Two requests that this restaurant had honored in the past under previous ownership (but we were unaware of the change of ownership). Our experience was that the new owner belittled our requests. One, to cook the oysters (my mother can't medically eat raw oysters but adores them if they can be cooked. And this was a special birthday dinner for her.) And a request for organic wine which we had had at this restaurant before. (Non-organic wine gives her a headache.) We also found the owner quite argumentative and experienced his manner as condescending when we made what we thought were two fairly normal requests. **In response to the restaurant's comments below, the issue was not that he said no; it was the way in which we were spoken to. (My mother actually left the restaurant for a bit to collect herself but chose to come back in for the meal. I wish we had just left.) The waitress was lovely and attentive. She was professional in all of her interactions with us and we were very grateful for her kindness. The eggs mayonnaise was just ok (could have made better ourselves). The ratatouille was quite disappointing, no depth or real flavor- definitely would have been tastier if we had made it ourselves. The branzino was the only highlight of the meal yet they had left a cluster of the green bean stems on the plate... ? On purpose? The night before we had an excellent dinner at Alta in Lenox Center. Don't hesitate to go there! Cafe Triskele used to be consistent and excellent. When you stroll through the streets of Northampton there is no telling what you'll see. In our…read morecase, one of the first things that caught our eye was this adorable statue of a reclining frog. It was stretched out over a concrete vault that held a coin slot, silently soliciting donations from passers-by to feed the homeless. The coin slot is cut into a door to the vault. The side of the vault has a brochure holder with information on homeless services and how to make a donation. The vault also has two bronze plaques. The one on the front states: "Feed the Frog Feed the Hungry" "All donations made to the "Happy Frog" bank will go directly to feeding the hungry of our community because Northampton cares." A plaque on the side acknowledges the frog's sculptor: "In gratitude to Lu Stubbs, Sculptor -2008-" What a perfect combination of creativity, art, community service, and charity, Yes, Northampton does care.

While I understand the concept behind their cuisine - traditional American flavors pared down to its truest form - I found the food to be, for a lack of better word, bland. Sure, this boils down to preference (I enjoy complex flavors with lots of seasoning), but it's hard for me to sing its praises when the chicken tasted like chicken with a pinch of salt, the pork tasted like pork with a pinch of salt, and the vegetables tasted like vegetables with, you guessed it, a pinch of salt. That's the point, I suppose, but it's a point my taste buds don't particularly agree with. That's not to say the quality and the craft was not at its best. I'll give it to them: the chicken was juicy, the pork skin crisp, the vegetables cooked to perfection (not overcooked, not too al dente, but just right). The biggest disappointment was the sesame puffs with ice cream. Seeing this on the menu, I thought, "Great, a complex flavor!" but was let down at first bite when I found that, alas, I couldn't taste the sesame at all. It tasted like a regular ol' ice cream puff slathered in too-dark caramel. It would have been better paired with black sesame ice cream, but I fear it wouldn't fit their menu's flavor profile. I'm not discouraging people from coming here. By all means, try it! It's a charming location, the food is well prepared, the ingredients premium. It just didn't wow me, and that's perfectly alright.

But every other day at the store, he cements his love of books at the cost of a passing indifference for his customers that borders on hostility. While the book selection is as comprehensive as it is well-organized, something about the place seems... well... 'off.' It's as though one is being watched--or rather scrutinized--by unseen eyes, suspicious you may be replacing a book in the wrong place, disturbing the piles of rarities without regard to how the newly imbalanced feng-shui will impact the owner as he lingers scowling from the sequestered bowls of the shop. The books are, nevertheless, excellent and priced clearly in the "almost-too-expensive-but-still-just-affordable" range. Comparatively, the prices here are fair to good. You will not be finding any shocking bargains or hidden but neglected treasures here. The books are carefully selected, after all, and intended to turn a profit for the owner. After all, buying low and selling high is the name of the game--and yet, listening in on the owner's bargaining with one collector attempting to sell her books, I'd say there are fairer prices to be had from other buyers. But after exhaustive talks ranging from condition to author popularity (when has it been hard to sell Orwell?), she settled on a price with our peculiar host all the same. It was, in a word, creepy. Upon leaving with my new acquisitions, I was reminded of John Locke's description of this weird trade which combines refined erudition with predatory avarice: "Printers, binders, sellers, and others that make a trade and gain out of them have universally so odd a turn and corruption of mind, that they have a way of dealing peculiar to themselves, and not conformed to the good of society, and that general fairness that cements mankind."
