The glass on my MacBook Pro cracked, and Mick's Macs was the only place in Santa Barbara that offered replacing the glass by itself, which would cost a fraction of what I would pay to replace the entire display. This is great! Here's where it went downhill for me: I appreciate being spoken to like an adult, and Mick spoke to me in what felt like a weird tone combining condescension and honest-to-goodness baby talk. Saying, "don't worry we'll take care of it" is generally appreciated, but not when it's the answer to "so is there a chance this might hurt the actual display?" Strike one. But maybe I'm overreacting. Honestly, this alone would've been fine but as they say in late-night infomercials: wait... there's more! The laptop was a work machine, and this was very clearly expressed before handing it off for repair. Any guesses if the work was completed on time? If you wagered that it was completed 2 days late -- you've won. So, strike 2. But here's where the service truly fell apart: when I got the laptop back it was filled with software I never requested nor discussed installing! Seriously? And I may have been less offended if this software was credible and open-source. But, instead, I was unnerved to see that these were some obscure, terribly-supported software packages, some of which were under adware and trial licenses. I suppose it's my fault for trusting a repair shop with my password. Nevertheless, strike 3. Now to be fair the glass was replaced as promised, albeit the workmanship was far from perfect (there were visible marks of glue setting incorrectly around the glass). But I realize hot glue is messy and I was never expecting a perfect replacement for the price of this repair, and this is why I went with 3 stars instead of just 1. In conclusion, I understand that plenty of people find this repair shop helpful. I, on the other hand, found the service to be condescending and the workmanship just around good enough. It's fair to say that I am never using their services again, and I would not dream of recommending the shop to anyone else. And now you know. --- Note: This review was for work done in 2012. Back when cars were more machine than computer, it was so comforting to have a trusted mechanic who you knew would give you great service, and not gouge you or try to upsell you. It is ironic then, when our devices are ALL computer, to find an Apple expert who doesn't masquerade as a "genius" behind a bar, but is willing to come to your home or office, or welcome you into his home office to give you great service. I had a five year old (ancient) powerbook that Mick turned into a new computer with all the whizbang features of the latest and greatest. And, he did it affordably, with a smile, and with an obsession for good and responsive service. So drive past that boxy store with the pimply faced "geniuses," to Mick's. My computer crashed late last week. As a grad student going into finals week, this was the worst thing that could possibly happen to me. In addition to being without a working computer, I hadn't backed up in months (foolish, I know). I called Apple, who told me that it sounded like my hard drive was dismounted. While trying to find a reasonably priced repair place, I found Mick's Macs and gave them a call (Friday). Because I couldn't bring my computer in that day, I arranged to bring it in first thing Monday morning. Later that day, Mick called me just to reassure me that they would likely be able to retrieve my data. Unlike both Apple employees I spoke with, he didn't lecture me that I really should have backed my computer up, which was much appreciated. I brought my computer in first thing Monday morning and received a call ten minutes after leaving to tell me that my hard drive was fine, but that a cable connecting it to the motherboard needed to be replaced. Mishan (store manager) called me several times throughout the day to keep me updated on the progress and I was able to pick it up the next morning. Mick had all the answers, was efficient, affordable and quick. He had my older G4 all spiffed up and ready to fly in one day. I have used two other SB MAC places, both with dismal results. So although we live in Ellwood we happily travel to the Mesa for Mick. Thanks Mick for doing a great job. BTW I took the time to sign up to be a yelper so I could write this review. As one who relies on Yelp I feel I should contribute and as far as Micks Macs goes it is so important to have a good, reliable and honest "computer guy". Our helpful friends never really seem to be able to help and a pro is often times the best choice. Mick is a pro and although he wont do it for free, like a friend, he is well worth the cost. My G4 has not run this well for quite sometime. And he is a no BS guy. He wont try to make you believe your machine is not worth fixing....unless it isn't. No hard "up sell" and when he suggests you upgrade something he is not trying to just sell you something. His upgrades made my Powerbook seem brand new. He also will respond to follow up questions for us non computer folks and not blow you off. Stick to professionals for computer repair and upgrades and forget the CL knuckleheads who do more harm then good most of the time. Mick is a serious professional. read more

