I've only ever had terrible experiences at this location. As someone who knows nothing technical about cars, they've been condescending and not transparent at all about what's going on. I had an alternator replaced by them and they installed one with bad bearings, so my power steering belt snapped while I was driving. Their crappy 60 day warranty didn't allow me to get ANY compensation or to put a new one in, because this incident happened just shy of 4 months after the install. I had to get it fixed by a MUCH better automotive shop (for much cheaper I might add..) The real kicker is I brought my car back to them about a week after they installed it since it was sounding funny. None of the mechanics caught that issue and just reset the computer. So unless you know cars, and can catch their inevitable mistakes, STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS LOCATION. Even if your car breaks down a mile from their shop, or in their parking lot, I'd shell out the money to tow it elsewhere because everything this Midas touches, turns to sh*t. read more

I've been taking my car to Midas Libertyville for nearly three years without issues, but after yesterday we will not be returning and will be taking our cars to trustworthy mechanics. Midas Libertyville lied about the condition of parts in my car and attempted to rip me off in addition to using incorrect fluids in my car. Back in December I had all of my fluids changed at Honda at 76k. Yesterday I took my car back to Midas for an oil change and once-over prior to going on a road trip. They called me and said my cabin filter needed replacing, my serpentine belt was cracked, dry-rotten and needed replacing, my coolant was dirty and should be flushed, and I needed a "3-Part Fuel Induction System Service". The cost of all of these services combined, not including the oil change, was nearly $400. I remembered my coolant was replaced at Honda just 1000 miles ago, so I told the guy at Midas I was going to call Honda and confirm this indeed happened and inquire about a warranty on the work. The guy at Midas assured me there was no way Honda would have a warranty on it. I told him I was going to check anyway. I called Honda and they confirmed they had changed it just 1k miles ago, but they would be happy to take a look at it since Midas claimed it was dirty and needed to be flushed. When I called Midas back the guy informed me that without authorization, they had topped off my coolant "as a courtesy" and that's something they "usually charge for". He failed to explain why if my coolant was dirty and needed to be flushed (as they had claimed), why topping it off would solve anything. We picked up my car from Midas and immediately dropped it at Honda to see if any of the other things they told me were true. They weren't. My belt was replaced two years ago and was in perfect condition. My cabin filters were clean. They checked my coolant and Midas used the wrong type of coolant, which is resulting in me having to pay $85 to flush and replace at Honda. Additionally, Midas did not reset my oil-life monitor and none of the employees were wearing masks inside the store. In total, Midas Libertyville attempted to get me to pay for about $400 worth of "repairs" that did not exist. Take your cars elsewhere if you are looking for trustworthy mechanics (if you have a Honda, I cannot recommend Pauly Honda enough). read more

Recently changed repair shops in 2021 just to test out this Midas since the repair shop I usually go to had been getting more expensive and noticed how uninformative they are. Had some major AC and brake work done here on different occasions and got amazing customer service here by Bryan. He explains everything in terms that you would understand and after seeing him engage with other customers other than myself while I was there, I noticed that he really cares about people which is hard to find these days. He stands out as someone who takes pride in his job and cares about people in general. I'll take my car to him every time and this Midas has won over my trust for all my car repair needs moving forward for as long as Bryan works there. read more

