I've been using Michael's Custom framing for many years. My initial Custom Frame project didn't come out very well. Now I buy frames off their sales floor. They just needed to set my art/needlepoint into the framing. It's been a hit or miss with the quality of work and communication. They need serious quality control! I was very pleased with two staff members this morning. One person walked me quite a distance to help me find floral foam. A second person assisted me very patiently with the checkout process which was new to me. I was impressed with the extra effort displayed especially during this busy holiday time. Was very excited to see that my Michael's in Gurnee has instituted curbside pickup and you just let them know when you are on your way and when you have arrived. I did all that on the smartphone, but you still have to call when you get there. I did that and gave my name and order number and was told they would be right out. Then I sat and sat. I would estimate about 15 minutes. In that time, I saw Michael employees collecting carts but no one came to deliver my order. So I called again and this time about after 5 minutes a very nice employee came out to tell me they had been looking for my order and couldn't find it (would have been nice to get this update sooner) and that I probably ordered from a different store. I do a lot of stupid things so this was entirely possible. I checked my confirmation number and I was in the right place. I showed it to the employee and she said she would pull the items and print a receipt. Amazingly, she was back in a few minutes with my unfindable order. Needless to say I was a bit disappointed with curbside pickup procedures. Would have thought they would have it down by now. Update: Just opened bag and the order is wrong! Now I will have to venture inside which is what I was hoping to avoid. Darn! read more

This white old haired lady at the register checking me out got very angry that I didn't wanted to sign up for the rewards program (as if I'm obligated to sign up. who said I HAVE to sign up???. no one) then processed to throw my just purchased items down on the table. I love this location! Obviously the sales are always great (as are all Michaels). This location, though, is always kept so clean and organized. The staff are friendly and willing to help-even if I accidentally bring in invalid coupons-oops!! I've never had any complaints to issue, and the staff always put a smile on my face. This Michael's frequently makes me cry, but this weekend's foray into suburban sprawl was the final straw. Our first visit of the weekend was an attempt to buy a piece of matboard. As we waited at the framing counter, an employee saw and ignored us, and then finally returned to curtly let us know that she'd find someone. Eventually someone in the framing department let us know that matboard is $13.99 a sheet. This wouldn't be that shocking if I didn't know that the same product is available at Dick Blick for between $6 and $7. We left, vowing never to return. Fool me once, etc. but sadly we returned, armed with a 50% off coupon. We were desperate for matboard on a Sunday evening. What can I say? The person at the counter this time was available, and this was almost worse. When asked if she had a particular color, she tersely responded "no" with no offer of alternatives, and when pressed for alternatives she responded that they only had ugly colors and nothing similar to the grey we needed. After much prodding, we were able to produce a neutral (somewhat similar to grey, oddly enough) from this crabby old bag. When we tried to use our coupon with about a novel's worth of fine print stating that we could not use the coupon, the frame shop woman had a fit. While we should have read the coupon more closely, she handled the situation very poorly, and I was even more dismayed to find out that she was actually the manager of the frame department. I do not know what crawled into this woman's soul and turned her more sour than the grinch, but I've never had such cranky customer service from a non-teen employee, especially a manager. This experience, in addition to the ridiculous upcharging on framing supplies, and cramped layout of this store, has inspired me to find friendlier craft alternatives. End lengthy rant. read more

Michael's is my favorite go-to craft store. First, it's close to my house. Second, I can find a last minute gift idea for a nephew at a Birthday or Christmas. Third, we've found unusual yarns for a friend's knitting project, fondant and special pans for my christmas cake projects, and most lately, great tools and supplies to make beaded bracelets. There's usually a good coupon available, and if you don't have it, ask! They might have one at the register. Or even try the Michaels app for your phone to get the best deals loaded when you visit. The lines can be kind of long sometimes, but it never takes too long. Michael's is a great craft supply store and you don't have to be worried if they're open on Sunday (they are) or whether they're trying to take away their female employees' reproductive rights under their health insurance policy like the other guy in Round Lake Beach. Michael's is great if you know exactly what you want, and if you know exactly where it is in the store. If you ever have to rely on asking an employee, then best of luck on the goose chase they send you on (along with blank stares and mumbles that include lots of "ums" and "not sures"). And to the above comment, I don't expect to waited on by any employee. I do think it is fair to expect some basic courtesy, and to address simple customer service. I don't really even expect the HS age employees to know where items are in the store. They are clearly minimum-wage drones not being paid to think. And that's completely the fault of management. I recently came into the Gurnee location to get a duplicate receipt for a company reimbursement. The "manager" made it this huge loud ordeal. Lecturing me as she kept shaking her finger so close to my face, that I had to take a step back. I was told it would require at least a half-hour and she was not good at using computers. Then, she said she could not help me because she wanted to leave for the day. OKAY? Well, can I get a card for the manager? NO. Can I get an email for the manager? NO. Can the manager call me? He can try. Can I get a phone number for the manager? NO, but you can get our store phone number online. When will your manager be in? Sometime in the morning. I did make the remark that the customer service needed needed help. The response to me was "that's how we do business here". I will say that the manager I talked to the next day was very helpful. read more

Only rating the frame shop: I took in 2 pieces recently and didn't have an experience that I was 100% satisfied with. When I voiced my complaint, the management was very kind and helpful - very quick to fix my issues. I was incredibly impressed with the professional manner in which they handled the situation and just love the way the pieces look now. I would definitely bring work here for framing in the future. I purchased over $120.00 worth of lowers on Saturday at the Gurnee store. Before I even bought them I asked the sales lady if they were going on sale soon. She said if they do in the next 10 days to just bring the reciept back and they would credit us. Of course the very next day they went on sale for 50% off. I called the store to make sure they would honor the sale price and again was told to bring my reciept, along with the products and they would give me credit. My husband brought the flowers and receipt back to the Gurnee, IL store today and was told they would not do it. Then the "new" manager got involved and was so rude and rufused to honor the sale. My husband was about to just return everything when the manager finally told him he would give him credit, BUT NEVER AGAIN! What's up with that? I never heard of such a thing....we were told by two different employees it was not a problem.....it was two days later.....and on top of that the "new" manager was a real jackass. I always liked Michael's but I guess I'll be heading to Hobby Lobby from now on. What a jerk! My husband really felt sorry for the employee as he barked at her like it was her fault. read more

I accidentally picked up regular size glue sticks instead of mini's. I had the receipt and all I wanted to do was exchange one for the other (they were the same price). They wanted my driver's license so they could put my license # in their system. Needless to say I wouldn't allow that for an even exchange with a receipt. The manager wouldn't even look at me as I spoke. Not going back there and I sent an e-mail to their corporate office; they told me too bad so sad for me. If I could give a 0 star rating I would. I was completely EMBARRASSED in front of last minute customers tonight. A very RUDE employee yelled at me for something that wasn't even my fault. She was a very unprofessional employee. She was complaining in front of all the customers there about having to stay later than the closing time due to customers like us shopping late. I WILL NEVER, EVER come back to this Michaels ever again. Anyone who works in retail knows that there will always be last minute customers and if you as an employee do not understand that then darling you should go ahead and look for another job because this will not be the last time that this will happen to you. Michaels, you lost a customer tonight and although it might not impact you now, it might in the future. Please train this rude employee with some manners. Good craft store but not as many options as you'd think once you get down to the nitty gritty details, which are the most important when doing crafts. But locally this is the place to go, other craft stores ranging from 20-30 minutes away at least. read more
