I've been using MMP OB/GYN for several years (and through three pregnancies) and have been delighted with them. Dr. Takyi delivered my first, Dr. Herta my second, and I'm currently pregnant with No. 3. Dr. Herta is my primary OB, and I love her, but I've liked all of the OBs, NPs and the CNM that I've met there. The nurses are fantastic (one in particular always goes out of her way to aak about my kids), and the front desk staff has always been friendly and helpful. On the occasions when I've had a problem, someone has always gotten back to me right away. My current baby has given us a lot of worries, but whenever I've called in with a question or concern, they've gotten me in right away for a checkup (and ultrasound, if necessary). A good friend also went through a pregnancy with some unknowns (due to her own health issues) with Dr. Herta and was very happy with her. MMP OB/GYN is definitely known around town as one of the more natural childbirth-friendly practices. In the two deliveries I've had with them, there were minimal interventions (as per my request), and I felt like both were fantastic experiences. My only complaint about the practice is that it can be a little difficult to get in, particularly to see Dr. Herta, of you aren't pregnant or having a major problem, or if you're a new patient. read more

My husband and I made MMP our primary care provider when we first moved to Lansing, because they accepted our insurance and had a location close to our home. I really wish that we had shopped around more. We've both seen several different doctors, because it can be difficult to make an appointment with the doctor they assigned as our primary care physician. After initially seeing him for my physical, I returned two weeks later for a pap smear and he didn't remember me. With a few exceptions, the staff do not come across as friendly, and I usually feel like I'm inconveniencing them simply by being there for my appointments. When I've brought health concerns to the doctors I've seen, they have repeatedly dismissed or ignored my reports, sometimes allowing treatable conditions to worsen before they take them seriously enough to treat them. When my husband developed sciatica, he received no advice or treatment at all until his third visit to seek treatment. He was simply told to wait and see if it went away, despite the fact that it was causing him a great deal of pain. When he was finally referred to a physical therapist, his pain decreased drastically and he has been able to maintain the improvement at home. MMP has been singularly unhelpful compared to the various other doctors/facilities I've used in the past. We're moving soon, and I can't wait to shop for a doctor who'll actually be able to see me at appointments and who will actually treat me promptly if I'm sick or in pain. read more

