The Michigan Humane Society Shelter located in Westland is a very large facility.  It doesn't appear so when you drive by but once in the parking lot it becomes obvious that there is a large facility here with spacious grounds. We went here because our cockatiel had escaped.  It was a cold rainy day and we had her out of her cage for some exercise.  The back door was opened and she saw her chance and winged her way to her perceived freedom or adventure.  She took one dip in the back yard, hung a right and was gone.  We heard her from time to time in the backyard but eventually the chirping and signing was heard no more. We felt she was gone for good.  We posted information for her on a missing bird site and three weeks later someone five miles away turned the bird into a local police department!  The police gave the bird to the Humane Society and we went there to pick her up. There was a reasonable fee to pay.  The staff was very kind and helpful.  They were having an adoption event and getting everything set up.  They helped us with kindness and respect.  They had lots of cats on hand and dogs to adopt too.  Not only that there were hamsters and one of the biggest bunnies I've ever seen in my life.  It was the size of a medium sized dog.  I believe it was a Flemish giant.  What a treat!  I wish I could have taken it home but I don't have space yet. read more

I love, love, love my new dog Morty. I adopted him 1 week ago today. He's 2, and was at the shelter for almost a month. Admittedly, he was horrible at our meet 'n greet because the smells on the floor were much more interesting than me. He also was on medication for diarrhea. And, he was categorized as being only appropriate with children 12+, as well as being aggressive with other dogs. (I probably should mention that he needed to fill the very big paws of my best dog ever, Dexter, who I had to put down a month prior to meeting Morty.) I know it hasn't been that long that I've had Morty, but he gets me and my life. He now wiggles his butt so much for me when I get home from work that I can't wait to see him. His poohs are regular. He loves our neighbor dogs, and he instinctively knows to be gentle with my 89-year-old mom. I think Burman does an excellent job of finding the right dog for the right people. read more

They will only help you with a found pet if you live in Westland. If you live in Wayne, even if you are willing to keep the animal just need to have them checked out to see if they are safe, you will be told to send them to the pound to die. read more

I JUST adopted the most adorable puppy named Avery from this location. I've been searching online, filling out adoption applications with little or no responses from various charity shelters, and suddenly a bunch of puppies were available so I left early from work to go down and take a look. To my surprise all the puppies were gone, except Avery, who was on hold until the end of the day. Luckily for me, the folks who had her put on hold didn't take her so of course I did! The place is nice, it looks like they have young adults or high school kids able to come in and play with the dogs - which sounds great for the dogs and teenagers. The staff were friendly, and Courtney helped me out and explained everything very well. I'm so glad I stopped by! If anyone is looking for a puppy and you know they are available, don't wait, go as soon as possible. read more

I am not saying they do not help animals, I am saying it is definitely not my first choice. Having adopted cats from both here and Ann Arbor, there is just a world of difference. They are very inflexible here and they just do not have any real warmth at all. I have seen them turn down people for adoption for very minor reasons. They are a kill shelter and I guess I would rather see an animal get some chance rather than none. We recently rescued a stray we could not keep as our cat is a strictly solo type and we have a one pet limit at any rate. My mom ended up crying at Ann Arbor and begged them not to make me take it to Westland because I feared it would be euthanized there. We made a good donation and they had it adopted out in under a week and even kept us posted about it which I appreciated. If I could adopt more cats I would. read more

