Amherst Greenhouse - On and on, a beautiful spread.

Imagine chrysanthemums, 80,000 of them--yep 80k-- 8* 10^5, all in one place…read more Imagine Ohio Stadium 4/5ths covered by the puffy bloomed, jeweled colored flowers, a mum in almost every seat from the Southstands through the westside, around the north end to almost the Victory Bell. This is how many of the autumn blooms Amherst has every fall. Add the uncountable loads of other flower and plants in spring and it's a Mecca for garden buffs. Calling a place a Mecca is cliche, old hat, probably overused on Yelp. But the metaphor absolutely fits this greenhouse. First they have five full acres under roof. Secondly, it will take a pilgrimage to get there, for it's way out in the rural plains south of Lima. Just go to the middle of nowhere, take a left to bum F Egypt, head towards the boondocks of the sticks, and you'll be halfway there. It is off the narrow Allen county road of Amherst in-between State route 196 and 117. In fact the biggest neg is the traffic jam on the undeveloped street that occurs in the spring when the highly popular greenhouse attracts gardeners from all over the state. Turning in its gravel lane showcases a lovely maintained house beside a sparkling pond and manicured flower patches. Towering above are the greenhouses that seems to go on endlessly. Here a abundant choices grow under what could be miles of sprinklers, and miles of piping with plotted plants hanging down. The selection is a eye-popping plane of annuals, perennials, and veggies. Shrubs, bushes, trees, and a few rustic wooden garden decor round out their Jupiter size enclosures. They are open seasonally: April until late spring/ summer. Then they open up again in the fall selling the previously mentioned mums with pumpkins, squashes, and gourds. Daily hours are limited: 9-5 Monday through Friday; 9-12 Saturday. A family biz, Amherst has an interesting origin story. In 2002, the family started a 10 X 20 greenhouse to grow flowers themselves. They ended up growing too many so they put a sign up by the driveway. Soon all the extra flowers were gone. In response to the demand they put up a larger greenhouse and sold 700 Chrysanthemums that fall. From then the business grew exponentially. It is an experience if you dig plants and are in the area.

A Brown & Sons Nursery - Our purchase today. We got them all planted that day as well.

We have purchased MANY trees over the years from Browns and other local nurseries, but our latest…read moreexperience at Browns has not been good. A tree we purchased 10 months ago has not been doing well. It has been properly planted and cared for-even "babied" along-and still not doing well. We are not at all new to tree planting or basic knowledge, so to have this kind of issue is very very rare for us. We have inquired back with Browns 3 times now as to what we can do to help this tree make it, and have gotten zero help or answers this far. We are getting the feeling that they are just waiting for our 1 year from purchase guarantee to pass by so that they can skip their commitment. We do not necessarily want the tree to be replaced, we want their input to know to make this tree thrive better and we are not getting it. Our next tree/shrubs may be coming from someplace else. Update from initial paragraphs above... absolutely zero "customer service" for the tree, and our time ran out. We had to cut it down. $300+ in the burn pile. I very rarely give a business this kind of review, but I honestly feel that this was warranted. We played by all of their retune/customer purchase rules and guidelines, and they did nothing.

Yellow Springs Botanicals - The pineapple plant I mentioned. They also have really nice lime trees.

Meaning, Steve and Karen Reed…read more(two of the co-owners I met-super nice!) obtained the abandoned Stutzman's Nursery and is in the process of clearing debris, repairing greenhouses and building gardens where you can cut your own fresh, organic herbs and vegetables. Sound good? There's more. George's Village Greenery, a nursery that used to sell exotic plants downtown, consolidated with YSB. So, you can now buy their exotic and tropical plants alongside perennials, local trees, bushes, ferns, carnivorous, cacti and succulents, local pottery, organic herb and veggie plants and more! Since the site is still being remodeled it's a little rough-not as polished as most nurseries, but it's getting there. They just built the "New Garden Market" which includes really nice indoor plants and local decor. I purchased a Silver Table fern for only $5-something I've never seen before. While walking through the greenhouses I experienced a lot more new things, like a pineapple plant that had a little pineapple on top of it and several plants I've never seen also in bloom, including cacti. I saw a healthy amaryllis and it's not even November! Sorry, I'm nerding out. You'll also experience Muscovy ducks from South America walking around helping to keep the bugs at bay. They also apparently ate all the kio in the fish pond, so their presence is, or was, bittersweet. A small grey cat also greeted us and said farewell-the apparent mascot. I forget his name. Osiris, maybe? Probably so since he looked a little rough.... The owners know they can't compete with all the chains that sell annuals at discounted prices. I don't think they even want to, to be honest. They're trying to rebuild the past but make it bigger and better, adding new experiences and education to the community. Both of which I definitely left with.
