COVID Review Occasion: It's a gun store...you do the math Stopped in here today to pick up a few things. Specifically, after about 20 phone calls they were the only store that had 9M fmj range ammo in stock, albeit at a significantly higher price than usual. Supply & demand during covid... There were a few things on our list and they actually had them all in stock, which is rare for a gun store these days. A woman helped us who was very knowledgeable and helpful. Among other things, she was able to help me pick out a pair of range safety glasses that fit the pumpkin resting on my shoulders so that was exciting. Their prices were a bit above average, but they made me feel safe shopping there, had everything I needed, and provided excellent service. Those are three things I'm willing to pay somewhat of a premium for in this day and age. Their covid response game is on point - locked doors, strictly regulated capacity, wearing masks the right way, distancing, & hand sanitizer. The only potential nitpick is that the line isn't taped, but people were being respectful in line so not really a hangup for us. One last note - limit of 2 boxes of ammo per person per calibre per day, so bring all your non-gun-toting friends if they're willing. Maybe bribe them with food, because there are some awesome restaurants nearby... Would I recommend/revisit: You betcha! read more

Great stock of weapons from handguns to pocketknives. Mid America Arms is located just south of River Des Peres and only a jump away from Affton, making it easily accessible no matter which side of town your coming from. The customer service is solid; professional and efficient. Don't worry about trying to ease your way out of procedures here they check and triple check systems, quote federal laws, government regulations and store policy faster than you say "Make My Day"! I was asked 3 times in 10 minutes if I needed any help even though there were other people there. Not pushy in any way, just checking each worker checking in on me as I looked around. I ordered a gun through Mid America and was told the price which I was good with. When it finally came in the price had changed and they told me the price can change from when they originally order. Don't tell someone the price of a gun they're ordering and then change the price at time of pickup. The employee just looked at me and didn't apologize or anything. They seem to offer the best prices I've seen anywhere (probably including online) so I go back. Their personalities leave a little to be desired, they're always busy so maybe that leaves the employees a little grumpy. To be honest, some are very nice but they have a few that seem to give the traditional grumpy gun-store attitude that we don't need in the gun industry. I worked with the owner briefly and he isn't the friendliest either. However, I guess I don't need friendliness, I need good deals and they have that. They also have quite a supply of firearms, knives, and accessories. I can't imagine they don't have what you need. Ammo is cheap too. Side note, they have a big batch of local G&W Beef Jerky that makes a visit worth it. A little customer service training and I'd give them 5 stars. read more

I'm totally new to the gun culture and wanted something to protect my home in the rare case of a break in and someone endangering my newborn. I'm very busy and actually had to take my little one into the shop which I wouldn't usually do. Two points. !. I was initially received standoffish (they seemed to be confused that I would bring a baby into the shop). 2. I really wanted something that felt comfortable and reliable, but they didn't seem to like that I was comparing a couple guns side by side. At one point someone asked me what I was doing, their assistant who was helpful explained to his boss what I was doing, which seemed obvious to me (I mean isn't that the reason people go to a gun shop is to compare guns?) Mid America Arms offers a large selection of new handguns, rifles, shotguns, optics, ammunition and accessories and a few "gently owned" firearm resales. As a Federal Firearms Licensee they also serve as a receiving site for firearms ordered/purchased from vendors nationwide. Their prices are very comparable to what you'll see in other shops and their staff is knowledgeable and friendly. While they currently have no "on premises" shooting range, I hear rumor that they may be opening a range just across their parking lot "soon." I'll update if this turns out to be true. This place is great. The prices are pretty good--comparable, I found, to Cabela's. They're less expensive than the local gun ranges for just about everything, and have a selection about 5x what Cabela's has. The only thing they really lack is holster varieties, but that's because they have about three brands in every size you could want.... I'm sure they'd order anything else for you. A woman was there and greeted me and walked me through everything. She was super understanding and it was so useful to have a woman sales associate there, because we were on the same page about things, and I didn't feel at all intimated. To give you an idea of how this went and what this sales associate had to put up with, when she was explaining to me what "cleaning a gun" meant, I was like, "What kind of oil...? Mineral oil? ... A LIFETIME CUSTOMER LOST....I want to start by saying I have been a patron of mid America arms since they were located at the corner of Gravois and Tesson Ferry road in Affton. This was the store that I made my first gun purchase and I've been loyal ever since. I've purchased many guns from them and directed friends and family to do the same, however, my last few visits have been less than stellar. Your not met with a smile just a smug attitude as if YOUR BOTHERING THEM! This last experience left me speechless. I went in ready to make a purchase (small Glock) and was rudely informed that I had to purchase the gun before I could get a "feel" for it in my waistband. I TOTALLY understand safety and how they would not want everyone cramming guns in and out of their waist but I offered to be completely supervised and follow any instructions given by staff. I really just wanted to make sure it would feel right given the fact I was going with a wider carry pistol. I decided to pass on the purchase at Mid America due to their "policy" and went across the street to Southside Pawn. I was met with a smile and friendly introduction. I was allowed to "get a feel" for a few guns that day and made a purchase with them. I would recommend Mid America Arms to continue training in customer service. Many do not know exactly what they want and how it will feel in their hands or on their person so some flexibility is needed. Given your specialty in firearms, this should be something you absolutely cater to... maybe a special room or area for this purpose. read more

