Buyers remorse. This is a great range, but I had a really poor purchase experience there. I bought a new gun there and later found that it was jamming about 5% of the time. I brought it back in, and the guy at the counter tested the gun and said I need to be using 147 grain ammo. He said the problem was that I was using 115 and 124 grain ammo before. The first sales person didn't say anything about that, and I actually had purchased a 1000 round case of 115 grain ammo. I think there's something wrong with the gun because I did an Internet search and it said this gun has no problem with 115 grain ammo. I'm pretty sure there is something wrong with the gun and I have to use a hotter ammo to solve the malfunction. The original sales rep said if I have any problem with it just to bring it in and made it sound like they would take care of me. But the second guy who is extremely well spoken had me half convinced I need to use (more expensive) hotter ammo. I'm certain there's something wrong with the gun and now I have to call the manufacturer and deal with them. Update 6/27/25 (two months later): Shortly after my Google review was published, James, one of the managers reaches out to me. He apologizes about the employee that said I needed hotter ammo - he shouldn't have said that. He encourages me to bring the gun in and they take a look at it. Several of them shoot it, it works fine, but it jammed once while I was shooting it with them. They blame it on my grip; my grip is not tight enough so the slide can't operate properly. I'm thinking that can't be right -- I've worked with an instructor, a former professional competition shooter, and he taught me a proper two-handed thumbs-forward grip. I've shot all the major brand handguns, including high-end race guns like Staccatos, and I have never had a problem with jams. I insist my grip, while not pro-grade like these guys, is not the problem. I tell them I want to return the gun. I'm offered a meager trade-in, good for another gun or store credit. I expected they'd stand behind the product, as an authorized reseller for Canik, that they'd take it up with Canik, but they 'stuck to their guns' that the gun was fine, and they could not improve upon their offer. I decline their offer and say I'll send it to Canik. At this point, as if I had some really original idea to do so, THEY offer to send to Canik. Canik, who has a location in the US, still took the better part of two months to send it back to me (it felt like it was being sent off to Europe or something). Canik replaced the slide spring. I get it back, test it, it works fine. But by this time, I've lost my taste for Canik and this whole experience, so I want to trade it in, and get a gun that I've owned before and trust, a Smith & Wesson. I asked my point of contact there, Tyler, what it would cost after the trade-in and adding a red dot. I never did get a reply. I emailed Tyler and James a couple times, called a couple times, can't reach anyone. Ghosted. I feel that the way this should have gone down was that as soon as I had a claim the gun (under warranty), was defective, and if they were not able to fix it, that they should have offered to send it to the factory for repair. Rather than inconvenience and embarrass me, with claims I needed different ammo, or had a bad grip, they should have stood behind what they sold, and offered to get it resolved via the manufacturer. I will probably continue to tell people that The Range West is a top-notch gun range, but I would not recommend purchasing a gun there, as they don't seem to want to stand behind what they sell. read more

Instructors were knowledgeable and thorough for my CCW class but their presentation and demeanor was very cavalier around taking a life, justifiably or not. I felt the whole presentation encouraged the use of lethal force and didn't caution the attendees enough about the consequences of the wrongful use of it. Don't get me wrong, I am going to conceal carry but I'm not excited about the prospect of having to end anyone's life, even "a bad guy's". The examples they used to buttress their trigger-happy reasoning was based on a few stories that don't reflect a reasonable likelihood (a criminal returning to kill all witnesses, a grocery store robbery where the gunman had an "inside" accomplice). Those are great for Hollywood but happen EXTREMELY rarely in real life. Should you be aware of the possibility? Yes. Should you base your lethal actions on the chance they are happening to you? Ok- if you know me, you know that I have zero gun experience. I attended a Girls Just Wanna Have Guns class here and I felt safe and comfortable. I appreciate the instructors taking the time to teach gun safety and proper handling. I was able to practice virtually before I even touched a live round and I had someone near me helping the entire time. This business let me tell you is awesome. I am a member and I go in to shoot 2-3 times per week. Every time I go in the entire staff is amazing. The store is always clean and organized making shopping easy. I went in to purchase a firearm that I saw on line but couldn't get my member discount to apply. So once in the store James was the first person to assist me. He made sure I was able to find exactly what I wanted and get my discount. Went there with my daughter to buy a semi auto hand gun. She's a lefty which really limits the choices. After getting a look at what's available from the sales guys upstairs, we proceeded downstairs to rent the candidates so she could choose. We literally couldn't get the range attendant to help us. I have subsequently taken the armorer's two day course. Excellent course and highly recommended for AR15 owners! Now I want to take the Carbine courses. Additionally, I have participated in Guys and Guns nights. Lots of fun! You have the opportunity to shoot weapons you might not otherwise. I have been to three of these and thoroughly enjoyed each one. Prizes go to winners at the end and food and drinks are served. It's a good way to meet and socialize with other gun owners. I've been waiting for The Range to open up for a long time. It didn't disappoint me. Nice shop with an excellent selection of rifles, pistols and shotguns. There are all sorts of accessories and clothing. A simulator is available for rental with various training videos. Training is available. The firing lanes are downstairs where you can also re t guns and purchase ammo and targets. A 1 year individual membership is $250. Or you can pay as you go very nice facility. read more