I have a new member of my family, and his name is Sparky! After some misses and just bizarre experiences with a few local rescue organizations, I was feeling discouraged about my chances of adopting a dog. I wanted to provide a home for a dog that otherwise wouldn't have one, and I didn't want to perpetuate the pet-shop-puppy cycle. Plus, my fella and I were looking for a somewhat older, calmer dog that might fit our life a bit better than a puppy. Don't get me wrong I love puppies -- how can someone not? It's just that I wasn't sure a puppy would be the best choice for our lives at the moment. Just as I was feeling down about the process and the odds of connecting with the right little companion, I noticed a posting on Petfinder from the Michigan Humane Society. Sparky, a 7-8 yr old poodle mix (a plus, since my fella has some allergies), looked like a sweet little gentleman (gentle-dog?). I pounced on the chance and called the MHS in Westland, and they assured me that he was still available. I made a trip in, got to hang out with Sparky in a little "getting to know you" room, and was smitten. They were able to put him on a one-hour hold while I went to get my partner to introduce the two. It was love at first sight for both of them, and the rest is history! Every step of the way, I found the folks working at the shelter friendly, kind and informative. At times, there were a lot of people with various requests and needs -- both at the front counter and on the phone. It would have been easy to be overwhelmed, but all of the employees kept their cool. Sparky needed a few medications, and they explained them to us clearly as well as giving us the rundown on follow-up medical care. Things were well organized, clear, and the shelter facilities themselves were clean and well taken care of. As far as responsiveness and clarity of the pet adoption process, this branch of the Michigan Humane Society gets high marks from me. read more

Their adoption process is good, their prices fair but you sign a contract agreeing to return a pet if they are not working out. Our (Lucy) ended up not working out for our family, so we dropped her back off as agreed with almost a years worth of heart worm medicine, a huge bag of food, treats and toys and just told them that Lucy was a great dog but was a jumper and not working out for us with a young daughter. When I called to check on her two hours later they had already KILLED her. I was stunned, shocked and heartbroken and I promise you this is a true story. . Please note this is a KILL location. I would have given our Lucy away for free to someone but did as we were told to do if the adoption did not work out. Get your new fur-ever friend elsewhere! read more

As a fur mom when your pups have surgery, it's often a very stressful time. I was referred by a friend to have my two doodles spayed here and had them professionally groomer prior to the appointment. I wish I would've went somewhere else! They assured me my pets were in "good and safe hands". What a lie that was! Picked up my little fur babies and they were covered in their own feces! The smell was awful and one of them was crying as well! When asked why the response was, "oh it happens". I asked why no one cleaned them and the response was, "they probably just did it". I said a lot of it is dry and crumbly which would mean this didn't just happen..The staff then pointed me to the direction of the restroom and told me I could use the hand towels to wash my dogs off! How disgusting of them! I asked them for an actual towel and that the Dr. or Nurse come see me asap. They came back and handed me the towel and said I could do it quickly. Absolutely unacceptable! The nurse that came out was very nonchalant and couldn't answer any questions AT ALL about why my animals were treated in such a way! My dogs had beautiful fur as they are doodles but the staff decided to completely ruin it! The cut was so uneven that they looked unkept coming back to me! I'm obviously still upset about this as it has yet to grow back properly even after hundreds on pro grooming! I have photos of all of this as well! Nasty staff and worst of all it turns out the Michagne Humane Society aren't that humane to animals after all! I've left numerous messages and tried to contact their corporate office several times to no avail. No one will reach out and it's quite obvious no one cares! Go somewhere else! read more

The facility is well managed ..spotless and even handicapp friendly..my cat disappeared 1/9/21 and I went to look see if someone dropped him off there. Im actually in the same subdivision and can ride my wheelchair up there and check daily for a week straight. im going up there every day. My cat will not stay in the house, and thinks a cat litter box is a bed. So if someone let him in their house he's not going to like being kept in doors. So I'm going up there every day ..cuz it might take a while, but the person that took him will give up on keeping him indoors. I explained this and they are with me every step of the way..GREAT PEOPLE read more

I recently adopted my second rescue from here. I was really surprised that they now charge $400 for puppy adoptions, however if the intent was to stop abusers from buying in bulk, then I have Absolutely no problem paying more to give a dog a good home. My second adoption experience was great. All the staff were friendly and helpful. They answered ALL my annoying questions. The cost of adoption did include spaying her, so that's a plus. It also includes one free check up to make sure puppy was acclimating well. Micro chipping is available at the time of adoption as well as the time of spaying ($25-$30). They also offer a 60 day return policy- a full refund if you bring the dog back to them, if it doesn't work out. I did not need to use this as my new puppy is the coolest little girl ever. I will ALWAYS recommend this place. It is by far the cleanest shelter; each dog has their own room to decrease stress on them. And they are always clean (never left to sit in heir own waste). read more

