Customer service is alive and thriving at Micro Plant Studio at 365 West Broadway, Boston, MA 02127. I received a floral gift on Friday, February 13th. I was disappointed in the quality of the arrangement. The gift was delivered through Door Dash. Being Valentine's Day weekend, I knew that the shop would be busy. I waited until Monday afternoon to reach out to Micro Plant to let them know that the flowers were less than the quality I knew they were known for. Within 30 minutes of my reaching out, the owner, Julio contacted me. He assured me that quality is paramount to him. I was not asking for anything. I just wanted to let him know that between his shop and my house, something happened to my gift. He apologized profusely and wanted to make it right. A little after 7 this morning, Julio was at my front door with a gorgeous rose arrangement and an apology. I was surprised to say the least. Julio takes amazing pride in his work and it shows. By the way, I do not live in the city and his kind gesture meant a drive on the expressway during rush hour. I whole heartedly recommend Micro Plant Studios for your floral and unique gift needs. This store is fantastic! Really beautiful selection of small houseplants in the store, conveniently located in South Boston. Julio, the store owner, is fantastic. I had come in with a very specific request of small Venus fly traps. Within moments he had them shipped over from his warehouse to the store and a few days later he personally texted me and told me when they were available for purchase in the store. I ended up getting a beautiful plant for $25 that now munches on the fruit flies in my kitchen. The store staff is extremely knowledgeable about plants and how to care for them. I have a large, adult rubber plant that needed to be transplanted, definitely outside my skill set bc of the size, and I had a few general questions for Julio. After some initial confusion bc his emails were going to my spam folder - my fault for not looking! - we arranged an early morning appt. He had described a watering method that I was not familiar with; I know about watering from the bottom, but this involved enclosing the entire plant with all the dirt (now in a larger pot) into a big trash type bag, sort of enclosing it. The sticks that he gave me to test the moisture level and when it needs to be watered made little holes in the bag as I pushed them down - this is what I'm assuming happened - because pretty much right away when I watered the plant, the excess water came out the holes in the bag into the saucer of the pot, which I then suction out with a turkey baster so the plant isn't sitting in water. So basically, the big bag developed holes, making it useless. I mean, I water it now pretty much like a normal watering - water on the top, get rid of excess water. Seems to be doing great so far! But the communication from Julio could've been better, I thought. He's an outstanding, intelligent all around great guy - and I can't wait to see the new place! - but I think he needs to be clearer. If it was important not to insert the stick all the way to the very bottom (therefore making holes in the bag) that should've been made clear. I guess it's self-evident, perhaps, but not to this novice of Julio's watering method. Unfortunately, I sent him a plethora of texts, clarifying things, with the last one showing how I truly didn't understand his method (water when tip of stick is slightly moist and the rest dry, or vice versa? Both made sense to me!) Some people, including myself, have a hard time with logic and strategy, even in plants. I know words and that's my thing. For $280, I want to be sure about everything. Fortunately, my plant seems to be doing fine, sprouting new leaves, I use the sticks religiously, and am happy! read more

It's a great place to go with children. I took the cubs scouts from Troop 41 and their parents to learn about suculents. Julio was friendly and educational throughout the workshop! The kids enjoyed looking around, touching the plants, and playing cognitive games. His background in art and education also helped the children plant and paint their pots without judgement. I took my kids recently this summer without announcing a visit and Julio welcomed them with a smile. The kids were able to roam around the shop freely and shop for cute little critters, little people, and other items. Happy to go into a kid friendly environment. read more

I've passed by this business many times, and decided to call to see if they had a plant that I was looking for. When I phoned with my inquiry, the owner seemed harried and asked me to text him as he was "very busy." (It's Saturday, I'm sure he was.) I explained that I had a number of questions and would prefer to communicate them verbally through a phone call rather than send text messages. Texts can become cumbersome and time-consuming if one party is distracted which, clearly, he was. After a little back and forth on this point and my suggestion that he reach out when he had time, he said he would call me. I received his call-back shortly after we hung up. On the second call, we discussed my questions including plant color, size, pricing, et cetera, and at the end I asked for photos of the plant. (He had suggested doing this on the first call.) At that point, instead of continuing to help me discover if this was the right item for me and secure some business, he passively-aggressively commented, "I thought you could not receive text messages." I re-explained my preference to discuss things over the phone to which he then began justifying his request to text by saying it was his protocol or business practice to communicate that way. This struck me as unusual, frantic, but mostly arrogant, as if he were saying "I'm too busy to bother speaking on the phone to my customers about my products, so request to text. Deal with it." At this point, I was frustrated with his poor customer service capabilities and explained that I was happy to look elsewhere for this product, if my business was too disruptive. Rather than address my concern and salvage a quickly floundering sale, he replied by saying that I was welcome to shop elsewhere if I "felt more comfortable" doing so. I'm not sure what he meant by this left-field comment, but it supported his passive-aggressive tendency for dealing with a formidable customer. I said it wasn't to do with comfortability, but rather that my potential business didn't seem to persuade him to be as helpful as one might expect from a place that relies on local and, likely, new customers. He repeated something about my comfort of a visit to his boutique to which I decided to simply reply "okay." I had had and heard enough. He again offered to send photos to which I also said "okay." At this point we ended the call. I have worked in customer service roles, and understand that when it is busy you need to make quick decisions with efficiency in mind; there are many customers, just like me, who want help. However, you should also listen and accommodate, if possible, rather than instruct and be inflexible, especially in a rude manner. Directing me to another method of communication after he answered his phone and my explanation for my preference was dismissive. Passive-aggressively questioning my capabilities to communicate is unprofessional. Assuming that my reason for wanting to take my business elsewhere has to do with my comfort rather than his inability to offer quality customer service for his premium products is a cop out and not intelligent. This was a terrible first experience, and, sadly, the last I will have with Micro Plant Studio. read more