HUGE SHOUTOUT to Bobby and Byron--store manager/partial owner and shop mechanic, respectively--at the Libertyville Midas. They were both unbelievably helpful today (Dec. 13, 2018). Originally, I had an appointment scheduled at the Libertyville Amoco for this afternoon. However, Libertyville Amoco called me, diagnosed my car's mechanical issues, subsequently cancelled my appointment WHILE I WAS ON THE WAY, rudely refused to see me at all, told me to go to the Libertyville Midas, and hung up on me. I decided to take that advice, and went to Midas. I'm SO GLAD that I did. When I arrived, I explained to Bobby that I received a ticket for expired tags. Additionally, I explained that I started a new full-time job within the last month in which I drive for a living, that there's a two week in paycheck deposits, and that I cannot have this ticket on my driving record. Based on all the information I gave him, Bobby wrote up an estimate for the worst case scenario diagnostics with a total cost higher than my last paycheck. In other words, he asked me the amount I needed the estimate to be in order for the traffic court judge to fully understand that I cannot afford the repairs at this time, and then he matched it. When I decided that I should probably get a complete diagnostic test, he agreed to drop the price to something I could afford and apply the difference to a repair credit, as long I leave an excellent review somewhere and I agree to get the repairs completed at Midas at a later date. He was unbelievably respectful of my situation, and went out of his way to ensure that he and Byron met my service needs as best as they could. If you want a mechanic experience where you're treated as human being instead of money in a company's pocket, then Midas Libertyville is the place to go. After my wonderful experience today, I can say with 110% confidence, that I follow through with our agreement and will complete my repairs at this location read more

This place apparently was sold to a new owner in April. The new manager won't tell you who it is though (huh?). They also no longer honor the 5th oil change free cards that I spent 2 years earning. No apologies or concessions. Just a cold, "the new owner doesn't take those anymore". They also no longer rotate tires when changing your oil. The Mgr eventually saw I seemed unhappy and did offer me $10 off the oil change. So, that gets you an extra star. Still... Used to love and trust this place. No more. Took the manager 10 minutes to ruin someone with years of loyalty built up. Won't be back. read more

UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP. This sentence shall sum it up; it's mechanics like them that give the rest such a lousy and deceptive reputation. I took my car in for something non engine related they ended up not completely fixing the problem then they tried to up sell on other items which I declined (talk about playing you for a fool). Message to the owner: You better keep a leash on your employees and never underestimate the power of "word of mouth". You got me once but your reputation will be spreading. What actually happened was I brought my car in for a power window issue and they couldn't fix it but still charged me, fine. Then they disconnected my battery and examined my wipers and air filters and told me those needed replacing which is bologna because I had just had them replaced within the last month. As I was driving home unsatisfied my car abruptly stalls at the first stoplight, hmm... What the heck is going on? I called them and the guy said "oh sorry the car is fine and you need to tow it back to us and you will be responsible for that fee". The service tech then says, "we didn't even open you hood", oh really, I said. Then how did you know my filters needed replacing? He says, do you know how many cars I work on each day? I can't all remember that stuff. Thankfully, I had prior knowledge of an idle reset after the battery is disconnected and I was able to get it fixed at home. I will definitely not be back. read more

Had my rear brakes done here a year ago, along with a caliper service. A year later my new brakes were shot (only about 10k miles for the year). Took it in after squeaking and the smell of burning and scraping metal and was told I needed new pads, calipers, brake line, and machined rotors. Really I just replace pads and rotors less than 10k miles ago?! While I understood something was wrong and needed to be replaced I was having a hard time having that service done at the same place who did my brakes a year ago and now for some silly reason needs to be done a year later. I talked to my dad who was a certified VW mechanic years ago and he wanted to double check them before I proceeded. Turns out yes the caliper was done, pads were ground down beyond recognition and my rotor on one side was very likely not able to be machined. Dad said it was a great time to learn how to do my own brakes and understand what to look for when shops tell me bs and so I ordered the parts myself. So Father's Day weekend I learned to do brakes, discs, and calipers with my dad. Nothing wrong with the brake line as Midas had quoted me! Additionally my entire quote was $963 and doing the work myself was under $200 in parts. 4 hours in labor including a trip to the hardware store for a tool. So overall I saved $763 doing the work myself. Didn't have to pay for a part and labor of an item I didn't even need. And I spent some quality time with my dad for Father's Day weekend. I think the service here is friendly and originally it seemed like they did a great job. However, I am highly suspicious they did something to my calipers to cause further issues/business. Additionally having seen the brake line and knowing I was quoted for a replacement and it wasn't necessary is really awful. Honestly I'm tired of going into auto shops and being taken advantage of because I'm a woman. Guess that won't happen anymore since I'll be doing my own brakes from this time forward... read more

