Miami Life Center is a consummate yoga studio. I first practiced Mysore style here in 2007 with co-founder Tim Feldman and then again with him in 2009. Many moons later their shala aka yoga studio moved from South Beach to the Wynwood neighborhood which is a unique neighborhood with many art galleries, heaps of graffiti murals, and an amazing vegan restaurant aka Love Life Cafe. I studied primarily Mysore style Ashtanga aka self-practice with Joseph Armstrong and also with Silvana. Along with more Yin and Restorative classes Yin with Wanda and Restorative with Dennis. All the teachers here are excellent, knowledgeable, friendly, and welcoming. One room for improvement is during one Mysore class someone was texting throughout the class which was annoying. The studio should be a place to unplug from your phone. The studio offers remote zoom and in person both yet students in class shouldn't be texting on their phones if something is so important than they shouldn't be in class and handle that outside. I have spent many years abroad in India doing intense yoga studies and also here in North America yet feel that Miami Life Center is one of the best places to learn the transformative practice of Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga on our tiny planet. I read all the great reviews but i did not know it was going to be such a vibe! When we parked outside i did not know it was going to be so big inside and BEAUTIFUL. It's kept clean and has so much character to it. Parking is on the side of the road that you can pay for or there's a couple parking spots in the front of the building. The bathrooms are beautiful and there's shower options and just changing areas as well. The class was nice and subtle it wasn't intensive or aggressive. It was a nice yoga class, it felt like a very very good stretch and would be perfect after being extremely sore from the gym. if you're looking for a nice calm stretch this is the place for it. read more

I stumbled upon this yoga studio serendipitously and decided to drop in for a class. The receptionist asked if I've ever taken ashtanga before so that I would be aware of how physically demanding this class is going to be... that's how you know their classes kick asses (sorry, I just had to rhyme)! I handed over $20 and put away my flip flops in a little cubbie, then put away my jacket in the bathroom. A mat is free for the first time. When the time came, we went into the smaller room. They offer different levels; I took a full primary class. It was definitely tough and I loved every minute of it. The instructor did hands-on adjustments which I appreciate greatly. I felt rejuvenated afterwards! I've taken many yoga classes in New York City and I wish we had this studio here! After that, check out Under the Mango Tree nearby for a smoothie! read more

I've been practicing at Miami Life Center for the past 2 years and am truly addicted. Not only is the Ashtanga practice at this studio authentic, but it's not as intimidating as I thought it would be. ALL of the teachers and apprentices were so welcoming and supportive when I first began and 2 years later they are so knowledgeable about where I am in my journey and how to support the process beyond asana alignment and adjustments. Getting to know the teachers and see their own journey has been part of the inspiration and the reason I find myself dragging my behind to the studio on days that I have no desire to move. They all have a dedicated practice and because of this truly understand the internal intelligence of the asanas. It is also so rare to find teachers that understand yoga beyond asana. Because of their curiosity of yoga as a science of the mind, they have been able to support me when my desire to step on my mat is minimal. They have become my community. I have a Mysore practice already in place and when my Home studio closed MLC was my Obvious choice. Although it is a distance from my House it is worth the drive! Top notch teachers, welcoming staff, beautiful space. All the necessary amenities for anyone. The front desk staff was very helpful. This is an amazing place. I've been practicing yoga for a while but only in the last 2 years I've really made an effort to include yoga into my weekly practice. Now, yoga is all I do. The teachers at this place are pretty amazing. They approach new students each class to find out about injuries and limitations and each new student's level of practice. There are a variety of classes at the center but I'm only focusing on the guided ashtanga classes. It is usually a small class and the teacher walks around and takes time to help each student to deepen their stretches and adjusts postures to ensure you are doing the poses correctly. What a wonderful place! I was visiting South Beach with my partner and looking for a good yoga class. I teach yoga in Santa Monica, CA -- which is basically the epicenter of yoga in the US -- so you can imagine I have pretty high standards. I took a wonderful Ashtanga class. I've been fortunate enough to have been introduced to yoga from a young age. I never practiced regularly until about 7 years ago. Doing as much traveling as I did, I needed a form of movement that didn't require weights, a gym, or a lot of "stuff". I have taken classes with Day, Lisa, Alexandra, and Patrick - all top notch instructors who are dedicated to their practice and their students. Day & Patrick have a tough love approach while Lisa & Alexandra are softer. But all are at the top of their teaching game and it shows in their adjustments, their understanding of the human body, as well as how to get into a certain asana with a minor tweak. But it's not just about getting into the asanas. I love the attention that I am shown on a consistent basis from my instructors and I feel like they live and breathe yoga in honor of the Ashtanga & Mysore lineage. I can't say enough good things about this center. It has a stellar reputation and for good reason. The emphasis on form/alignment, as well as the spirituality of the classes; there is no other place in Miami that offers Mysore, as well as Ashtanga classes. It's apparent that there is a strong emphasis on the lineage of yoga as it was taught by the gurus and I'm blessed to be able to call this studio home when I'm in Miami. The studio itself is bright, clean and spacious. The staff are friendly and helpful and patient. I'm really impressed with this place. I'm just visiting for a few days, and took two drop-in classes. $18 for a drop-in seemed pricey, but my body and soul wanted it so i easily gifted it. Plus, it feels so good in there, the lobby, the bathroom, and then... the two teachers i experienced were wonderful, the best i had ever experienced. Ana was sweet... no, sweet is a bad word... she carries a sweetness (there we go.) and she helped me into poses that i thought i wouldn't be able to complete. In the 1.5 hours in her class i had a few moments of ecstatic bliss. It was all so sincere, i loved it. I went again the very next day, and experienced Darlene, Who is a beautiful woman with stylish short black hair wearing a pair of wooden-curved-gauges wearing all grey, short spandex and a tank top. After reciting an opening mantra, she says 'listen carefully' and then gave instructions and then only stopped when we took a restful breath. I couldn't help but laughing at the intensity, but i was enjoying myself so much. She also helped me tremendously with some poses. It is my inkling that the instructors there do an Extra training to be instructors at the miami life center, either that or i just got lucky... if all their instructors are like that.... Characters, Helpful, Sincere, and then a japanese word that doesnt exist in the english language: Kakoii, Mitame ga ii, Suteki,.... Well, this place really IS as good as it gets, yelp! read more

