Dr. Younan saw me within 15 minutes of me making a last-second phone call for an appointment yesterday. Having seen a dentist near my previous residence 7-8 times for the same problem, Dr. Younan took the time to understand my dental history, take adequate pictures and x-rays, and talk about the treatment options for each potential cause of the problem. He has an excellent chair-side manner and maintains his calm composure when going between patients. The front office was able to get my insurance details quickly, while previous dentist billing appointees would often make mistakes or take several weeks to get this information. I started seeing Dr. Smolen a couple years ago when I moved to Long Beach and found him through reviews. It was important to me to have someone of the same caliber as my last dentist in Beverly Hills. I was also looking for honesty, skill and someone who was good natured. I have realized how important dental health is, over the years from experiencing so many issues with my own teeth...and through the multiple visits...I would be able to tell if a doctor was really thinking on behalf of the patient or their own business needs. I also understand that everyone who works in an office represents who that doctor is(receptionist, assistant etc..) and know that if they are not held to the same level of integrity as the doctor or communicate effectively, I will not be made a priority...which is a deal breaker. With that said, I couldn't have found a better dentist with Dr. Smolen and now Dr. David (who's joined the practice in the last year or so). This office exudes all of the things that were important to me, and more. They are so understanding and easy to work with. With my many complicated dental issues, they make me feel at ease and though it's not a problem. If I have an emergency, they'll see me on their lunch or schedule me on a Saturday. They reach out through texting which is the easiest form of communication for me(they do Phone and email as well). They are up front about everything that gets billed to my insurance and have been MORE than generous by how they charge if you do pay out of pocket. He patiently sat with me and discussed treatment plans and gave me all of my options. There wasn't a single high pressure sales moment like some offices. Dr. Smolen is amazing. He puts me completely at ease, explains everything in detail, answers all of my questions, and never ever guilt-trips me about my bad habits. Instead, he addresses my dental health with patience and concern for my comfort at all times. I don't have a frame of reference related to dental costs, but I do know that at one point he could have anesthetized me to do some drilling. But as it was a tooth that had already had a root canal, he instead told me he would try without and asked me to let him know if I experienced any discomfort. I was fine, but didn't miss the fact that had he had less scruples, he could have performed and charged me and my insurance for an extra, unnecessary step - and did not. Everyone on staff is friendly. I feel great about going to an office with one doctor, so I know whom I'll be seeing. I always feel like visiting medical "groups" is like playing Russian Roulette. I used to be afraid of the dentist until I came here. They are second to none. I've been going to Dr. Smolen since 1999. Dr. Smolen is extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and a great dentist. And his team is outstanding. Chris is a gem. Everyone loves her. She is always helpful on everything - appointment reminders, billing help/questions, insurance help, etc. And Leslie is a great oral hygienist as well--very gentle, thorough job, and super friendly as well. From scheduling my first appointment and having my insurance questions clarified to receiving a routine cleaning by Leslie, I have been blown away by how positive, professional, and friendly the folks at this office are. Kristy at the front desk may have the sunniest personality of anyone I've ever met - she somehow made scheduling a dentist appointment enjoyable. Leslie is also one of the most accommodating medical professionals I've ever encountered. She knew I was under a time crunch and improvised her care according to my constraints, concerns, and preferences - something I've never experienced before. She explained everything clearly and in detail to me, took time to perform a bit of extra cleaning when I noticed some discoloration, and clearly prioritized my time constraints as she hustled through the treatment without making any sacrifices to the quality she was delivering. I've never been compelled to write a review for dental care before but she and the other staff at this office went above and beyond to take care of me; this level of courtesy, professionalism, personalized care and positivity is much more rare than it should be and Dr Smolen's team have managed to raise the bar and make dentist appointments much less of a pain than they usually are, literally. This office isn't even in-network for me but I'll be sticking with it because of how seamless every aspect of my interactions with their staff has been. Get a second opinion (I failed here) On a fly I picked this place because the dental hygienist there I had recently got to know through my community. Anyhow. In the end , I wished I done my homework. I think this man is bored, tired and outdated. Always be aware cash patient, if you are you need to educate your self on the procedures and options for whatever your in for. I needed alot ot