a backdrop set up, 2 backdrops, 2 lenses, a Nikon D610, a very secure backpack that'll hold all my gear and it's thick to protect it from drops, and wireless flash mounts from here. I did get a knockoff battery to my Nikon D90, but it didn't work. That is fault on the company who made it. Never buy third party accessories! I never have luck buying filters from here, I really love ND & 9 stop filters, but they never have them. If you're a photographer, try this place out. Only down side, and they need to improve on this badly.... Customer service. Sometimes I'll have employees walk by me without acknowledging me, some look at me and keep walking, one said hello then turned her back. The list goes on. A local business run by photography professionals that has served the Columbus area for several years. The staff know their equipment and the photography business. They also have quite an Internet presence. The store is crammed with photography equipment and supplies in a relatively small store. That does make it a challenge to walk around. Add being filled with patrons makes one nervous about knocking over expensive equipment or supplies. So, if you get a bit claustrophobic, you might want to search their web site instead. Their staff are very busy; (on the phone, on their computers, talking with customers and even socializing with other staff). It can be quite a challenge to obtain service at times - so patience is a virtue. The more you know about what you are looking for ... the better off you are. Whenever I have looked at camera bodies, lenses and supplies, I have felt rather rushed in the process. The exception to this is the lighting crew - they have been fantastic at learning about your lighting needs and explaining equipment alternatives. Prices are competitively priced for local the market, but are usually higher priced than if you shopped around online. You will want to shop in the store as you can often times find in-store deals that are not advertised online. Photography students receive a discount. They also offer different photography seminars from time to time. With all this said, if you are looking to support a local business as well as a professional photography store that offers a wide range of photography equipment, this is THE place in Columbus. read more

My company was in the market for a new printer and I was doing a ton of research to find something perfect for what we do. I was currently working with two Noritsu printers and they were just one headache after another, not to mention the customer service and tech support was awful. Finally I decided that an Epson SureLab D3000 was the way to go. Since I've had so many issues with the Noritsu's, there was no way I was going to purchase a printer without seeing it in action. Lo and behold, Midwest Photo Exchange had one sitting right in it's showroom for me to curb my skepticism. So we gave them a call and headed down to Columbus for some much needed answers. Tim has been absolutely wonderful through everything. He made sure we had all the information before purchasing the Epson and helped with everything else after we had. He personally set up my new system and made sure it was working properly and he is always available for my continuing questions and concerns. Anything I need, he takes care of for me. Tried to buy some film from them online and had a terrible experience. 1. The shipping options for a few rolls of film ranged from over $20 up to $100. It would have cost nearly the same to ship the film as for the film itself. 2. The website was broken and I had to reload the checkout page 5+ times before it would go through to let me put in my information 3. The filtering does not work properly. I filtered for color film, and Fuji Superia Xtra was not in the results at all, but when I searched by name in the search bar, it was in stock. This was true for a number of film stocks that didn't show up in the "film" section. Needless to say, I did not go through with the order and went elsewhere. Would advise others not to waste time shopping their online store without knowing in advance that you'll be hugely ripped off on shipping. I wasted a lot of time going through all their film options before learning that during checkout and ultimately bailing. read more

My daughter had a couple of rolls of 35mm film to develop. One of them was shot in an old plastic point and click camera and I was having difficulty getting the film wound I was worried that I had gotten it stuck in the camera in my attempts to wind it. The images were precious to my daughter as she had taken them last summer on a school trip to Europe. I took the camera to Midwest Photo and Persefoni was able to easily wind the film and show me what I was doing wrong. I went a few days before Christmas Eve and had no hopes of the images getting back in time for a Christmas gift, but to my delight I had them in my inbox the very next day. My experience was so great. I wish I had gone a long time ago instead of living for months where every time my daughter mentioned the film, I got an ache in the pit of my stomach. 5 star experience and 10 stars for Persefoni who was so helpful and clearly so good at their job. read more

I stopped in the High Street location just prior to their move to Silver Drive. My friend, a professional photographer, was with me and was looking for a new camera bag. She lives out of town but is originally from Columbus and this has been one of her must visit places when she's here. We received personal attention when we inquired why a larger bag cost less than a smaller version. It was explained the larger size was discontinued. A discussion ensued on the other bags available. While I still miss the tackiness of the original high street store, you can't complain about their new location because everything is better. Located right off I-71, plenty of parking,and all the space they need inside. They carry everything a photographer needs for grandma to a professional or low end to high end. Prices are competitive with anyone online and they beat any brick and mortar store in central Ohio. They carry anything you need for lighting, film, digital, sound, and a lot for video too. If they don't have it, they'll get it. I learned a lot in the two classes i took at their original location. (lighting and photoshop.) They also bring in exports and have great seminars. They have some great sales and will match and beat prices. Their staff is extremely knowledgeable, very friendly, and customer need focused. They won't sell you something you don't need in the name of the upsell. If someone doesn't know, they will find someone that does. read more

