Normally, they are great, but today they had some issues, namely being way overbooked and understaffed. Our appointment was for 11am for an eye exam and checkup/followup for my mother's macular degeneration/cataracts/and overall vision health. Front of house: 3 stars. Very crowded and long wait in the waiting room. At least it was clean, but they clearly did not have enough chairs for the throngs of patients waiting for their eye exams. The receptionists were pre-occupied gossiping & chatting instead of greeting patients. When we finally were able to check in, the receptionist was pretty cold and unwelcoming. Over the phone, they are all very nice and attentive, but in person, they seemed to care more about their personal lives than helping their patients. While waiting, I did walk around and browse the very expensive eyeglasses. I found one that I liked for myself and I was stunned at the cost: $550 just for the frames. Add lenses and extras and it would be $800-1000. Nice, quality, attractive stuff, but no thanks. The designer stuff from Oakley, Maui Jim, etc was all around 2x the retail price from what I know about their costs. But I guess this is Burlingame, and people will pay those premium prices, just because they can afford it? Not me. Anyways, back to the service... Technician/nurse/first assistant: 5 stars. A lady named Donna was the best part of this clinic. Her chair side manner, patience, attention to detail, efficiency, care, and thoroughness were very impressive. She really took great care of my mother as she guided her gently through the process of the eye exam, x-rays, and tests. She was wonderful and I can tell that she loves her job helping people at this clinic. She was very clear, very sensitive, took her time doing all the procedures, and her professionalism & kind spirit are top-notch. We spent the most time with her at the screening machines, then later in the exam room. She is single-handedly, the best part of this clinic. The doctor: after such a pleasant and fantastic experience with Donna the technician, Dr Chern made us wait approximately 45 minutes only to come in, mutter a few quick words, then quickly ran off to deal with other overbooked patients. He was professional, but very short and cold. He seemed to care more about moving on to the next patient, not really interested in listening to or answering my mother's questions. I've never seen a doctor who seemed so rushed and preoccupied with moving on with his day. This is probably prof the they are indeed overbooked here, and as other Yelpers have said, this place does feel like a mill or conveyor belt. Anyways, he saw us for all of about 1-2 minutes and quickly disappeared. When we asked to speak to him about other questions, the receptionist said that he was already with his other patients. Oh well, at least we got to meet him. One star for his rush and inability to spend a little more time with us, despite making us wait 45 minutes for his surprise appearance. All in all, the clinic is ok. The phone call and the technician were the best aspects of their operation. The reception and doctors were pretty cold, rushed, detached, and focused on other things not about us. Donna gets 5-stars for saving this overall experience. She is real, genuine, caring, gentle, efficient, professional, and engaged in her job. The clinic does suffer from overbooking, long wait times, rushed appointments, and cold doctors. The eyeglass center suffers from extremely high & unnecessarily inflated pricing of not even the highest end of designer glasses. The office is clean, crowded, but conveniently located near 101/Millbrae/Peninsula Hospital. Ample parking, and a nice modern building. I only wish that the front of the house and the doctors here were as stellar as Donna the technician. That would indeed create a 5-star experience, but today, they only got 3, and that's because of the incredible exam that was administered by Donna!

Patient wait times are horrendous. They don't care that you show up on time for appointments…read more You'll still wait anywhere from 40 minutes to 1.5 hours before being seen. Patients aren't the priority, high volumes of patients seem to be the priority. Front office staff are pleasant but clearly overwhelmed. The doctors are efficient with their exams, almost robotic, and you can tell they are working in a patient mill.

Very disappointing experience with this office's surgery scheduling and insurance verification…read moreprocess. My wife's surgery was cancelled because the office claimed our insurance was not active "on time." In reality, our COBRA payment had already been made 10 days before the surgery and Blue Cross/Blue Shield was able to perform an urgent manual eligibility override, confirming that the plan was active. The issue was not that we were uninsured -- the issue was that the office relied only on the initial system status and did not know how, or did not try, to handle the COBRA eligibility situation properly before cancelling the surgery. This created unnecessary stress for our family at the worst possible moment. A surgery should not be cancelled because the administrative staff cannot navigate a temporary COBRA processing delay, especially when the insurance company was able to resolve it quickly once contacted correctly.

Dr. Fong is 2nd in command and is terrible. She is not friendly, the technology used in this office hasn't changed since the 80's. Dr. Fong ordered me 'HARD' contact lenses - which I had never had in my life. They were miserable, and I requested that I need soft contact lenses as that's what I've been wearing for 20 years. She places the order - here's the best part!!!! She orders me a "6 month" supply. Well after 6 months I needed more lenses. She says "Oh, well your insurance only covers for a 1-year supply, you will need to pay out of pocket." I ask - "if you knew that, why wouldn't you have ordered me a 1 year supply?" She mumbles and basically says "do you want them or not?" Even better, """1 YEAR""" after my visit, I get a bill for $75 for a visit. When I had visited for my evaluation and to pick up my contacts I was told by the front desk that there was no copay needed and nothing due. The Dr's office is Kirschner, but you will be lucky to see him for more than 3 minutes. The remaining 97% is spent dealing with the miserable and lousy Dr Fong. I don't write many reviews, but I hope this will help at least 1 person to decide to GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!!! This place is garbage.

His group practice is busy-either a good sign (lots of satisfied patients) or bad (lots of patients indifferent to the care they receive). Fortunately it's the former. My first visit seemed thorough, tests were performed, eyes dilated, another exam to confirm what had been diagnosed, which is good, they didn't just accept what they were told. Dr. Drinnan explained what he found, he even used my phone to take a video of what he saw as evidence for the need for surgery-in my case the lens had yellowed and also was causing an incorrectable vision. Very cool to see the reason why. I also could correct my astigmatism in the replacement lens, and he explained the pros and cons. Dr. Drinnan gave me new knowledge of the eye-structure, lens replacement, how yellowing gave things a yellow tinge and surgery meant things may become brighter and colors truer. He was reassuring to say I'm a routine case with a high chance of success, assuming everything would go OK being that I've never had any surgery ever. On the day of the first surgery it went as smoothly as his staff described. Treatment took 30 minutes of a two-hour appointment. In the recovery room, what I could see through the protective eye shield was clarity for the first time in 40+ years without glasses. Dr. Drinnan provides drops to take 3 days before surgery and I continued them 3x/day for two weeks-followed pre-and post op instructions to the letter. What's a little inconvenience for a lifetime of clear vision? A few days after surgery, I noticed how a new lens made a huge difference-colors were true instead of a yellowing hue, lights were brighter as a result, and vision out of that eye was now 20/20 the next day. Went back a week later, and second eye was done, same results, 20/20 for both eyes the next day. I should caution that the correcting lenses put in are an additional cost toMedicare, plus copay, but that was explained by Dr. Drinnan and Staff. If one can rave about an ophthalmologist Dr. Drinnan would be my choice. Thoroughly professional, compassionate and skilled treatment, he even personally called me the evening after surgeries to make sure I was doing ok and to answer any questions. He and his Staff do a great job preparing for the procedure both medically and financially. Thanks, Dr. Drinnan I would highly recommend you, from one health professional to another!
