With the winter slowly coming to an end, I needed to ensure that my car was back into tip top shape. My bf had recommended to me that this place did wonderful work on his car and that their customer service was top notch so on that note, I decided to check it out. Everything from when I called to make an appointment to the day that I picked up my car was fantastic. The customer service rep that I talked to, Yani and the darling tech guy who took a look at my car, Dana, had did such a wonderful job. I had initially wanted a safety inspection and diagnostic testing for my car and they were agreeable to do that. Another cool feat is that they give me a loaner car for free which is a rarity now a days especially considering the economic state we are in. It was a nice loaner too (Benz SUV) and hey! I could live like a kardashian for at least weekend! Haha! Anywho, the loaner was much appreciated. Prior to any work being done on my car, Dana called me and told me what was found upon expectation and was kind enough to explain everything including telling me how much everything would be. I truly appreciated the fact that I was not forced to do any particular service and they listened to what work I wanted to be done. Their service was prompt and the price was reasonable. Again, I highly appreciated the fact that they listened to what services I wanted at that time and didn't force anything onto me. Their invoice not only tells you how much you spent for what but also lists recommendations for services in the future depending on the nature of your car when you initially get it evaluated. Also! I won't forget how sweet Yani was when my bf and I were RIGHT ON TIME returning the loaner car to pick up my car. He wasn't upset or rushing to leave, he was courteous and kind. The same goes for Dana as well. The fact that he took the time to explain everything to me was awesome! Had a great experience with Auto Lab. Had to bring my truck in as it was in need of an oil change and was making some noise. The techs at Auto Lab informed me of everything going on each step of the way. As suspected, there were a couple of things I needed to fix. Brakes, and a trans coolant line. They explained what was going on and why they needed repairing. Everybody was friendly and helpful the whole way through. I got a loaner car for free (and it was a nice one, not some beater) and was able to pick my truck up the next day. Truck was ready same day, but was more convenient for me to get the next day, and they didn't object at all. As I was driving my undercarriage cover fell and was dragging. Just moving here, I had no idea where to take it. I called Auto-Lab and the local Ford Dealership. I'm still waiting for Ford to call back, yet Auto-Lab brought me in, looked at my car and then off I went. The best part was they could have easily said "oh, yes... you need a new cover and the labor charges.," but they were honest and said yes, a piece is missing but not enough to buy a new one. It's service like this that I find missing in so many industries but was pleasantly surprised at how fantastic my service and experience was! I would say, "Can't wait to go back!" We were selling our 2006 van and took it here at a buyer's request to check before the sale. They said brakes were to the metal, had many fluid leaks, and catalytic converter was bad, plus many more expensive problems. Driving back, the check engine light came on. Made my husband take the brakes apart to replace and lo and behold they were not worn down to the metal, not even close. The catalytic converter was replaced 5 years ago and of course nothing is leaking as we would have fluid stains all over our driveway if there was. I think they were fishing for some fraudulent repair work as they told our buyer to tell us to call them and they would review with us what was needed. Oh and by the way they took maybe 20 minutes to check the vehicle. Based on this experience, I would not trust this place at all. read more

Simple review Mounted my own winter tires and wheels - BACKWARDS! "God bless those DIY's" - Is I'm SURE what they said when I called with my problem.. "Can you put my car on the rack and flip my wheels.... at the end of the day... on a Friday..." Thanks to their "can do" attitude 15 Minutes before closing for a non-customer, they put my car up on the hoist and flipped my left/right so my snow tires were directional operating correctly. I came in for an oil change and a minor oil leak and later determined I wanted a transmission flush and brake fluid flush as advised by Sherman. I believe they found a minor leak when they were doing the transmission flush, but Kevin advised to me that he would fix it and would not charge me for it. Ok, I will admit I am a bit persnickety when it comes to my vehicles. I also will do my own maintenance on the things I can, like changing the air and cabin filters just to save a buck. Recently to take advantage of a great deal, I brought my SUV to the dealer for a simple oil change but I came away with a list of expensive maintenance recommendations. I was skeptical. For one thing, the dealer said my battery was leaking and wanted to replace it. I purchased the battery elsewhere and knew I could have it replaced at a prorated price. When I took it to where I bought it, they tested the battery and said it was good and that there was no evidence of leaks. The dealer also recommended a 4 wheel alignment not knowing I just had one done recently. I just moved to this area so I wasn't familiar with the local auto repair shops. I did some research, read a lot of reviews and decided to try Auto Lab. I stopped in and talked to Kevin and he suggested that I go over the list of dealer recommendations with Sherman. Sherman looked up his prices for each service and they were, of course, much less than the dealer's quote. I told him I suspected that some of the recommendations were not needed. Sherman said they would go over the entire vehicle but that some of the recommendations were probably based on the maintenance schedule In the service manual. He asked me if I wanted to leave the car with them overnight so it would be there in the morning and offered me a loaner. Although the dealer told me my drive belt needed to be replaced because it had many small cracks, the Auto Lab tech said it was in good condition. Also, I did not need to change the transmission fluid or coolant. I felt comfortable authorizing Auto Lab to complete the services I did need. I found their prices to be a lot lower than the dealer and a little lower than the prices I had been quoted by one of the tire franchises. What really sets Auto Lab apart in my mind is that they tell you what you need based on your vehicle's condition, they won't sell you something you don't need, their prices are fair, and they guarantee the parts and their work. Providing a loaner is icing on the cake. (My loaner was a newer Ford Edge.) When I picked up my vehicle I discovered a thank you card and a coupon for a free car wash. Nice touches. read more