Thank you thank you thank you! Stressed free after meeting Ray! (Worth the read!) After being taken advantage of at a different car place I was ready to give up hope on finding a place that's trustworthy and reliable. Ray heard my horror stories and told me to come by Midas in Libertyville. From the moment I walked in I can tell I was in good hands. He asked me what I needed done and what my worries have been. Gave him a long list. Oil change, headlight had water inside and car being at 100,000 what do I need to keep it going. Ray then asked me to tell him about my breaks that I had gotten fixed at another shop. (I told him how I just went in for break pad change. Then came out with a car held up for over a week. Broken Emergency brake and car still not ready to drive. After having to show up to that OTHER PLACE with cops hours later I got my car back. It did not make me feel safe.) Ray and the team got right onto my car. In the waiting room he came in and told me that they would change my wheel locks out to normal nuts. Since last shop forgot to give me wheel lock back. They explained what they are used for and that I have no worries not having it on. So after getting tires off the team looked over the breaks. Ray explained to me that it looked safe and everything works. Ray talked to me about how sometimes new parts rubbing with old parts can make noise for sometime, that's probably what had me so worried. Ray assured me everything is safe that Its fully working. His team recommend that they do a tire rotation. That my car being front wheel drive that by changing them around would help for the winter. I was told come spring I should look into replacing tires. Great advice! Checking back in on me in the waiting room Ray asked if he could get me anything while we waited on my new spark plugs that was needed with car being so old and driven. Gave me a estimated time. Too my surprise( very wrapped up in my book I brought with) it's only been and hour. Wow!! They did all this in an hour. Truly a happy customer with your service. Absolutely horrible service. I scheduled an appointment for an oil change with a coupon. I told them over the phone I had a coupon, I showed up gave them my car. I come back and they tell me the coupon is not good for my car but they already did the service so I end up paying 3 times what I expected. Also, I had my car detailed the day before so it was immaculate inside. They never put papers on the floor so when they gave it back to me the drivers side was all full of dirt! These guys were a lifesaver this last weekend for me. Came out to a flat tire at Independence Grove (I live in Chicago) and needed help getting the spare on and getting back home. They were about to close but had the decency and goodness of heart to do that one last job. Last time I'm coming here. Overstaffed, poor for customer perception to see 4 guys screwing around while one person struggles to put the tires back on my car. Told them all I wanted was an oil change and 2 hours later al of my tires are off for a "routine tire rotation" which I expressed I had no time for. I could push my car to Jiffy Lube down the street faster than these guys can turn my car on. Which by the way, the mechanic was going to use pliers to start my car before I stopped him! read more

Knowing very little about cars and car maintenance, the crew here does a great job of getting the job done efficiently and explaining to me in terms that I understand how my car is doing and what needs to be done. I have never felt like I'm getting ripped off or they're trying to sell me more than I need. I have a newer car, so I haven't needed much more than an oil change, tire rotation, etc, but the service has never been less than excellent! Highly recommended to anyone! read more

Doesn't even deserve a one star! DO NOT GO TO THIS LOCATION! Absolute joke! The Midas touch .. A visual inspection of possible items that need attention. Really? ... Tell me why 1 week after I was in for an oil change.. I was at NTB getting new tires and they were the ones that told me about a valve cover gasket leak? Even though ... It's clearly visible when they insisted on putting full synthetic oil in my car ... (I requested the synthetic blend but he INSISTED on full synthetic just to get more $ outta me) that there was a bad leak? Maybe because they were too worried about trying to sell me $900 tires ... Which I ended up getting BETTER tires at NTB and BETTER service for $367. And ... The Midas in Gurnee's oil change is $25 LESS and I can only imagine their service is better. NEVER TRUST this Midas!! read more