I can't say enough good things about Miami Life Center! I had the pleasure of being a student in their AT for 5 months. I was unsure about taking the training during Covid as most of this was done online. I was so impressed with the teachers' abilities to instruct over zoom. It felt like they were with me in my home every day. The guest teachers they had for the yoga philosophy, accessible yoga, anatomy, and so on were top notch! I did spend 2 weeks in Miami being taught in person and the adjustment were just what I needed! I would recommend anyone who has the opportunity to take classes or workshops to do so! I continue to practice online Mysore with them and continue to make improvements to my practice. Even though my practice was less advanced than many of my fellow students, I was never made to feel less than. I was challenged to do so much more than I ever thought myself capable of. We visit yoga studios when traveling. MLC is a very good Ashtanga center. We are regular yoga practitioners yet these classes taught us some new stuff. We took two community classes and a third class while in Miami Beach for a long weekend. The instructors were polite but tough. They didn't let anyone cheat or slack. The instructors corrected were they saw an issue and adjusted where they saw potential. I'm certain that if we lived nearby, this would be our home studio. read more

I've taught and practiced "power" yoga for about 5 years so I thought I was pretty confident in my knowledge in yoga. Little did I know! I went to my first Ashtanga class about 2 months ago and I walked out of that classed thinking "what the heck have I been doing for the last 5 years.". I am hooked! If you want to call yourself a real yoga practitioner, do Mysore. First of, as you move along in the set asanas you can really see your progress, both mentally and physically. Second, the self practicing atmosphere is the best way to let go of your ego and focus directly on your practice. Finally, the teachers. I have never experienced another yoga studio that has such skilled, such dedicated, and so helpful yoga teachers than at MLC. They really know what they are doing! Daylene and Patrick are my personal faves. I am so happy that I have finally found a studio that wants me to progress and doesn't have that mystical hoity toity "if you're too sore or tired don't even try it" attitude. They see what you are capable and they will teach you how to get there if you are willing to learn. As far as the employees that I've seen working there, it is refreshing to come into a studio where the front desk people are friendly and remember your name.They are familiar with and practice the yoga they represent in the studio, and they make the effort to tell you if you are ready for mysore based on your history of yoga. There is only one real problem with MLC, and that is once you practice here for any length of time, it's hard to find another place that fills the void when you have to travel, vacation etc. I've only been practicing Ashtanga for 2 years, and was a sporadic practitioner of other types of yoga before that. I used to do yoga as my "day off" until I moved to Miami and walked into my first MLC class. That mind set all ended with my first half-primary class. I mostly do mysore now, with a led class or two on the weekends. I have yet to take a class with a less than awesome teacher. Are they tough? Yep. Are they militant? No. They care about the practice, don't like ego, and know their s#$%. Like many, my girl is Day, but I love Emilia, Alexandra, Lisa, Patrick....they all bring a little something different to the practice so I pick up things from each one. It is true that Kino doesn't teach regular classes, but she does do Mysore when she is in town..It's always a trip to unroll your matt next to this tiny beautiful girl and realize you are trying to heave your butt into a jump back next to the bendiest, strongest person ever...But that's the awesome thing about MLC (and ashtanga) It just doesn't matter. The Ashtanga teaching is the main event at the studio, but I'm very impressed by the Yin class and Restorative yoga classes. Honestly, I felt so taken care of -- just shy of being pampered-- that it felt like a five-star resort spa with millionaire South Beach clientele. I've been so impressed with this studio. I chose to sign up during a 2-month vacation in Miami, and I'm so glad I did. I didn't even know a yoga studio could be this professional and driven. I took the Foundations I class with them, and the way they teach the poses is just so much clearer than a standard Vinyasa class. When you can't do it exactly the way it's supposed to be done, the teachers tell you what part is the most important for the pose, which was absolutely il-lum-i-nat-ing. I love this center. They have a great variety of classes and all the instructors I have met are warm, friendly and knowledgeable. The center is very nice and the women's bathroom is always clean. Wondering where my amazing physique comes from? Daylene kicks my butt on the regular and recently, I dropped in on Patrick's class (another affable, zen drill sergeant with a sense of humor). I'm never nearly as flexible as the yogis around me, but it's easy to feel one with your less-than-skilled self when you've got instructors like D and P. The slight increase in drop-in price kinda sucks ($20 now), but I've yet to find another studio that makes me want to stick to any kind of yoga routine! read more

