I initially came here because I suddenly became dog-less and was really just looking to meet some pups and get some love in and get my fix because I missed my dog . And to find out information of the volunteering process. Well I picked out a few went to the counter to let them know and they told me "sorry we should've told you we close in 10 mins " so I had to leave . Not a big thing , came back the next day. I had picked 3 dogs to see and 2 of them were acting much more aggressive than the prior day so I decided against them and got the girl I wanted to see the most out . I met her , we hit it off and I went home thinking "oh wow I might be getting a dog again " - wasn't my intention at all when I went in but god had other plans . I wanted to make her really comfortable with me before taking her home but also I needed to get my house ready (professionally cleaned my carpets , full deep clean of the house to remove the prior dogs scent , get new toys , cage , bed , etc ) I communicated all of this to the people I was working with at the shelter and they encouraged me to do so but also put a hold On her so that she wouldn't go anywhere . And I was assured since the holds are 24hrs that i could come back and place another hold the following day so that I could ensure she was there bc I was super busy with my business at the time and I needed to get done with my appointments and get my house together to have her . So the next few days after work I would come , meet her and just play so we can become familiar. Well this is where the bad experience starts , upon placing the first hold and coming back I had to deal with a older man who was very clearly not enthusiastic about helping me at all . His tone was rude and he wouldn't look me in the face . I stood at the counter waiting for help for 5 mins before he even acknowledged my presence ( mind you I've been to this shelter 4 times at this point- on a first name basis with 3 other workers - and I've seen him before ) So that was strike number one . When he finally acknowledged me , he started giving me a hard time about the hold and I explained to him I've been working with 3 other ladies and they all told me this was fine and now you're changing up the rules . Frankly I felt he was being prejudice towards me but that's not something I can prove , it's just how he talked to me and made me feel . So then he goes and whispers the situation to this other random lady - who I can only assume was a supervisor. Dark hair with glasses . She was extremely rude . Not only did she NOT even move from the computer she was standing at to come look me in the face and have a conversation, but she was adamant that her and the man were correct that I couldn't place multiple holds on the same dog but that everyone else that told me the same information (that i could) was wrong . Needless to say I felt extremely disrespected by these two and they are the sole reason I won't be back here for any reason . Like I said I originally went in to play with some dogs but also to apply to volunteer. I did the application and everything and was ready to move to next steps to actually get in there . After dealing with those two and knowing if I volunteer I'd have to deal with them , the desire to volunteer instantly disappeared. They were so rude and disrespectful I refuse to give them my time for free . I did still adopt my girl because they weren't stopping me from doing that and getting her out of there but they definitely are not good representation to have at the front desk or in management . And for their hold policy, a counter point for them to consider , if someone is willing to continually put money down to keep a dog there until they can take them home why would you not allow them to do so ? You are increasing the odds of that dog going to a home but also YOU ARE INCREASING REVENUE . Why would you deny more money for the business ? That makes no sense and is bad business . Rethink your policies , your leadership , and your front desk reps . Absolutely horrible experience, you get 2 stars only because I absolutely adore and love my dog . Thank you to the kind ladies that did help me and were on my side , you're the reason I'm so happy right now . So thank you. I hope one of you becomes the head supervisor, all 3 of you are much more deserving of the position. I wish I remembered their names . They are truly the saving grace of this place .

The Michigan Humane Society Shelter located in Westland is a very large facility.  It doesn't appear so when you drive by but once in the parking lot it becomes obvious that there is a large facility here with spacious grounds. We went here because our cockatiel had escaped.  It was a cold rainy day and we had her out of her cage for some exercise.  The back door was opened and she saw her chance and winged her way to her perceived freedom or adventure.  She took one dip in the back yard, hung a right and was gone.  We heard her from time to time in the backyard but eventually the chirping and signing was heard no more. We felt she was gone for good.  We posted information for her on a missing bird site and three weeks later someone five miles away turned the bird into a local police department!  The police gave the bird to the Humane Society and we went there to pick her up. There was a reasonable fee to pay.  The staff was very kind and helpful.  They were having an adoption event and getting everything set up.  They helped us with kindness and respect.  They had lots of cats on hand and dogs to adopt too.  Not only that there were hamsters and one of the biggest bunnies I've ever seen in my life.  It was the size of a medium sized dog.  I believe it was a Flemish giant.  What a treat!  I wish I could have taken it home but I don't have space yet.