I find it absolutely incredible that animal shelters are still run in such an outdated manner with too many people without true compassion for the people who are desperately trying to find a lost family member. The stress and anguish should not be exacerbated by anyone on some bizarre power trip. They tell you to come in and look for your pet. It's not so bad at 1st but upon entering the back area where lost and found are housed, it becomes a real problem. Too small a space for all coming in stressed out and crying, however, one of the main issues is the smell once entering the rooms with the pets. The smell BEFOREHAND in the tiny office area is almost as bad. The woman is not nice. She's there to get your ID and scan it. WHAT? As long as you can produce a valid ID, why not just return it? They scan it and keep it until you come out of the smelly rooms. Then I was told that if your lost baby is with the Westland shelter for (5) FIVE DAYS, "THEY BELONG TO US." WHAT?!! That awful experience will cause you sleepless nights and THAT policy needs to be updated to accommodate the needs of grieving, anxious folks who need REAL reassurance that the shelter will do what's in the best interest of each individual cases they come in. I have volunteered in shelters and not seen these policies as antiquated as this. Please Westland HUMANE SOCIETY Care about the Pet Parents focus solely on reuniting these families. *This is a kill facility so if you're lost, scared furry family member is in THEIR care for (5) daysthey belong to US means what exactly??!! I want to say that for me, this location was awesome in helping to deal with a very tough situation. My lab who I had for nearly 16 years, which we got from a out of state animal shelter, was a very close member of the family. As he reached a point in which it was simply unfair for him to have to suffer any longer, I had called around to find out the process at about 3 local vets. A friend had mentioned the humane society, which I never really looked at them in this way. In talking to the vets, it really seemed as if they were more about making a buck or 300 rather than helping deal with a very bad situation. The humane society only charged a small fee, and really was very supportive and understanding to this emotional situation. They allowed us to stay and gave us time after to deal with the situation, and were all around champs in supporting us and making our pet feel comfortable, in my opinion. When you think of the humane society, you think of a place to pick up or drop off pets, for me they helped to say good bye to a friend. read more

I took my cat here to be spayed, they were very dishonest with the price of the procedure, it was told a 140 for the operation but I ended up paying almost 200 hundred dollar. almost a month after surgery my cat is acting strange and being really whiny. read more

As far as pet surrendering, I do not recommend this place. I made the appointment by phone and even mention my dog's aggression issue towards treats ONLY.....it didn't matter to them. I showed up to the appointment ready to go and surrender our dog due to lack of time and our babys health. Anyway I show up gave my info , including the pet surrender form, with detailed info on her" bad behavior " still they charged me 35 bucks, soon after that I got taken into a back room where they told me in a nutchell that they couldn't take her because of her aggression of treats ( only growls) not food. Still they chose to take my money and waste my time. PLEASE save your self a phone call, trip and ur money. Appereantly they want a robot dog This location is so thirsty to suck your money. 2 chances of them saving me the time and money, still no mercy, all because I was HONEST to begin with. read more

The last time I was here it brought a smile to my face to see how much more space the dogs have. The employees here are helpful and really care about the animals. Their "fixin" equipment was down so had to take my kitty across the way to the vet next door roughly a week or 2 later to get her fixed, but wasn't a big deal at all. My 2 year old and 6 month old great danes ran off yesterday so i came here to check for my dogs and do a walk through, i had both the AKC and CKC paperwork for both dogs with my name on the paperwork and showed her my drivers license and they would not tell me anything unless i filled out some paperwork to do a walk through. I just filled out 1 walk through paper and when me and my 2 daughters walked through and we found our dogs. Not only did i feel like i was being treated like a criminal, she looked at me like i was crazy when i said they were both mine, because i didnt fill out 2 walk through forms for both dogs. Both of the AKC and CKC paperwork was not good enough, she wanted pictures and pet records??? I did not know it at the time but I was dealing with the manager already I told her the vet that we took the dog to and she called the vet and came back and said they did not know who I was or the dog so I called the vet and they verified my information right away!?!? I asked her if she called that same vet and she said yes? I was blown away that the manager of the Humane Society called to verify my pets medical records and failed miserably, she then told me she could release my two-year-old dog but not my six month old puppy unless I had pictures or vet records. the dogs were just lost yesterday and I came in first thing when they opened and she's treating me like a criminal this is just ridiculous and I can't believe they let someone like this run the shelter. I told her she can hold on to the dogs until I can make some formal complaints to the board of directors, because these are obviously my dogs and she was making it way to difficult, I grabbed my daughter's and left. Very disappointed! Now I have 2 more 30 min commutes because the manager wanted to play games. Ridiculous! read more