I'm a veteran computer nerd and have been on Mac's since the first one in '84. So when I call for help, it's a serious problem. I recently had a network issue throughout a complex home/office setting that was beyond what I wanted to handle. Mick's came out quickly and brought my network into shape - even beyond what I had envisioned. Their team is professional and super nice. I'd had someone from Mac Mechanic come out to try to bring the network up to this standard a few years before, and had been really disappointed. So it was doubly satisfying to find the job done so well by Mick's guys. (esp. Mishan in this case). Last year they also rebuild a Mac Pro tower for me that I run in PC mode and delivered it as well. CAVEAT EMPTOR I have never written a review online but I thought it was important to warn anyone who was considering working with this company. I own a lot of Apple products and I wanted to try a new service provider; I met both the owner and his employee and I gave them several computers to fix. I was let down by Mick's Macs on several fronts: 1. POOR VALUE 2. POOR CLIENT SERVICE 3. LACK OF PROFESSIONALISM Read further for details: 1. POOR VALUE I brought several high end computers for Mick's Mac to fix. They convinced me to upgrade a number of computers and I spent several hundreds of dollars on their recommendations. Later I checked on the upgrades and it turns out that they overcharged me. 2. POOR CLIENT SERVICE I asked Mick's Macs to give me a deal on reviewing the other technologies I brought to them based on the fact that I brought them so much work already and they refused. I then asked Mick's Macs to look up a large quantity of other parts for other products I had that needed repair and I was told that they would charge me 400% more than what I found online myself. I purchased the parts myself and asked Mick's Macs to install them and they refused. 3. LACK OF PROFESSIONALISM Mick's Macs work out of a room in the owner's home and schedule clients to come to them. The company scheduled a time for me arrive but no one was there. Later I got a call from them and they were not apologetic for their tardiness even though I moved my schedule to accommodate them. Condescending even in your video....after 4 years...."relax we got this". Every bad review you have solidifies the fact that your customer interaction is poor. I though about bringing in another video and this just shut me down reminding me about the last interaction which was and always will be the last time I ever bring anything to your shop. Unfortunately, I had a very bad experience when repair and upgrade work was done. I was charged $400 for a replacement HD, that was available on Amazon for $200, and it was not as highly rated as the higher priced HDs. Within a few hours of use, the screen went grey on the right side. I was informed that I had to pay to love the problem. Another repair shop found the LED lights were not properly reinstalled By Mick. I cannot recommend them! read more

Everything that could be wrong with my 2010 Mac was wrong. The battery was dead, the hard drive was very broken, the software needed to be reinstalled, and my user account was extremely corrupt. I'm about a year and a half late in writing this, but I'm doing so now because I just got my defunct Macbook Pro back in pristine condition! From.....someone else. Back then, I had taken my laptop to Mick's Macs based on reviews and online searches, and thought if anyone could help, it would be this place. My problem was the battery would no longer charge; I'd plug it in, and nothing. So after a few months of frustration at not getting it to work, I dropped it off at Mick's. A few days later, I went in to pick it up. Not only was I insulted ("your laptop was full of disgusting dust and cat hair") (seriously?!?) but he told me it was a lost cause and they couldn't fix it, and charged me a few hundred dollars. Ok, fine, I thought, I'll just consider it a paperweight and buy a new $$$$ laptop, which I did. Fast-forward until now, and having moved to a new location where a more accessible Apple store was found, my mother convinced me to just have them take a look at it. I took it in, and within a few minutes they had it fixed, free of charge. Seriously? I am giving Mick's Macs 2 stars instead of 1, giving them the benefit of the doubt that maybe something they did made things easier to fix, but if that was the case, they should have fixed it themselves. read more

My iPhone smashed on some rocks when I fell hiking. I brought it to Mick's Macs for repair. Besides the broken glass, the charging port stopped syncing or charging. The staff at Mick's gave it their best. Then, at no charge to me, took the phone to two other shops, including the Apple store. No one knew how to fix it. They returned my phone and apologized that they couldn't help. I've never been to a shop going to these lengths to help a customer. I highly recommend Mick's Macs. read more

I recently got my iMac in such a state that I was unable to install the latest OS upgrade. Parallels would not work either. I called Mick and left a message; I got a call call back within an hour. I found Mick and his co-worker, Eddy, to be well versed with the Mac and with parallels. They did an excellent job getting everything to work properly. Their rate was fair, so have no complaints there. So if you want excellent Mac service from two professionals, I'd recommend them highly. They take their work seriously. Hired Mick's to help figure out why my wireless network at home was slow and was dropping the signal frequently. The technician was polite, knowledgeable and he diagnosed the problem as quickly as possible. Worth every penny, since I never would have been able to fix this myself. I consider myself a Mac expert. I have been a fan since my first Mac (a Mac Plus in 1986!) I bought the ORIGINAL iPhone (for $600!). Mick took apart the machine, cleaned it completely, and installed a new hard drive with twice the storage capacity all for around $600--easily less than half of what they would have charged me at Apple. I sent my decrepit but beloved Powerbook G5 cross-country to Mick's Macs after a friend recommended his service. Mick rescued me with a new hard drive and ported my apps for me. When the G5 no longer met my needs, Mick convinced me it was time to . . . well . . . just say a fond farewell and upgrade. Now I have a MacBook Pro *and* my Powerbook G5 will agree to work if pressed into service for small jobs. In the interim between the G5 and the MacBook Pro, Mick has always answered my technical questions whether by phone or email. WARINNG! Mics Macs is not truly apple certified!!!! despite what they may tell you or you may see on their website, it is not true. I recently took my Mac Book Pro in to the Apple store because among all the other problems i've had since getting it fixed with Mics Macs (Such as a failed brand new SSD hard drive) It now is choosing to randomly power down on me when ever it chooses. Apple has told me that there AGAIN is something wrong with my hardware and that the installation of my new hard drives (Mic "talked" me into taking out my optical drive and putting in a extra 1TB storage drive, which is great, but did not tell me that it would void my apple care!!!!!!!) Something did not get installed properly and that is why my computer will randomly power down on me with out warning. I've spent over $2,000 in repairs, replaced hard drives and "upgrades" with these guys and Unfortunately I've had nothing but problems since. DON'T LET THIS GUY FOOL YOU. He's a Smooth talker/salesman and He will ROB you of your money faster than you can bat an eyelash. read more
