I called and made an appointment for Friday morning at 9am. I provided my insurance information and gave details of my issue. I was told I'd receive an email with pricing information. I cleared my Friday morning for the consultation. I received the aforementioned email a couple of days later, and it stated that the price of my treatment would be $1214. So I replied to the email and said that I'd like to schedule a consultation first since I didn't really know if I needed a retreatment, etc. (And the real question is how did they know what I needed if they hadn't even seen me / my x-rays??) I immediately received a call after I sent the email. The person who called said that if only wanted a consultation I would have to come in at a different time, and pay approximately $100. I had no issue paying for the consultation but was quite frustrated that they wouldn't honor my original appointment time since I'd already arranged my schedule accordingly. I asked them to make an exception. They wouldn't budge. Ultimately I went to Murray Hill Endodontists, paid much less (my portion was $205), and had a great experience overall. Dr. Small may be great but my experience with the staff and their office policies was so terrible that I'd never consider recommending this office. read more

Dr. Small was patient in clearly explaining everything to me and was attentive to my comfort during the root canal. The procedure went smoothly, and the whole staff was courteous and very covid safe. There wasn't any significant pain during the whole procedure, which seems like a minor miracle. Everyone I encountered at Midtown Endodontics provided exceptional service! The receptionist was friendly and had me checked in almost as soon as I walked through the door...Dr. Smalls was incredibly helpful and informative throughout the entire process. This being my third attempt at having this root canal completed, I was apprehensive to say the least. Nothing worse than getting settled into the process before feeling the sharp shooting pain caused by feeling the instrument against your nerve. About halfway through the process, my palms were no longer sweaty and I'd even relaxed and started watching the news. I always HATED going to the dentist. I've had some terrible experiences before when i lived upstate, and have never been able to get over it. This is hands down the best dental visits i've ever had. Dr. Small had made this visit so pleasant that i immediately messaged two of my friends who are also looking to do some root canal work right after i walked out of her office. Everyone was very professional and nice at Dr. Small's office (not to mention they are all minority women, being a minority woman myself it felt very empowering. Go girls!), and what i loved the most about this experience was that starting with booking my appointment, every step was explained to me in detail unlike most other dentists who don't really take the time to tell you much about the work they are doing on you. A cost summary was sent to me prior to my appointment, which was great, since i was always concerned about how much it would cost. The tooth i was fixing was done overseas when i was very young, with metal fillings, and a partial root canal (yes the nervs were half taken out, yikes). It has felt like a ticking time bomb for about 20 years, and i had seen 3 doctors about it, all of them told me they do not recommend performing the procedure unless it starts hurting because they just don't know what is inside those fillings right now (which made me feel like they are not confident about doing the work on this piece of tooth or they didn't want to go through the trouble of this complicated task). Doctor Small patiently answered all my questions, and explained to me the problem with my tooth, what the challenges are with it, and her strategy about fixing it, she was also honest with me with the fact that she will not know exactly how it looks inside that root until we open it up, but she promised me that she will do her best. During the session, she would pause and explain to me what she is about to do, how things are looking and if i would feel pressure, etc. All in all, it was an amazing experience, and she fixed the tooth that 3 previous doctors didn't want to work on. this 20 year old ticking time bomb in my mouth is finally resolved thanks to Doctor Small. I had possibly the easiest root canal experience you could have. Dr Small was recommended to me by my general dentist as the specialist to see for this procedure and I couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. The procedure was actually painless, which I consider a miracle. I won't be wasting my insurance money and hard-earned cash at this mockery of a service. I called prior to making an appointment to ensure that this office would take my insurance and that the cost would be the same that my insurance quoted. The secretary confirmed this, but we couldn't make an appointment with Dr. Small due to her lack of availability for a few weeks from the date I called. I called back a week later to finally make an appointment and was mocked on the phone by both receptionists for apparently falsifying details. Now the cost was suddenly twice as much as the secretary had previously stated. Instead of confessing that she had flubbed and understanding that I need surgery on a very painful tooth and cannot afford to pay twice as much as she quoted me, the secretary chose to make fun of me with the receiver uncovered. I was floored and mortified. I expect that kind of treatment from middle schoolers; not professionals. This lack of ethics and professionalism paints the entire office in a very dark shade. I cannot expect any of the service providers at this office to be of the quality dentists should be when the women who run their office have proved that their moral code is so weak as to belittle prospective clients. There are better dental providers whose staff embody the codes of empathy, privacy, and austerity. The saddest part is that now the practice loses out on all of my recommendations amongst my colleagues and my business, which alone would have awarded them a clean $5,000 plus. read more