I have a new member of my family, and his name is Sparky! After some misses and just bizarre experiences with a few local rescue organizations, I was feeling discouraged about my chances of adopting a dog. I wanted to provide a home for a dog that otherwise wouldn't have one, and I didn't want to perpetuate the pet-shop-puppy cycle. Plus, my fella and I were looking for a somewhat older, calmer dog that might fit our life a bit better than a puppy. Don't get me wrong I love puppies -- how can someone not? It's just that I wasn't sure a puppy would be the best choice for our lives at the moment. Just as I was feeling down about the process and the odds of connecting with the right little companion, I noticed a posting on Petfinder from the Michigan Humane Society. Sparky, a 7-8 yr old poodle mix (a plus, since my fella has some allergies), looked like a sweet little gentleman (gentle-dog?). I pounced on the chance and called the MHS in Westland, and they assured me that he was still available. I made a trip in, got to hang out with Sparky in a little "getting to know you" room, and was smitten. They were able to put him on a one-hour hold while I went to get my partner to introduce the two. It was love at first sight for both of them, and the rest is history! Every step of the way, I found the folks working at the shelter friendly, kind and informative. At times, there were a lot of people with various requests and needs -- both at the front counter and on the phone. It would have been easy to be overwhelmed, but all of the employees kept their cool. Sparky needed a few medications, and they explained them to us clearly as well as giving us the rundown on follow-up medical care. Things were well organized, clear, and the shelter facilities themselves were clean and well taken care of. As far as responsiveness and clarity of the pet adoption process, this branch of the Michigan Humane Society gets high marks from me.

    Marta & Nikko

I came to the Westland site yesterday. Wasn't sure about adopting but had seen Nikko on the web page a bunch of times. Fell right in love when I met him. The staff was wonderful with my baby girl Marta and helped introduce her to Nikko in. Safe and reassuring way. I am very much appreciative

Dr. Schoenherr deserves to receive all blessings she asks for. I love the entire staff. After years of trying to help my girl Nosey Rosey, we all made the difficult discission to have her Euthanized. You would have thought this was Dr. Schoenherr's pet with all the patience, love, and Gentle words she said. It was such a beautiful release of Nosey Rosey's spirit, I can only wish my time would be the same. Dr. Schoenherr sat next to me and fed Rosey some chocolate to eat on her way to her long forever sleep. Dr. Schoenherr told me that everyone should leave with a sweet taste in their mouth. I have had family members come here and have the same feelings. So, if you want the best care for your pet through good and bad times D'Andmo Vet is the place you should be. I looked up vets on Yelp to check websites. When I called here instead of an answering machine, a real person picked up the phone. After listening to me, she agreed that Oscar needed to be seen quickly. I couldn't bring him that afternoon because of work so I got the first appointment after work which was just 2 days. I knew he would make it that far. I brought him in and the care was for both of us. After the vet checked him, she agreed that it was time. He had a mass in the tummy area. I knew it was time when he didn't fight getting in the carrier and was quiet on the ride unlike 6 weeks ago when I had to move him to the new place. Since I had given shots to cats before I told them they didn't have to take him out of the room to give the shot to relax him so the IV could be placed. I was able to talk and pet him until he was relaxed. After taking him out to do that, he was brought back in wrapped in a soft towel so I could hold him. I was giving all the time I needed. The price was very reasonable. They didn't mind me using Pet Passages for the cremation and he could stay there until they picked him up that evening. Plenty of parking and evening hours make it convenient. Since I adopted a 17 year old cat, I will be using here for my vet.