I've been coming here for about 6 years now for oil changes and general maintenance. Ken, the owner, is very friendly and always explains in detail why your car needs the service he suggests. The other mechanics are friendly too and not pushy at all. Everything is always explained in detail. I've periodically tried other car service garages in the area but nothing compared to Midas in Libertyville. I will continue to come here for as long as I live here. read more

WARNING - there has been a change in ownership. I have been a big fan of this Midas location. The service and quality of work has always been superb but what really set them apart from the majority of auto repair shops was how honest they were. The former owner Ken always gave you the straight scoop on what absolutely needed repair and which items could be skipped or postponed. You never felt like you were being ripped off. In fact many of us in the waiting room would all compare notes and say how much we hated the dealers and the way they tried to upsell you with needless services. Well, apparently the new owner has decided to operate just like the dealers. On my most recent visit for an oil change I was presented with $800 dollars of suggested repairs where only $250 of them were really necessary. The rest was total upsell for things I didn't need nor were causing any issues with the car. Its a shame Ken retired because he certainly took a much longer term view of his customers and had quite a following. I predict this new owner will lose lots of customers quickly unless he takes a different approach. read more

I have been to many repair facilities in my life and always wondered am I getting treated fairly? Are they performing the repair that is currently needed? Will I be paying too much? I need to say that I have been more than pleased with this crew in Libertyville. They do quick work. They are very helpful and know what they are doing. I have had brake work done here on two of my vehicles and was most pleased with the outcomes. In one case they suggested a simple fix where the dealership wanted to perform an expensive rebuild. Trust is important to me when it comes to fixing your vehicle. I trust these guys. read more

I used to go for many years with all my cars, I liked the old owner because I knew he was an honest guy with integrity, it was recently bought by new owners and they made it look much nicer then it did but that's just the outside. I got an oil change and they forgot to put oil in my car. later that night my car died on the side of the road with the " low oil pressure lite coming on " while I was waiting in the cold for the tow truck in the middle of the night a very nice officer stopped by to wait with me. As we stood there I checked my oil dip stick and it was completely dry nothing in it. The tow truck guy came who owns his own garage and he checked it and it was bone dry he said accidents happen and sometimes they don't tighten down the new filter enough and the oil just leaks out I had to pay 150.00 for the tow. I told the guys at Midas the next day and they said there was oil in it but could not find a problem with my car. So basically they were full of it and didn't want to admit to their mistake which honestly if they did I would have been ok with it. Accidents happen I get that just admit to it and reimburse me for the tow. But no they rather say it was a freak mistake that my car said low oil pressure right after I got an oil change from them. They even said they had a video of the mechanic putting oil in my car but never bothered to show me. So I will be paying more money to take my car to the dealer to be checked out and if there is anything wrong with my engine. I will be having my lawyer help me get reimbursed for the tow, the original oil change, and any work that the dealer might have to preform if something is found wrong with my car. I would tell everyone to stay away from the Libertyville Midas. Its not worth the headache or expense. I would have given them less stars but yelp wont let me. read more

I had a coupon for an oil change and tire rotation. They said they could not do tire rotation because of tire wear, The car needs a special filter, which I anticipated. However they charge 30% more than an OEM part. And, when the car was returned to me the Check Engine light was on. I asked them to figure out what they did, and they said their diagnostic equipment wouldn't work on my year car. So I spent the full amount for the service, no rotation, upcharge on the filter, and they did something to cause the check engine light to come on. They also recommended additional service, but given my limited experience, I'll take it elsewhere. read more

My exhaust broke up by the engine, so I went to Midas for a quote on the repair. They told me I needed a new exhaust....from the engine back...and said it would cost over $1,400.00! They also tried to sell me new rear struts. I took my car to another mechanic who showed me that most of my exhaust is galvanized steel, and that you would never need to replace that. The actual repair (install of a flex pipe) with labor included was only $100.00.....Midas in Libertyville is the worst place I have ever taken my car....beware of these guys! read more