My dentist referred me to Dr. Small because I had pain on one of my molars. I was miserable for a number of days because of the toothache. I went to Dr. Small and I had my first root canal. She took the time to explain the procedure, which put me at ease. She also gave me constant feedback and updated me on each step as she performed the root canal. Though a root canal is unnerving, Dr. Small and her staff made it as seamless and comfortable as possible. I hate going to dentists at all, and never thought I'd give one 5 stars. But today was my 2nd visit here, and honestly, I couldn't have been in better hands. My first visit, a few weeks ago, was to assess an old root canal for possible re-treatment. Dr. Small was honest...it couldn't be saved, and instead needed to be pulled. Many others would have (and 2 did...) say that it warranted re-treatment just to get the $$$, but this doctor was honest and explained everything. Fast forward to today, 3 weeks post extraction. The next tooth is bothering me, and I need another one checked out at the advice of my dentist. PLUS I am leaving for 2 months in 3 short weeks. She was honest, thorough, and talked to my dentist after hours to make a plan to complete treatment of ALL teeth in time for me to leave. The office staff reviewed all cost with me ahead of time so there were no surprises. No, my crappy UFT insurance doesn't cover everything, but I'd rather pay for good care than deal with issues down the road. She explained everything as she went, was compassionate with my anxiety induced tears, and very kind. I am having my last root canal with her in another week, and I am sure it will go smoothly. I came here before the holidays for a root canal. It was for a cavity formed underneath a filling on a molar tooth. I was so worried about the procedure and how it would affect my upcoming vacation. The receptionists plus Dr. Small were all very kind and put me at ease. Dr. Small took the time to talk before the procedure and kept me informed of her progress as she went along. Her work was excellent, I never felt any pain throughout the procedure. When I went to my dentist for the first crown visit, he remarked the work was done well though he did have to shave a bit of the tooth off to help it heal faster since it was touching my other teeth whenever I bit down. Just as an aside. Don't chew on the side with the root canal even while numb afterwards. I chewed on some soft food and after the numbing wore off, I had a lot of pain! read more

Dr Small is very efficient and professional as well as personable. She has a gentle touch and there was no discomfort during my root canal retreat. The office is very well run and I did not have to wait. I like a dentist who is confident and works quickly and who takes the time to present all possibilities and to answer questions. The office is in a great location. I received a good dental block. Relatively painless root canal. The x-rays taken at the office are placed onto the tv in front of you in the clinic room and your pathology explained to you. I like how Small asks if you want the tv or music on as she does your dental work. It makes it a much more pleasant experience. She was quick, thorough and explained every step. I'd give this place zero stars if I could! I had two root canals done by Dr. Small. It's been over a year or more since I had my root canal done. Both teeth that had root canal done still hurt as of today, I don't know what to do. I though after getting root canal done my teeth wouldn't hurt anymore but it is still as painful as it was before. This procedure was a waste of money and my time. Also the suite is very small, there is no space to move around or sit. read more

To start things off, Dr. Small was late for the appointment. She then had a friend visit her in the office and poke her head in while she was finishing up the procedure that was causing her to run behind. That was unprofessional. It was a Friday afternoon and the impression I got was that they were in a hurry to get to happy hour. In my opinion, her bedside manner wasn't very genuine and I found her to be condescending. Her use of hyperbole was also offensive, stating "cancer doesn't have any symptoms at first either." (In reference to an asymptomatic abscess) The office is small. The staff is friendly. But I won't be using her services and wouldn't recommend Dr. Small to anyone. read more

I had the unlikely event of having to have a root canal redone. Luckily my current dentist Dr. Nadia Rodriguez referred me to Dr. Small. Before making my appointment I read the Yelp reviews, which did make me a bit apprehensive. However I still went and made my appointment. The apprehension I was feeling was dismissed as soon as I arrived. Dr. Small and her assistant were extremely informative and vocal about each new step they took on the procedure I had done. They both did an excellent job and I would definitely refer her to anyone that needs endodontic work completed. One of the previous reviews did say, she puts the tools she works with on the patient's chest. She did do that but given the circumstances she made me feel very comfortable & I was okay with that. read more

I recommend Dr. Small. She started my procedure on time, kept me informed throughout the process and worked with great care. Given how invasive this procedure is, I felt in good hands, almost relaxed under her care. I still feel a little sensitivity in the tooth 3 days after the procedure, but that is normal (have had this before unfortunately). Cold, curt, and condescending. Maybe I caught her on a bad day but she was really off her game. She spoke so fast, talking at me rather than to me and at times I felt like I wanted to cry. Going to the endodontist is already a stressful experience but her bedside manner made it a nightmare. She never smiled once. She rested her examination tools on my chest and fumbled around there. I found this very disconcerting. Wasn't there a tray to hold her tools that would have been more appropriate? Despite the fact she was delivering horrible news (which was another dentist's error not her fault) she made no effort to be gentle or comforting. If you like working with a robot, she's your girl! Oh and last but not least when describing the prognosis of the proposed procedure she said verbatim, "If I do this and it fails you can't come back in two months and ask for your money back!" Umm...no that's not what you learned about rapport building in dental school. As she was taking the bib off she knocked me in my head without apologizing and that definitely sealed the deal. I would never patronize her. I'm annoyed that I wasted my time, but pleased that she revealed who she was so I didn't have to pay another lousy dentist. read more