I went to The Range yesterday to purchase a strap and foregrip for my AR-15. I have been to The Range many times before and have a membership with them. My experiences there have been quite good, and today's visit was especially helpful. The salesman not only helped me with the selection of the strap and foregrip, but he also instructed me on the pros and cons of the different attachment options from their stock of merchandise. After all the items were selected, he installed the necessary attachments, adjusted my muzzle brake (all without additional charges) and gave me advice on how I might improve my red dot performance. He then adjusted the strap to fit me and showed me how to adjust it in the field. All the items I purchased were of good quality but the pointers he gave me were worth even more. read more

I thought it was impossible to come close to Sharpshooter's in Affton, but the Range in Ballwin, proved me wrong. First, the wait time to get a bay was quick. There were 2 people ahead me and the 1 clerk just checked us in rapid time, while even answering questions. You don't have to buy their targets and ammo; unless you are renting a firearm (which is standard at most gun ranges) The staff is cool and asked me if I wanted to take part in a competition, which I gladly accepted. You can shoot all day for the same rate you pay for 1 hour at some ranges. (If you go when its very crowded you may have to take turns to let someone else use the bay but you still aren't on a time limit.) Now on to the bays: Well lite and if I'm not mistaken there is a knob on the side of each bay to adjust the lighting in your lane. There are printed instructions posted inside each bay on how to work the control panel to move the target down the firing lane. The only thing I couldn't get use to was when you're in your firing position in the bay, you aren't on solid ground. You are on a metal grid like the ones downtown that release stream( this is to make catching the shell casting easier). However, the Range's bays have to be the widest in St Louis. I've gone shooting in at least five ranges and this is by far the best one. There's a beautiful lounge area on the main level along with a spacious retail area. Beware, when you go downstairs to the shooting lanes, it's chilly however the ventilation is especially good. A lot of thought went it to operations including the grates you stand on to catch the spent shells, and hands-free powered washing stations conveniently located before you go back upstairs. read more

I usually go to sharpshooter on gravois but my buddies wanted to try this range because it was new. We checked in and my buddy who needed a box of 9s asked for a box. The guy pulled one off the shelf. As this was happening my other buddy tells him don't worry about it because he brought plenty of 9. So we return the box to him and tell him we don't need it. Of course we finish up shooting and we go outside to the check in area to check out and the guy rings us up. Of course the guy didn't take the 9s off the Lane. Now there's a different cashier and we explain the situation. Of course. We're liars..... he's thinking. He doesn't even start to give us the benefit of the doubt. Last time I ever spend money at this place. I didn't make too big of a fit. I just thought it was inconsiderate of them. I told my buddies we go ahead and split the lane with the 9s on it. We paid it. And NO... we didn't take the 9s! Waste of my money. We drove out of our way to try this "nice new range" yeah right. YMMV of course.... Sharpshooter on gravois from now on.... closer and been there several times with no issue. A first time experience like that is one that will leave you with a bad taste... trust me... none of my buddies will get a good recommendation of this place. read more

Everything was great until my daughter and I went to the counter to check in for the shooting range downstairs and receive our lane assignment. The female employee with the pinkish hair and facial piercing had some sort of bad attitude with us for an unknown reason. I was going to let it go until my daughter mentioned it that evening how the worker spoke to me like I was stupid and was really rude. For someone who knew next to nothing about guns outside of don't point them willy nilly and you know, they're dangerous, they were all super helpful with none of the cliche judgmental looks you've heard about at other places. I have 20 years in uniform between the Marines, Army and 8 years as a policeman in a major metro department. I was talked to like a child by one of the younger staff members. These places should encourage a friendly and helpful attitude, not a smug and condescending one towards new users of firearms and experienced users. They give of a sense of "better than you" bs. By far the best indoor range in the area IMO. Very fair priced even without a membership, you can bring in your own ammo (no steel or green tips) comfortable climate controlled ranges with a top notch filtration system. A digital keypad lets you set specific and repeatable distances if your into that kind of thing. A large supply of gear and gun goodies with very helpful crew of experienced people. Nice range! Brass shells are easy to sweep into the grates. Large showroom with a lot of guns and merchandise for sale. But best of all... IT IS AIR CONDITIONED. AC is important inside the range area as things get hot and sweaty! Very comfortable environment to shoot in. read more

I took their CCW certification class with instructor Phill Balasmo. I learned so much about guns, gun safety, laws surrounding guns and the usage of them, and of course how to use one. Phil is a phenomenal instructor! He made the class fun and exciting. I was actually nervous about going into the class since I'm a young female (assuming I would be treated as a feeble little girl), but Phil actually made me very comfortable and very empowered as women to take care of my own. He has a ridiculous amount of experience and I highly recommend taking the class with him. The rest of the staff here are amazing as well! They know what they're talking about and are very helpful. I'm still clueless on certain aspects of guns, but they are amazing about being straight forward, informative, and not making me feel like a complete idiot for asking obvious questions. I definitely recommend coming to The Range for shooting and to take any/all of their classes. read more

Fiveteen minutes after the opening time, someone came sauntering along whom I suppose was the proprietor. He passed us without any acknowledgment or apology as he walked to the rear of the building.