My review is on returns. I purchased a camera that when I left the store I felt like I was pushed to buy it and it wasn't what I wanted and more than I wanted to spend. And when I got it out into the light had giant dust particles inside the lens. I was told that I had so many days to make a return- the sale wasn't final. I felt so unhappy with my purchase that later that same day I went back in for a refund. The same pushy sales man was there and told me I couldn't return it- that I had gotten what I wanted and that I needed to keep it and that the lens full of dust was no big deal. I had to fight to get my money back! Make sure you know what you want before going in- returns are a horrible hassle and they treat you like dirt. I've worked in high end retail for 12 years and if I had treated a customer the way I was treated here I would have been fired. read more

This was a rough first visit. Went in to pick up equipment that was ordered over the phone the night prior. Get there first thing, grab the gear and head to work. Simple enough. Not really. I was addressed when I walked in but that was basically it. I think I counted 7 employees and not a single one asked me if I needed help. Employee on the phone helping another customer finally asked another to help me. He couldn't find anything in the system concerning my order. After a series of back and forths between computer and stock room he came out with what we ordered, which ended up being wrong. Rather, was missing an item. Should I have known? Maybe, but I know nothing about photography. The number of boxes matched the invoice so I thought I was good. I was really hoping everything was waiting for me when I got there. Which, coincidentally, everything was waiting for me but no one apparently knew where it was or where to look. Place is a bit of a hot mess inside but they had a lot of equipment. A rep of theirs contacted us and alerted us of the mistake and brought out the part personally, which was nice. Just wish he didn't have to mess with it in this inclement weather. I will admit that I often buy my film and stuff from B&H on a regular occasion. However I have nothing but good things to say about Midwest. They have always been helpful and I have bought several DSLR bodies from them because they will often match the prices of places like B&H and Adorama. If you go and get bad service it is cause they do a lot of business and as mostly photo guru type people... they naturally aren't best at multi-tasking. I think that's part of being a creative person. Go here for your photo gear if you want good new or used stuff. IF YOU NEED PRINTING OR PROCESSING GO TO McAlister Photoworks (161 + Sawmill)... What an awesome surprise. I had fully expected to be judged and chastised - I had a reversing ring stuck on my Nikon. I am new to cold weather, from San Diego, and totally didn't get that the freezing temps had an impact. Casey and the crew all tried everything to help - and so did everyone that was there - until it finally came off. I was treated so positively-I can't thank them enough. Midwest Photo Exchange is sort of a jumbled heap of new and used camera equipment, cameras, batteries, film, everything that could ever have anything to do with cameras, and literature on cameras. It's basically a one-stop shop for camera nerds- unfortunately I'm not one, and this place is almost downright intimidating. Despite taking photography classes in high school and college, I'm nothing even like a decent photographer. I lack the eye for it- I'm a man of letters, as they say, and not a man of the less brutal arts. My main experience here was trying to sell a nice camera I had that I never used. I was refused- I couldn't quite follow the reason the old guy behind the counter was giving me, but it seemed to do with it being a film camera and not a digital camera. He suggested I take it to an old church or something in the area and try to sell it, but I was confused and dejected. I haven't returned since. Still, my girlfriend's a camera junkie and she likes this place. They do repairs, too, if I'm not mistaken, so if you really have even a modicum more photography talent or interest than me, this place is probably worth a visit. This is honestly one of the best stores I have ever been to, hands down. I am a total photography newb. I went in to buy a camera for a digital photography class- the guy who helped me was fantastic, worked within my price range, and didn't make me feel like a dum-dum for not knowing all the technicalities of the camera. He even took the time to give me some basic care tips before I left. Since then, I've gone in several more times- to get a UV filter, a camera bag, and twice because the used camera I bought was acting up. Once it turned out to be something I was doing wrong, and the second time it was the camera itself. The first time, I was impressed that they were tactful about correcting me without making me feel super dumb. The second time, I was impressed because they took the camera back and switched it out for a new one without question. They have always been really receptive about what I'm saying, and I never get the impression that they want to push me out the door and move on to someone else, which I really appreciate. So big thumbs-up to Midwest Photo. I'm sure I'll be back for yet more technical photography doo-dads in the future, and I'd recommend that everyone give this place a change, even the scared newbies like me. Also, the student discount is pretty freaking sweet. I have no idea what percent it is- seems to vary by item- but it definitely brings the prices down to a more manageable level. read more

If you're a professional or amateur photographer and need any type of photography equipment, this is your place. My wife who is an amateur photographer armed with a slick professional Canon digital camera that yours truly bought for her a few years ago for our anniversary, was chosen to shoot a friend's wedding. To do so, she needed a nicer wide angle lens. We accessed their easy to use website and reserved an $1,800 lens for the weekend for $36. I was chosen to go pick it up. Although the place is on N High St in Clintonville, it's easy in and easy out with ample parking in the alley to the side or decent size parking lot in the rear. The store was hopping, but I was immediately greeted and led to the rental counter. I waited a few minutes, but was then promptly helped. Had my credit card scanned and I was soon out the door.