This review comes from a strictly billing and pricing perspective. If the prices that you were quoted are okay with you than feel free to ignore this review entirely. Unfortunately I never made it past booking an appointment with this office (email sent to me several days after phone appointment, which gave me a quote of what I would pay after money from my insurance). I originally thought that the quote that they gave me via email was for the complete procedure a little over $100 (which I though was reasonable) I called to confirm and the secretary told me that price was JUST for the consultation.... So for her to just look in my mouth it would cost over $100. (my originally root canal remember cost $120 after insurance. The secretary then went on to say that if Dr. Small decided to treat the tooth I would pay and additional $1100-1200 for the re-treatment after they took $400 from my insurance. So basically she charges almost $1500-1600 to re-treat root canals..... when the average prices for NYC without insurance is $1000-1200. (yes I did all this research before even the first root canal). I couldn't help but laugh when the secretary gave me this crazy price. I asked the secretary if Dr. Smalls could waiver the consultation fee (so if by chance she is actually above and beyond all the other Endodontics in NYC, I can get a feel for her before agreeing to pay such an insane asinine price) The secretary in response said with an attitude that I should be lucky that she accepts my insurance at all! (Yess gurrlll she said that!) Let me be clear, her accepting my insurance is basically, taking the money my insurance pays out and on top of that giving me an additional crazy HIGH out of pocket bill that completely misses the point of having insurance in the first place. If she really accepted my insurance my out of pocket expenses would be much less or AT LEAST equal to the portion my insurance pays, not astronomically MORE. So no, she is doing no favors here. I would be in debt for at least 6-8 months paying for this tooth---------without any guarantee that it would work, without any guarantee that it would heal, or if it failed that she would back up her work and re-treat for FREE. I don't see anything on her website that says that she offers CT 3d scanning to find missed roots for best possible outcomes or what her success rates are, I don't see anything that says if she uses advanced technology that other Endodontics don't offer to justify these prices. She just wants to charge me something ridiculous just for the hell of it.... Somebody done lost their minds.... Several days before I got quoted here, an office that didn't take my insurance charged me $80 consultation and $200-400 re-treatment with 5 star ratings on yelp, so prices in the city overall even without insurance can be reasonable depending on the office. In the end however I went back to the Endodontist who treated the tooth in the first place. I wanted him to be accountable for his work instead of me having to foot all these different bills. Which is what I advise others in my position to do. Lots of people go to new endo's when they need re-treatments but never put accountability on those who originally treated the tooth in the first place. Every practice has insurance and these doctors are responsible to not being negligent with our teeth. If they miss canals, do things that lead to infections or extractions its considered malpractice and they have to pay for it. I'm healing right now, but decided to write this review because I was really mad at the vibe I got at this office at being a money grab. Definitely not the office for the uninsured or working class people, where root canals will cost you as much as student loans. read more

I cracked my bottom right molar (tooth # 30) on a popcorn kernel, went to my regular dentist on 6/2/2016 and she put a filling in. Less than a week later, I began to experience desperate and throbbing pain that no medication (not even Severe Orajel) could relieve. The pain progressively got worse with each passing day. So I went back to the dentist and was told that I needed a root canal. I was referred to a local endodontist that couldn't see me until the end of the month. It didn't matter that I was in desperate pain; they told me that there was nothing they could do. This was the only endodontist in my borough (Staten Island) that accepted my union's dental plan. Since I was experiencing desperate and extreme pain and was willing to do anything to relieve that pain, I decided to look beyond my borough. Since Dr Small at Midtown Endodontics (they also happened to accept my union's dental plan) got mostly good reviews, I decided to make the trip on 6/13/2016. When I first called her office to set up the appointment, I found her office staff members to be very professional as well as patient and understanding with me: an exhausted, 'in pain' person trying to negotiate with her workplace to get the appointment. I begged my job to leave a little early and frantically raced there, not wanting anything to delay me getting to my appointment. I got there with time to spare and waited in her calm office. When she got to me, she was patient and kind. She performed X-rays and showed me what was wrong and how she was going to treat it. When I asked her questions, she took the time to answer them in a clear, thorough and pleasant manner. She made sure I was comfortable and at ease and that I had a good amount of Novocaine before she performed the root canal. She did the root canal, put a temporary filling in and told me to follow up with my regular dentist to get a post and crown. After the appointment, she told me that I may experience a little pain for a few days after. She called in a prescription for Ibuprofen at my local pharmacy and an antibiotic. She also printed out aftercare instructions for me to take home. It is now over two weeks after that appointment and it is hard to believe that I was in all of that pain. Since my teeth are not the greatest, I have had root canals before and I will be needing more in the future. I will definitely be coming to see Dr Small again. I want her to be my endodontist. For other Staten Islanders out there and other folks in the outer boroughs who are in similar pain, relief is only a ferry ride and a subway ride, or an express bus ride away. The office is located on Lexington and 40th street. It is near Grand Central Terminal and not super far from Time Square. It is worth the trip! read more

Dr. Small came recommended to me by my oral surgeon. I know that root canal is not the most pleasant experience, but Dr. Small and her staff do everything in their power to make it not seem that bad.