I want to emphasize that I cannot speak to the medical side of this practice as much as feeling I got as a visiting patient. I have left the area and will give birth in another state. I felt compelled to review because I felt my experience was negative. I first met with Irene Baker. It wasn't a negative experience, but the overall mood and friendliness of staff did not rise to the level of the majority of doctors I have ever visited--I have been hospitalized for 3 weeks, visited specialists of all kinds and often the people at the front desk and the medical assistants can make a HUGE difference to an apprehensive patient like myself. Next, I met with my assigned OBGYN Nancy Herta. My husband accompanied me to two visits with her. She knew this was my first pregnancy and when I asked a question, she had a look of disbelief and made me feel a bit stupid for asking it. For instance, I would mention that I had headaches that I usually don't suffer from and she just said, "did you take something for it". I would think a doctor would ask if you had dizziness or something like that or what are you taking for it. She doesn't know that I know what to take. I believe in taking responsibility for educating yourself, but there is alot of information out there and it seems that when you mention symptoms to a doctor they should be more thorough, like my other doctors have been because they could notice something that a non-medical expert would not. She would say things like, "Baby's heart rate is 140" and that is it--not "that is good" or "looks like everything is great". I just felt that even as I expressed my fears she was oblivious and she only spoke when I asked a question and then answered it with as much brevity as possible. Next time I saw her, she was a little friendlier, but mostly sat at the desk and took notes. Not informative and didn't ask any questions. Next time I met Baker again and she actually laughed when I asked her certain things like about sleeping mostly on your left side or varicose veins. I felt as if these people forgot that some people are pregnant for the FIRST time and they should realize that nearly EVERY website on pregnancy tells women about sleeping on the left side and it isn't a crazy question. Then, I told her about my new symptoms of frequent heart palpitations and she was like, "that is normal". The sources I read said that doctors should NEVER dismiss that symptom because it is normal, but that other questions should always be asked about when, how and what other symptoms accompany these heart palpitations. Then I met with Amber McClean and I FINALLY felt that I was being connected with and listened to and if I would have stayed I would have requested to switch to her or would have found another practice. She asked questions, answered all mine and was VERY nice. I also wanted a screening done for Down's and heart problems at 13 weeks. I made an error and couldn't get in to them and when I had them ask Herta if arrangements could be made somewhere else, they said they didn't know of any place else. I was out of luck. I called around to Sparrow OBGYN and they gave me a number and this eventually led me to the Michigan State University radiology that did it for me. I was appalled that my OBGYN's competitor was more helpful of me as non-patient, than they were of their own. Like I said, I am sure they can all deliver babies, but if you want a friendlier overall staff that doesn't just treat you as another pregnant lady--look around. I am not picky when it comes to doctors, but I still feel they work for us and as long as I CAN go somewhere else I will. Found out that I was pregnant and a girlfriend of mine was pregnant as well, I was scared I had to find another doctor to guide me through my first pregnancy, I had no idea where to begin my search for a OBGYN.I went to MMP-OBGYN after a friend told me that's where she was going. I had to meet all the physicians, because you never know when you are going into labor. After meeting Dr Herta first, and Dr Mclean, although they are great doctors I wasn't completely sold on them becoming our doctor through my first pregnancy. I gained a ton of weight in my first and second trimester and I would always ask the doctors if I should be concerned about that. I had been very petite and very short, so this was all new to me. Every doctor to my comfort didn't give the response I was looking for. All they would say is you better watch out, gestational diabetes can happen when you are pregnant. I would always leave mad or upset whenever anybody would talk about the weight issue with me. Then finally I had the chance to meet DR Takyi, I was uncomfortable at first, but my husband knew after our first visit with him that he was our OBGYN. I asked DR Takyi that same question, should I be worried about gaining so much weight right away. HE blew me away with his response. He replied, " you are caring a baby and you have to account for all the blood the placenta and all the water weight you are caring too, as soon as you have this baby your body will slowly shrink to its normal size". I gained 54 pounds with my first-born. After he said that I knew he was our doctor, he always made me feel like I was the most important person in the building and that's what I was looking for. Every time I asked a question he had a great answer. My husband absolutely loved him because he always made my husband calm, even though deep down inside he was freaking out. Dr. Takyi has a very calming voice; he made you feel like anything that was going wrong was going to be ok. Not many people can do that. Then 4 months after giving birth to my daughter I became pregnant again. I was freaking out, Dr Takyi said, " this is a good thing, you are having a baby". He was my physician through my second pregnancy and that was awesome. I went into labor the day I turned 38 weeks, I immediately called the dr. office and they paged the on call doctor. Dr. Takyi called me back and I was so relieved because I was panicking and my husband was out of town. After speaking to Dr. Takyi, I called my husband and he was an hour away. When we arrived at the hospital I became aware that DR. Takyi had just got off duty and he wouldn't be there with me through this delivery. I was so scared and began to panic. After being in labor for 12 hours, I gave birth to a healthy baby boy and Dr. Mclean was there with me through my delivery. Even though I would have liked Dr. Takyi to have been there it was a wonderful experience and I am thankful for that. Now I just hope when we get pregnant again read more

I have been going to my doctor for over 35 years and he has been in the MMP group for several years. We are very happy with him and all other doctors we have been referred to. Today I had to contact an office with another problem ( transferring records) and their Human Resource Dept. was very helpful as well as the original department I spoke with. What a pleasure to have these people in their organization. read more

I unfortunately tried this practice out, due to its location being closer in the area. I have been diagnosed with Cancer and this practice has been beyond difficult, and they do not cooperate or comply with my oncologist or radiation Doctors. In the mist of all these series life changes I had a fall, they never put in a referral to a specialist and said it wasn't broken. which it most certainly was, resulting in surgery. They also never submitted any of the documentation I provided needed for my ins company so that I was dropped. all while I was going through Chemo. They are horribly understaffed and beyond rude. I hope anyone who is considering this practice values their health, because they sure do not! "makes a lot of sense for a medical practice?" The Manager is beyond rude and violates Hippa on several levels. when you need to make an appointment the receptionists will actually decide for you if they think its necessary, after at least a 45 min wait. I am currently going through legal action because of the complications they have brought to my health. I write this to bring awareness to those who need proper medical care, but talking with many of their patients who feel as I do. I am quite certain you too will find yourself here shortly. read more