I took a beginner handgun class at STL SharpShooter. This place is right across the street (although they are not affiliated). The store is nice, clean, well organized, and not intimidating at all. I walked in and was greeted by an employee immediately. I probably had noobie written across my forehead because the associate that I was working with (Don) spent about 30 minutes with me, walking me through all the different 9mm options. He clearly went over the benefits of each different model. While I didn't buy a gun that day, I left with a clear understanding of my top options, and will most likely return for purchase. read more

So the next day I bought it back and with a friendly smile took it back in there shop and took the gun apart replaced the parts that were broken and made sure i was satisfied. I stopped in to look at pocket knives with assist (switch-blades) which are recently legal in Missouri. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Interestingly, while at the checkout counter the guy next to me says "you can get that on Amazon for less". So, when I got home I checked. Not true. Amazon doesn't carry this style, which is not legal in many states and the lowest price I could find on the internet was higher than Mid-America. Bottom-line: Good service. Low price. read more

Their prices are very competitive, they have an excellent selection in stock and a knowledgeable staff. Al, in particular, is great with various modifications, troubleshooting and accessories. They are very helpful if you need a unique or hard to find item. They are the only shop I use and refer people to. What separates Mid America Arms from the competition is the quality of customer service. Ownership and staff are knowledgeable, well informed, and willing to have solid discussions about choosing or upgrading firearms and accessories. There are never efforts to "upsell" you and they are objective in discussions-unless you ask for an opinion about "what's the best....". A recent example: I had lost the small Allen wrench to adjust the Crimson Trace laser when I was going to replace the battery. When I went in, Audrey said she'd be glad to help if I'd just provide the battery as they had none in stock. I went to get a card of batteries and returned to talk with Audrey. In 5 minutes, she was back with my pistol-with the battery installed and having been perfectly sighted in for 7 yards. Great Service-thank you Audrey!!! Mid America is a top-notch facility for gun enthusiasts as well as novices interested in learning about firearms. The inventory is broad and covers almost all major manufacturers and price points. There is a large supply of accessories on site and you can almost always find whatever you are looking for. The team also readily facilitates acquiring items not in stock and transfers (although I have not used these services). After 20 minutes of waiting for anyone who worked there to at least make some sort of eye contact with me, I went up to the counter and waited another 5 or so minutes. The manager is a rude, and ill-mannered individual who doesn't hold himself to any type of standard in customer service. I wanted to purchase a hard to find gun and found one from an online retailer for about $600. I called up MAA looking to do an FFL transfer and the manager stated that they could get me the same gun for $850. I told him that it's $250 dollars more than the one I found, and that's when he lost it. The manager then proceeded to chew me out about how he has a business to run, etc and then finally hung up on me. I called around and spoke to an "ultimate" place who had no problem doing an FFL and they also had the gun for sale at around the same price as MAA. Needless to say, Mid America Arms lost my business for good, which is funny because I ended up not even buying that gun and getting something else instead. read more