First, the staff here is a joke. They all upsell you the entire time you have conversation and don't even care about the animal! Taking my cats to get fixed all they wanted to do was have me do extra things the cat didn't need. Secondly the staff knows nothing! I called and asked for advice on a situation and the lady on the phone was so dumb and rude it took me 20 minutes to accomplish what I could of online. Not only was she rude and asked things like how do you spell smith? Or "you said they vomited correct?" After my initial reason for calling was because they had thrown up and was the first thing I said and repeated many times. I thought about actually going to the place and taking to a manager after dealing with her. The other boy next to her is no better! Overall they need a NEW STAFF who actually CARE and aren't dumber than a box of rocks. read more

If there were zero stars I would give them that. Twice I drove over 30 mins to see a particular dog showing on website. First time dog not there, drive back home (30 mins). Look at website thinking dog adopted, nope still there. I call and explain dog wasn't there, she checked elsewhere, yes, dog is still there. Then I'm asked if I know anything about this dog, "only what humane society has posted". She proceeds to tell me this dog is very aggressive towards other small animals (squirrels, etc). What the hell dog doesnt?? So, back I go the next day. This time dog is there, but another family is with the dog. But theres a new little dog that had not been there day before. I took the paper went out to front desk so I could meet the dog. I stood there not knowing what to do for approximately 10-15 mind before I asked another family there what to do, since not one of the workers could politely stand up and say, "If you are wanting to meet a dog, please sign your name and fill out a form and we will be with you on order you signed"! Now, it took me longer to type that than it does to say it. As I'm looking for the paper the family told me about, I am extremely and rudely told to step away from the huge desk (that only 2 people were at). So, I get the paper, I step away from the desk, and fill the paper out very sloppily, because I have no hard surface to write on and I wait my turn, and wait, and wait, and wait, and wait. There was one name on the paper in front of mine. An hour later, I walked back to where the dogs were, put the paper back, went back out front, scribbled my name off the paper and walked out without even getting to meet a dog. I come home and look on the website again to see if the newer dog is on site....nope!! I will NEVER go back to this humane society again. The little b**ch that was working the counter does not have the personality to hold that kind of job, no compassion. I hope she doesn't have contact with the animals. I am now going to Saving Tails Animal Rescue, and/or Last Day Dog Rescue. Costs less and they care read more

We spent time with a dog at the Berman Center - Michigan Humane Society in Westland. My family fell in love with Sasha and since it was closing time, we said we would be back the next day to adopt the her. At that time, we were struck at how uncaring the staff there was and disappointed at the supposed caretakers' attitudes toward the animals. We were driven to rescue the dog from this place. My husband called as soon as they opened to let them know we intended to be by later to adopt her, knowing that she wouldn't be able to go home until her surgery was done (spay). They said that she could come home now since they needed to wait to spay her. We called a few hours later to let them know we were on our way. When we arrived they "lost the file", took an hour to gather up their supervisor to tell us that our dog was no longer adoptable due to ringworm. "Would we like to pick out another dog?" This dog had already been in our heart! No, she is the dog we love and can't be replaced! After countless attempts to speak with this supervisor again, it took their corporate office to get the supervisor to call us back after nearly 24 hours. They had already killed our dog before we got there. They didn't have the courage to tell us to our face that they screwed up. Their lack of professionalism, inability to run an efficient office, and complete disregard to their own mission statement led to the death of my potential new family member. I'm heartbroken and so are my 3 children. This did NOT have to happen. They need to clean up their staff and remember that they are there for the animals - not new fancy buildings and money to line their own pockets. DO NOT SUPPORT MHS - THEY KILL DOGS THAT HAVE POTENTIAL HOMES!! USE NO-KILL RESCUES!!! read more