Believe the hype! This place is that good! I called for my handler who was on her way to a dog show in the area from Kentucky. She was having problems with her brake box for her trailer, we believed. Kevin and Sherman took all of our worried calls professionally and patiently through out the day. They made room to get her van in that day with no notice once she arrived! They secured her vehicle inside for her so she would have no worries. They then went above and beyond and sat with her past closing time until I could get there to pick her up! They communicated with her throughout the next day on the repair and had it done for pick up the next evening! These guys are the best! I can not say enough about this place. Took my vehicle for a brake repair. I was not provided with a loaner car and wasn't even offered a shuttle to my home (within 5 miles). They did the work and left my car in their lot with the invoice under the visor. In looking at the invoice, the cost of each of the parts were more than twice what you would purchase them at a local auto parts store. I called the business and spoke to Dana, who proceeded to give me a business lesson on how overcharging for parts is necessary for the businesses' sustainability. This came complete with "if you order a steak at a restaurant, you're not going to pay what it costs getting it from the butcher." I was patient with his poor logic and then asked to speak to his employer, who he identified as Kevin. Dana told me that he would leave a message for Kevin to call me back. 3 days later, no phone call. I was told Kevin was busy and Dana would leave him another note to call me. 4 days later, no phone call. I called the business and Kevin answered. Kevin said he was aware that I had called and had been busy, and then he "forgot". Kevin told me he was aware of my issue with the cost of the parts and felt it necessary to provide me with another lecture on "industry standards" with regard to marking up the cost of parts to cover electricity for the building, employee benefits, etc, etc.. When I asked him about the cost of the parts, he said they don't "get them from the Internet" as if to imply that I'm stupid, and comparing apples to oranges. He said they get them from a warehouse in Waukegan (so, cost of parts of even less). I asked Kevin if he felt that the pricing was fair, he said "yes". Kevin then said "I'm not sure where this conversation is going, but you have a good day" and hung up. read more

I have been dealing with Kevin and Sherman for a number of years now. They are one of the few garages that I trust to service my 2000 Jetta GTS and my recently acquired Porche 944. My Jetta has 188,000 miles on the car and it is running like it was new. I expect to get at least another 100,000 miles out of the car. They are also responsible for getting the Porsche back into mechanical shape. I recently drove to Canada and back and did not have any problems. They take excellent care of their customers. Update....all of the repairs I had done at this shop turned out to be not worth the money. I had breaks done here (very expensive) and they were squeaky..I took my car to Toyota and they said that the mechanic had used very cheap parts...great. In May 2015 I had my alternator replaced as well...today I just took my car to a mechanic because it wasn't holding a charge and guess what?! The alternator they gave me is already dead... I'm glad my finance and I decided to stop coming here after his car had to be repaired for the same thing 6 times. I can't believe I wasted so much money on faulty parts. read more

I'm an active service member in the US navy and I've always done my own work on my cars or worked closely alongside my personal mechanic in California, so I was very worried sending my car to a shop for the first time because my car is the most important thing I own, however, the technicians and owner at Auto lab were very knowledgeable in their work, worked around any issue that came up, and allowed me to be very involved in the work that was being done as far as seeing what they were doing and giving my own opinion on what to do with the car. We replaced all 4 of my brake rotors and Akebono brake pads and they were able to work well within my budget even after adding new lugnuts and removing my old locking lugnuts WITHOUT THE KEY that I had lost! After I had an issue with wheel balance, they stayed late to readjust the wheels and helped me better understand the next step to making my car perfect. They have loaner vehicles and when my loaner broke down the owner personally drove 40 minutes to exchange it with a new one. This feels like a very localized and friendly service as opposed to the scripted "corporate" vibe you'd get at a franchise auto shop or oil change establishment which is a very big thing to me. Most of all the employees are clearly passionate about their work and care most about the satisfaction of their customers. Highly recommend I've been using auto Lab for about a year now from oil changes..new radiator &new tires. Great People Great work!