They were very helpful, they didn't get tired of my questions, I felt respected and like my business mattered to them. Totally the reverse of Denny Dennis. Prices are better than average. It's a gun shop, not exactly a place to hang out and talk about guns. I have yet to have a bad experience in this shop. You want to hang out and talk about guns wait until the new range across the street opens. Ranges are better for learning hands on, a gun shop is for buying guns. People do such little research on firearms and then show up and expect everyone in a shop to know everything about a particular gun. There are basics to every firearm, if you never fired a firearm and are looking to buy, find a range, rent some guns and fire them. Anyone will sell you a gun, know what you want BEFORE you walk into any gun store. Want to use the bathroom? QT is down the road. There is a reason there is no public bathrooms, at most gun stores it is the same idea. SAFETY! I DO NOT work at a gun shop but I am a courteous buyer. I am respected when I come into the store because I know what I want and what I am looking for in a firearm. I am thanked from no less than 2 people when I walk out of the door and no I don't buy every time I walk in the door. But I also don't ask inane pointless questions that could have been easily looked up on-line before walking in the door or using my own eyes. Point, a gun shop is where you buy firearms, ammo and accessories. You want to be fawned over go to a boutique shop, you want good service and knowledgeable staff about the firearms go to Mid America Arms. Yes real people work here, yes real people have feelings, yes real people have bad days, so cut some friggin slack on these guys. They usually have what I want or need, their prices are competitive and they don't gouge their customers. They are very fair and are informative if you ask the right questions, if you are a first timer in a gun shop learn the lingo by reading some reviews of firearms on-line. Don't go in cold, visit a range first, then go to buy a firearm. Ask if you don't see and don't be pissed because they don't have exactly what you are looking for, firearms are tough to come by these days, ammo too. This is pretty common with all the purchases I've made at mid america, went in to browse over the weekend but ended up buying a great smith & wesson mp shield. The sales staff is knowledgeable and can tell you everything you need to know about firearms (there are no stupid questions when it comes to guns). Also has the gun shop vibe where you can enjoy other people fond of the 2nd amendment and at the same time not be intimated by being a "newb". Great store with a friendly and informative staff. Still sell firearms for what they're worth no price gouging. Reasonable and affordable prices in today's market. Was able to browse at my leisure and Ronald was very helpful in guiding me through my purchase. He gave good advice in a professional manner and allowed me to ask the questions needed. Staff is always ready to help whenever I go in. Usually busy on the weekends but if you wait your turn patiently you'll get waited on swiftly and respectfully. They have a lot of accessories that other stores don't carry and if not are more than happy to order it up for you. Will definitely put more dollars into this establishment. read more

What a terrible experience. I called earlier in the week about their stock of a particular handgun. The man on the phone stated that a new shipment of 2 of the firearms were going to be in either on Wednesday or Thursday of this week. This afternoon, I called and spoke to a woman who informed me that 2 of the firearms were delivered today and informed me of the price. After my daughter woke up from her nap, I drove to the other side of town to purchase the firearm. I asked one of the employees about the gun and he instructed me that the guns were never delivered. When I questioned why the information was given to me by 2 separate people, his only comment was "what do you want me to do about it." He checked "in back" and said he didn't know when a new shipment would arrive and said "it could be months..." The manager was even less sympathetic to my plight as he simply replied "it happens" and that he has "no clue when another shipment will come." I will never use this store again, their incompetence wasted my time, gas and effort. From now on, gunbroker is where I will buy my guns...if I would have done that the first time I could have saved the money I burned in my fuel tank for the shipping costs. read more

This shop is following an annoying trend in city gun stores: The lack of care about customer service. They have so many customers they don't mind ignoring a few people. I went in recently to purchase a Mossberg 500 shotgun at the end of the day. I knew exactly what I wanted, and had my money in hand. So I waited for a store representative. And I waited. And waited. After half an hour of seeing the employees standing around doing nothing but talking with each other, I decided to see if one of them would help me. All I got was a glare in return, like I was some sort of criminal who doesn't belong. If I had wanted to get treated like dirt, I would have gone to a pawn shop, and probably gotten better prices too. Congratulations Mid America Arms, you are one of the worst gun stores I have ever been in. I literally walked in with money to give to you, and you managed to goof that up. Well done. read more
