I'm a huge crafter so I'm constantly going to Michael's or other stores. I've never had a problem with Michael's other than their yarn sales aren't the best. Every since they took over Joann's yarn I've been trying to come in more to get some of my old favorites but it's hard to justify when it's double the price if was at Joann's. Their craft paper something is on a good sale but other than that I rather take my business for yarn to other craft stores. Even local yarn shops have better quality yarn for similar prices. read more

Really good customer service from the custom framing department. The lady that helped me was professional and helpful. She seemed to care a lot in her selections of frames and mats. The price tag is quite high starting at $230+ and the turn around time is rather long, 2.5 weeks minimum. You do have to pay in full before placing the order. I haven't received the final product yet, but the service has been so far so good. Highly recommend. read more

I had 3 items. Went to checkout, there are 2 self checks. They both had ppl w massive purchases in their carts. I ask the lady behind the counter who had no one @ her register if she was checking out for ppl. She asked me if I was paying cash or card. I told her card, ti which she said you'll have to use self checkout. I looked at that line and then I looked at my 3 items. I walked back to a shelf, deposited my stuff on it and walked out. As a teenager 50 years ago I went to a Grateful Dead / Willie Nelson concert. I saved my ticket stub and concert program. For my 65th birthday, my wife decided to take those items to Michael's to have them nicely framed for me. A very thoughtful gift on her part. Or it would have been. Two weeks after dropping off the program and stub, Micheal's called to tell us the frame was ready. We went to pick up the finished frame. The clerk unwrapped the frame for our inspection and immediately my heart sank. There was no ticket stub in the frame! Only the concert program was there. The clerk assured us that they never lose items and the ticket was probably on somebody's work station. He said they would find it and contact us when it was ready. Another week went by with no word. Finally we went back to Michael's to check on the progress. A different clerk told us; "Nope, That ticket stub is gone". They LOST half of what we brought in to have framed. Now you might say it's only an old ticket stub, probably not worth anything. True. But after 50 years, even small things acquire a value beyond dollars. It's the memory and familiarity that makes them invaluable. Those are not replaceable. If you have memorabilia or personal things that you want to have framed, BE VERY CAREFUL when taking them to Michael's for framing. They might have marketing posters saying they care for your items as much as you do, but they don't. BTW, this happened at the store in Bee Cave, Texas. read more

Custom frames: BIG shout out to Cierra!!! Took advantage of the sale to get a painting framed that we got in Costa Rica. Cierra was super helpful and provided great recommendations. Super cool that their computer system renders the painting with the chosen frame to envision it and/or to compare different frames. Delighted to get this done despite the Coronavirus! Yes, we maintained 6-ft distance from each other! Today's visit was 5 stars. Overall rating is 4 stars because of our prior visit (see review for details). This is a brand new Michaels that just opened today. I had heard that they were going to have twice as much square footage as the store across the street that they were moving from so I was quite excited to go here on their first day and see what they had. The store is huge and spacious, clean and organized with plenty of merchandise but I did not find that they had an increased amount of the craft supplies that I use most. I had hoped that they would have a huge yarn department but instead it almost seems smaller than the one across the street although it may have been the same. There was one aisle with yarn on both sides and a couple of partial aisles. I have been in Michaels stores in other areas that have 4-6 aisles of yarn in the past. Maybe there just aren't enough people in Austin that knit, although there are 3 or 4 yarn shops so one would think that would indicate there were plenty of knitters and crocheters. I checked a few other categories like rubber stamps and marking pens and did not see an increased amount in those areas either. In fact I saw a lot of empty hooks as if they hadn't even gotten in all their merchandise. I didn't buy one single skein of yarn which is very unusual for me in a craft store. I did find a beautiful butterfly paper punch and a nice purple pen so I purchased them. I was so excited for this store to open in the hopes they would have a wider selection but won't be in a big hurry to come back since they don't seem to have an increased inventory in the categories I shop. Maybe people who do other kinds of crafts will have better luck. read more

Don't forget to sign up for their coupons. Some are really, really great. Well this store has about everything that people with crafting ability have, which I do not. We came in for one simple item, per the direction of The Lady, and ended up spending quite a bit of time looking around. Of particular note is there are many items that have farm type items that can be used in a retro looking kitchen. We actually had a good time, and this is not the type I normally frequent. The staff was friendly and helpful. The only draw-back was only one register open and a long line. I will be back I am sure! read more

First of all, let me say that Michael's has always been my go-to place for crafting. I've been a satisfied patron for 40 years. Today, out of the blue, all of the checkouts up front that are usually manned with helpful employees are now self-checkouts. There was not one counter manned by a human. I consider this a true lack of service! Fortunately, I was able to find a sweet employee by the name of Jessica who thankfully stepped in to help me. I certainly hope management reconsiders this new change to all self-checkouts. It's not helpful to the customers at all and certainly can't be considered good service. I am so disappointed with the Michael's self checkout policy. The lines were long and there was only one worker at the registers. She was hanging out leaning on the counter and talking to a friend, completely ignoring all of the customers. Why aren't prices going down if there are fewer workers? Makes no sense. read more

The manger Gloria is not no manger, she has no customer service to her customers, she is not helpful and is the rudest person I have ever met. Now Gloria has a problem using store coupons so be aware, she did not want to accept my coupon and didn't want to honor me a coupon even though I know the cashier have coupons at there register, because I have used there coupons before. I love Michael's! It's my go to craft, hobby, home type store. If you join their rewards it's easy to get all the coupons especially using the app. They are always having a sale and they always have coupons for items that aren't on sale too. Basically everything I buy here I get on sale and with a coupon. It's a deal type of place. I also like their framing department and there are always coupons for custom framing too. I like this Michael's. They might not have the breadth of art supplies that I need, but they carry my favorite brand of paint, have regular sales for that brand, and will honor any competitor's price, which is helpful since I don't have a car to get to Jerry's up north. They have decent brushes that are inexpensive, although I would suggest hitting Dollar tree for artist pallets, since Michael's are overpriced in my opinion. The rewards program has become such a joke at Michael's. Almost nothing is eligible for rewards anymore. Listed under exclusions is beads and jewelry, floral, anything bought in bulk, oh and you want rewards on frames or anything clearance.... Forget about it. I walked into the framing dept with a frame that my husband's grandfather had made by hand in 1978 and it needed updating. Unfortunately, I did not get the name of the young man who helped me. He was very kind and meticulous in helping repair the irreplaceable piece. I will use their framing dept from now on and shop at Michaels any time I can, because the staff there is amazing.