I'll start this review by warning anyone with a non-luxury car not to come here. I went in for an oil change around a month back and overall I would say That I was treated very poorly. The staff seemed annoyed while I was there. I had mentioned that my oil light was coming on and that I thought it might be the pressure sensor. They suggested that an oil change might do the trick and I was there for one anyway so I was on board. The oil change was quick and affordable (under $20) I think, but I wasn't told what kind of oil was used (not even on the reminder sticker). However, I was told that the sensor light was officially off (I mean, the new oil wasn't even hot yet, great observation) and that it would be fine. Awesome! I mean I know NOTHING about cars, but I was pretty sure you would need more than 30 seconds to jump to this conclusion after putting fresh oil in, but again, what do I know? In addition to the oil change (and lack of factual diagnosing for my gauge), they found several other problems with my car. I knew about some of them and a few others I didn't know about. I'll admit that while I didn't ask them for their help or opinion about these problems,I was sure glad they took the time to try and rake in some business. I knew that I was going to have to get a few things fixed already (as I previously stated), so I casually asked for an estimate for the repairs and politely waited for them to finish. They came back with an estimate around $2,000 or so. Honestly, It wasn't terribly shocking, but they presented it to me in such a manner that seemed very accusatory. "Did you try to do some work on this recently? If so, it looks like a pretty botched job and you should have come to a professional." No, actually, I have never attempted to repair something super complex on my vehicle or any anyone else's, but thank you for being so accussational. After being rang up for the oil change, I was told that I would have to sign something that said I was "denying service" for other suggested repairs. No problem, I'm sure it's a liability thing. After paying, I politely asked for a detailed estimate again and was told that my receipt would be enough. * Side note: I had explained that I needed a detailed estimate so I could try and procure the money to have it fixed, the more detailed, the more likely it would be that I could get the money, and the fatter the paycheck their shop would have for the day, seems like a no brainer right? I observed the receipt at my car and it said, "oil change.... price.." and also near the bottom "other services (DENIED): Steering knuckle (2,000 or so). The point here being that the estimate portion wasn't detailed at all, it had 2 words (and I had 7 or 8 problems that they mentioned and showed me a different estimate invoice with them in the shop), and only that I DENIED the proposal to have them fixed. Awesome. I left the shop and no more than 3 minutes later my oil light came on again. Thanks Sherman Auto Lab, it makes me feel warm and fuzzy that you didn't have any concern whether I cracked my engine or not on the way home after leaving your shop. It's worth mentioning once again that none of their estimates including fixing my oil pressure gauge (the problem I wanted and needed fixed that day). Thinking it must've been an error, I called back once I got home and left a detailed voicemail requesting the estimate again. Almost like some twisted slap in the mouth, they e-mailed me some spam mail asking me to rate my service. I sent an e-mail to them explaining that I would be happy to rate them, but that I really needed that estimate. Nothing ever transpired. They wrote me off the second I wouldn't cough up $2,000 on the spot to fix my car (it's by no means luxury) and at this point I'm willing to assume they didn't think I'd come up with the money to get such a low tier vehicle fixed in the first place. A few days later I took my car to another area shop, they instantly determined that my oil gauge needed replaced ( I knew it did even when I went to the "Auto Lab"), and fixed it within the matter of an hour (no appointment). They spent an additional 45 minutes giving it a look over and coming up with a list of problems (that were mostly the same as the Auto Labs findings), and they explained them to me in detail, they told me what was needed first and what could wait, and sent me on my way with a hard copy 3 page estimate (very detailed), and also sent an e-mail of it in .PDF format. The money was procured around a week later and that shop got ALL of my business as the same time. To re-cap, unless you live in one of the affluent areas of Lake County, and drive a luxury vehicle, avoid this place at all costs, do yourself a favor and message me for a better recommendation. I thought I needed a new transmission in my vehicle and was referred to Auto Lab by a friend. I was expecting the worst, a very expensive transmission replacement and was pleasantly surprised when the problem was corrected by replacing a couple of sensors. The customer service and communication by Sherman was outstanding. He called with updates and they finished the job when promised. Truly disappointing experience with Sherman and his crew. His mechanic attempted to figure out the electrical problem on our pickup truck and charged us on a hourly basis for his "expertise". He solves nothing and we picked up the car with the same issue with which it began. Sherman charged us regardless for that as well as the other mediocre repairs to the tune of $1800. Wasted money. We took the car to Rouse Auto and they figured out the wiring issue in 5 minutes and fixed it quickly and efficiently for $97. Autolab obviously needs some schooling for their "master" mechanic. read more
