We started with pints of cider, then ordered dinner. I had the Irish Cream Chicken, two chicken cutlets pounded thin and sauteed, served over mashed potatoes and topped with a Bushmills gravy with green beans. We got a second side, and I decided on the champ, a potato and leek mash with spring onions. Extra sauce served on the side had green beans in it, too. My husband ordered the lamb shank and enjoyed it, as well. It came with mashed potato, but he ordered the side of French fried onions (onion rings, which were a little greasy). After that, I was full, but Mr. S. asked to at least see a dessert menu. It was a tough decision between the pavlova and the hot fudge cake, but we opted to share the cake. A simple two-layer chocolate cake, drenched in a warm chocolate sauce and served with our choice of ice cream or fresh cream. Not overly fancy, but completely delicious.

We arrived around 1.30pm, downstairs was pretty empty so we lifted a few menus and sat down. A girl quickly came to serve us for drinks and let us browse menu. Typically pub grub and lots to choose from. I had the lamb roast and mum had chicken maryland(see pics) Both meals were generous servings, especially for lunch time. I thought the food was very nice and really well priced. The meat is supplied my Hannons butchers. Free off road parking out back. Friendly staff. The dining area upstairs looked very nice(think its just for dinner or busy times)

St. Paul's recently went through a makeover and is now a very spacious and clean sports bar. Decent prices for drinks too and with a great coffee machine if you prefer a latte with your football or hurling games on the big screen. Normally with its fair share of regulars and affectionately known by some as 'the jockey' this bar is really up and coming. They also have a function room for hire and have onsite catering facilities, which when I was growing up was a massive 18th birthday party spot. The profits from the club go to support the Gaelic and Hurling programs in St. Paul's which gives a great distraction for all young people in the area and really represents the best parts of this side of Belfast. When we arrived the place was absolutely packed, which is always a sign of a good place. The interior of this place is absolutely brilliant, with everything being so modern and new. The best thing about Mint is that it has three different floors each with a different atmosphere. The bottom floor is has got the feel of a traditional bar, almost like somewhere you'd go after work for a few sociable's. The second floor is what I like to call the "dancey part", this where all the young ones show off their new moves as featured by Justin Beiber. Finally the third floor is the laid back part, it's a lot smaller than the other two floors but has a cocktail bar and chill out area. This is where the not so young ones go when their feet are sore and they want a bit of space from the dance floor. However, if anyone has come up from the country to Cookstown before, they will probably know the bad part of this story. When it comes to closing time, everybody is literally chucked out onto the streets which results in argy-bargy, thrown chips and a lot of fighting. When we left here there was police everywhere who kind of put a dampener on your night but other than this, it's a great spot.

The lady of the manor had sausage and creamed potatoes of which only a soupcon of potato remained. After a respectable rest period we ordered dessertsPavlovas being most popular while I had toffee cheesecakecrunchy base with a deep soft toffee centre and topped with a thin crisp chocolate layer. The other desserts came with deep melt in-the-mouth pavlova topped with forest fruits and fresh cream. A little ice-cream was all her ladyship could manage! VerdictI'll be back. Food is excellent and it's a friendly place with busy but helpful people and seems to welcome all ages. If there is a problem it would be that I was tempted to watch the TV screens in the booths opposite which may be off-putting for the diners there. On Friday 23rd December 2016 I spent most of the day in Hillsborough Castle for musical rehearsals…read morei.e. the "Come And Sing" chorus who were to perform Handel's Messiah that night in Belfast along with a professional group of early music specialists called Sestina. The rehearsals were held in Hillsborough Castle as part of the "Georgian Family Christmas" tours, held from Wednesday 21st to Friday 23rd December. There were therefore many tourists in the castle in addition to the considerably increased number of musicians on the Friday. We had 90 minutes for lunch and as we could not bring food into Hillsborough Castle, there was a massive influx of people from the castle to the surrounding restaurants at lunchtime. The Plough (directly opposite the castle) was already full when I arrived as one of a group of five people but they directed us to their neighbouring restaurant - The Vintage Rooms (soon to be full also). The food was excellent, in my case a mini baked Camembert followed by a Stilton and broccoli tart, as was my bottled craft beer, McGrath's Stout. There was, unfortunately, the stress of seeing the clock hands turn and turn, knowing that we had to be back in rehearsal at the castle at 2pm but at least we weren't the last to get back. I would certainly like to revisit The Vintage Rooms when not under pressure of time to be somewhere else.

On entrance you'll spot the Smeg fridge door which leads to the toilets and if you follow this hallway there's some really cool art murals by Visual Waste advertising some of drinks available such as Tanqueray, Absolut & Hop House 13. After the cool door is the deli, with their glossy glass displays filled with mouthwatering cakes, sausage rolls, an array of freshly baked scones, a fridge filled with individually wrapped cheese to buy and traybakes galore you can't miss it and will find it difficult to peel your eyes away from. You can takeaway or dine in. We chose to dine in and as it was sunny picked one of their outdoor tables. The interior design in this place is epic. Our table was made from a huge old barrell and the stool legs from wood used in barells also. Alot of thought has been put into the decor, especially the two bar areas. The lunch menu consists of a selection of small plates, salads and light options. I had the sweet potato fries topped with pulled beef brisket, chili and a fried egg. They were amazing, the egg was perfectly cooked, the fries crispy and the brisket tender with just the right amount of chili. Portion size was perfect. I also had satay chicken wings, these weren't the best I've ever had as the wings had very little meat on them. The satay sauce really worked though with whatever meat there was. I'd definitely recommend this place. It was quite busy when i visited on a weekday so it might be best to book ahead if going at the weekend or busier times. It's connected to the Plough Inn which is also a bar and restaurant and they have another restaurant attached called Simply Seafood. They're located in the main street of Hillsborough close to the entrance to the Fort, so once you've had lots of tasty food you can go walk it off in Hillsborough Forest Park and go visit the swans and ducks.