dental work. I was in for the long haul. Just under 20,000 of a haul to be clear. This man changed his tune about as often as he changed his socks. Not only did he give me an estimate of the work he specified I needed and included what I WANTED cosmetically and in the middle somewhere was left out . Seeing him sometimes twice a week got the ball rolling faster. But there was no set price for any one type of treatment except for cleaning which was a whole other doctor. My 2 front teeth needed bonding, I originally wanted veneers there. But they ,well through him anyhow were astronomical. So settled on bonding for the time being. My two front teeth have been chipped since I was 7. I'm 56 so it was time. MY TWO FRONT TEETH ARE NOW SHAPED LIKE BELLS. I told staff I did not like them a gal said tell him you dont like the shape. so I did , his response "well they are ok for now" huh ? What ? Did you say "OK" they are just ok. So anyhow theres that. What he meant was , well we may still do veneers.SO what.BUT IN MY HEAD I think, so what doc, I paid for these & they should look perfect. Halfway through the 2 year treatment the bone graft didn't take. So bridges it is the very day I was to have my retainer installed in my mouth,my last day i overhear the clerk at the front desk (not a trained dental assistant or otherwise, on the phone saying loud enough to hear. "ok so, you cant attach a permanent retainer onto a crown in a bridge. Ok, ok thank you very much" as if I was supposed to hear that. Then I sat in the chair and this DrM.S tells me "well your not going to like this" He proceeds to tell me WHAT HE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN AND TOLD ME A YEAR PRIOR WH ER N I TOLD HIM I WAS SETTLING FOR BRIDGES INSTEAD OF IMPLANTS (Which he actually was in on that decision making. ) Had he been versed on this procedure or looked into it long long before my LAST visit of the whole plan. Well , I cried. I left. He says "well it might not stay on then wed be back to start all over. " Listen .i'm not a idiot. Start all over, what do you mean start all over. NO that's not true. Maybe you would have to reorder my bridge or have it repaired , but start all over. I highly doubt. This is where I get that hes lazy bored and just wants to be done already He had recently announced that he is getting ready to retire. THAT WAS MY RED FLAG Better service. You get better attention interest and service if your service person is updated,educated on the product and fresh new methods and not dreary and tired of the task in general. He orders invisaline retainers top and bottom. I tell him I want to order 2 sets in case I lose one. So I go to pick them up , and hes nit there the dentist I see is young and hea lm thy. Certainly not tired Not agitated. I ask him if it's possible, before I tell him the other dr said no. He said "well if you had used this xyz material for the tooth rather then the abc material that was used in your bridge it would be fine. WO- WO -WOOOOO WHAT ? I also ask to order another back up set of retainers so I'm confident I have some of I lose any. "Oh yes of course sure we can do that. We just reorder from the number on the retainer we already have it's in your file." ME to the desk clerk. " I'd like to order another set. How much are they , she says "well your payment was 400. For 2 sets so I'm guessing 200. Per set (that sounds about right to me) If you find your self there in search of a dentist, pick the young handsome bright eyed middle eastern man. I'd like to say Dr. Smolen and the back office staff were amazing. Caution: call and check your insurance benefits prior to visiting. I was told I had wonderful insurance(Guardian) by the office. I thought great sure go right ahead schedule two deep cleanings and anything else the doctor recommended. What the front office staff intentionally left out of my visit was that I was "Out of Network and they only had a contract with Delta Insurance." Therefore I had to pay for 75% my dental work until a $1500 deductible was met. Lesson learned call your insurance first, then go off their provider list. Don't trust them to be honest. read more

Leslie, the Hygienist, displays a high degree of detailed knowledge and with the bad shape I was in when I first became a patient, I thought there was no hope for me. I must say that I am not a big fan of the dentist world. Having several cavities as a kid and getting drilled by a dentist was not something that I did not want to experience ever again. The dental hygienist that I was assigned was a young lady by the name of Leslie Correa. I wanted to know her background and experience before she worked on me and she took the time to share it. I grew up fearing the dentist and swore that my children would not do the same. Well, SUCCESS! I've been a very satisfied patient of Dr. Smolen's for...OMG... over 10 years. I was referred to him by my good friend (now SIL) and have been faithfully going to my appointments twice a year. Both my boys see Dr. Smolen and Leslie. I think they have a bit of a crush on her. Dr. Mike and Leslie are so patient with them and their hovering mom. My little one (now 5y/o) is so comfortable with Leslie, that he has been known to fall asleep during his cleaning. They actually look forward to going to the dentist and showing off their pearly whites. Yeah, the treasure box has a little something to do with it, but no amount of treasure would ever entice me to go back to the dentists I had as a kid, or even the ones I saw before Dr. Smolen.