I volunteered here and the staff was so rude to me. They gave off a vibe that I was a burden to them. Especially the woman with the long red hair. I was a dog walker so I would need to get keys for the cages. She would roll her eyes at me and act like it was such a hassle. sorry dogs and other furry and feathered animals, but I have called MHS numerous time about dogs being neglected and what was I told? my city (Inkster MI) is not in their jurisdiction and they would do nothing . Call Detroit dog rescue at least they will take action! Also I had a dog of mine put down at this shelter years ago by a doctor did not do 2 young girls did very uncaring will not go back. Took my cat there to be neutered and they charged me almost $300 for unnessisary screenings, shots, and the surgery. They also chipped him when he wasn't supposed to be and charged me for it. They also clipped his nails down the bone, way farther than what should be done, when he wasn't supposed to have them done at all and charged me for that as well. They gave me hardly any instructions when he was done with the surgery. Went there again recently just to play with one of the dogs even though we knew we couldn't adopt it. Thought it would be appreciated for someone to come let a dog out of the cage and let it play for a bit. We had told the employees we couldn't adopt the dog and they had us fill out paperwork and had us wait for at least an hour just for them to change their mind and tell us they can only take the dogs out for a potential home. Time was totally wasted. They also sold me a cat under the information that he was good with other cats and had no medical issues other than what he was already being treated for. The cat absolutely hated other cats and had a parasite in his poop that was spreading bugs all over my apartment. read more

Such a bad experience for me and there are too many issues for me to list here with both the shelter and the clinic but I will list just some. Although I have purchased several pets in the past from this shelter I will not go there ever again. My animal is healthy now because of my own veterinarian's treatment of her and I will not bring her back to that clinic to be spayed. I will take her to my own vet to have this procedure done and the money for spaying included in the adoption fee will be lost. Still, they are not going to touch my baby ever again. Her health problems should have been noted at the shelter but were not. Parasites and fleas plus the expected kennel cough. They assured me that she had been checked for parasites and fleas and had none. I had to pay the clinic for all of her treatment due to these obvious issues that two of them should have been taken care of at the shelter. They assured me she had been checked and was healthy. The humane society has become a money hungry organization and I would advise people to look at other shelters in dire need of people to adopt. The adoption fees are way out of line with other shelters. This is a real shame as you would think they would want to get as many animals adopted out as possible in this poor economy. This is a kill shelter and they would rather kill the animals than help people to adopt them who might have low finances but have so much love to give. They will not even budge on the adoption fees and have a real smart ass attitude about it, however I did like the woman who handled the adoption papers. She was very nice. Many can just not afford the high adoption fees and the initial vet visits too. It was a stretch for me but I was able to come up with the $350 fee for a mixed breed puppy. $350??? You tell me that is not selling animals! She'd only been there for couple of days so how much could that have cost them? Plus there was a $25 deposit fee on spaying within 30 days. That's if they are healthy enough to spay within 30 days. Many just cannot come up with that $375 fee or even the $190 for an older dog. The clinic, in my opinion is totally incompetent and I have good reason to feel that way. This is my personal opinion but I wanted to warn people it is not all roses over there at either the shelter or the clinic. I love my new baby very much and would not trade her for the world. I am very grateful for her and we are now joined at the hip. I would never let anything happen to her and that is why I would NEVER take her back to that clinic. I just wish this entire experience had not left such a bad taste in my mouth making it improbable that I would ever recommend the Westland shelter or clinic to anyone. They showed no interest in making things right. I am still waiting for a promised refund and do not expect to ever see it. What happened to them? They used to be a wonderful and respected place to get a pet. Such a shame! Yes, there is more but I won't go into it here. Please think about going to another shelter. They need you more than this shelter does. The Humane Society must be very financially well off with the prices they charge. And one more thing... the clinic was no cheaper than my own vet as I took their bill up to him and he was actually cheaper on the treatments. Inexcusable experience!!! I will be very surprised if they publish this as there are way too many good reviews out there and I will bet there are a lot of people who feel the same way as I do and are not being heard. I am so unhappy with them I could cry. read more
