Age caught up to me, was told my eyes needed cataract surgery by my optometrist. Gave me a couple of choices, glad I chose Dr. Drinnan. His group practice is busy-either a good sign (lots of satisfied patients) or bad (lots of patients indifferent to the care they receive). Fortunately it's the former. My first visit seemed thorough, tests were performed, eyes dilated, another exam to confirm what had been diagnosed, which is good, they didn't just accept what they were told. Dr. Drinnan explained what he found, he even used my phone to take a video of what he saw as evidence for the need for surgery-in my case the lens had yellowed and also was causing an incorrectable vision. Very cool to see the reason why. I also could correct my astigmatism in the replacement lens, and he explained the pros and cons. Dr. Drinnan gave me new knowledge of the eye-structure, lens replacement, how yellowing gave things a yellow tinge and surgery meant things may become brighter and colors truer. He was reassuring to say I'm a routine case with a high chance of success, assuming everything would go OK being that I've never had any surgery ever. On the day of the first surgery it went as smoothly as his staff described. Treatment took 30 minutes of a two-hour appointment. In the recovery room, what I could see through the protective eye shield was clarity for the first time in 40+ years without glasses. Dr. Drinnan provides drops to take 3 days before surgery and I continued them 3x/day for two weeks-followed pre-and post op instructions to the letter. What's a little inconvenience for a lifetime of clear vision? A few days after surgery, I noticed how a new lens made a huge difference-colors were true instead of a yellowing hue, lights were brighter as a result, and vision out of that eye was now 20/20 the next day. Went back a week later, and second eye was done, same results, 20/20 for both eyes the next day. I should caution that the correcting lenses put in are an additional cost toMedicare, plus copay, but that was explained by Dr. Drinnan and Staff. If one can rave about an ophthalmologist Dr. Drinnan would be my choice. Thoroughly professional, compassionate and skilled treatment, he even personally called me the evening after surgeries to make sure I was doing ok and to answer any questions. Had cataracts. Did my homework in choosing an Opthamologist. So glad I chose Dr. Drinnan. He was professional & gave me all of my options. I asked the right questions & he answered them in a highly educational manner. Explained the new Toric lense for astigmatism. Surgery was easy....Toric lenses in place. I have perfect vision! I'm not saying that Dr Drinnan doesn't know what he's doing. However, I find his manner almost abrupt. When discussing eye disease , I think more time should be taken and a more gentle manner (approach) used. I was diagnosed with AMD three years ago at Pacific Eye Physicians in San Francisco. Foolishly, I did not stay with them because of my Medical Insurance. Earlier this month, I went in for my yearly examination with Dr Drinnan. He told me my eyesight had worsened and that my cataract had also worsened. I asked him whether or not he could remove the cataract. Of course, he replied, "That's What I Do, That's What I Specialize In" However, he went on, it might not help your eyesight and it could damage the eye. With that he prescribed new lenses and said he would see me next year and with that, he briskly walked out!!! I was left feeling totally freaked out!!! So, what happens now? The eye clouds over with film? That's It??? I didn't even have time to collect my thoughts to quiz him about my concerns. I won't be returning to Dr. Drinnan. With major problems on the horizon re: my vision, I need to have appointments with doctors who are a little more empathetic. Back I go to Pacific Eye Physicians. A remarkable clinic, where doctors confer with one another and extensive eye tests are done and there is absolutely none of this, See You Next Year and Hello to the next patient practically before they (the doctor) has left the room. read more

I originally came to see Dr. Drinnan for a consultation 3 yrs ago for my cataract surgery and very much liked his professionalism, demeanor and confidence as a surgeon/physician. So,I elected Dr. Drinnan to perform my 'higher risk' cataract surgery and am so incredibly happy with the results! My 84 year old mother was referred to Dr. Drinnan by her regular eye Dr. for a cataract in her left eye. She was very anxious and worried about having eye surgery. Dr. Drinnan explained her options and answered her many questions. She chose the multi focal lenses which require both eyes being done.