Not military friendly and overpriced. When I bought a package of 10 classes, I asked if I would be okay to come back and use them as I could because I travel a lot through the military. I only got in three classes before I had to leave for two weeks. Then I went to class when I returned, and the guy working the desk told me my package had expired and he couldn't do anything. They didn't tell me the package was only good for a month when I bought it. Not cool. read more

We absolutely love this studio. Me and my partner started going 4 months ago and it's one of our most grounding exercises that we do throughout the week. All the teachers are world class and extremely gifted at what they do. The dedication they have for the practice, and the students, blows away any other studio around. We highly recommend Patricia's class, her style of teaching is encouraging, focused, passionate and very attentive and her classes bring out the very best in her students. The Ashtanga practice has brought me so much peace, grounding, openness, flexibility and empowerment. Took three classes while I was in town. I do practice ashtanga regularly so I took two mysore classes with Emelia. She was great and wanted me to feel at home. She also had some great modifications to suggest that I hadn't thought of. I did take Dana's prenatal class and it was great. You don't have to practice ashtanga at all to take it and it is for all stages of pregnancy regardless of whether you have any yoga experience. Overall a great yoga studio and I would definitely come back next time I am in town. read more

I was really really really looking forward to visiting this place on my trip to Miami so I would have a place to practice Ashtanga. I took and evening Mysore class. Why I can't give this place a 5 star review is because before and after class, I say the receptionist argue and roll her eyes with a "whatever" attitude to two different people coming to practice. She was very sweet and informative to me, but watching that unfold made me curious what this place is all about. At my home shala this would NEVER happen. This place deserves 2.5 stars actually. Because it is Half good and half bad. first the good, I always had a keen interest in this place since I used to walk by everyday back around 2007. I was always interested in Yoga, but I didn't think I lived that kind of lifestyle to be a Yogi. After moving away from the neighborhood I began practicing yoga and came to Miami Life Center on a visit in 2012. I took primary series with Emilia and she gave me my first ever Marichiyasana D adjustment. It was one of the most memorable experiences in my life, I totally felt enlightened. in 2013 I took the old shala style workshop with 2 teachers and 12 students. The teachers not only pushed me physically, but also mentally and emotionally, and after that course I've never been the same. After traveling to India a few times to practice at the main Shala in Mysore, I came back to live in South Beach in 2015. Although I may have not been on the best terms with the owners, I was very welcomed to sign up for a monthly membership. I was super excited to be practicing with Emilia who just took over the 10am Mysore class. I can only say good things about Emilia. Unfortunately there is an assistant in her class that gives the worst adjustments. She is dangerous so I have to warn everyone. It's one thing to give adjustments that hurt, and it's another to permanently injure someone's body. I ended getting repeated, injurious adjustments. The general manager started an argument with me about how I already had an injury and it was my fault. when she didn't care to listen that it was another knee that was injured. The manager of this studio tried to sit me down and tried to force me to believe that I wasn't happy and I should go somewhere else. She tried to have me believe something that wasn't true and was trying to put words into my mouth. Every time I tried to talk to her she just cuts me off mid sentence and never let me explain anything. I do believe this is a good place to do yoga, but I didn't get along with the general manager and that assistant should definitely be fired. I did a 200hr training here in 2014, the price was a little high, but there were some super awesome guest teachers, and I believe the level of education far exceeded that of previous 200hr trainings I've taken. I especially loved when the teachers taught Sanskrit, and Chanting, and taught the Yoga Sutras, This was the real Yoga to me. I wish I could still practice there, then I would of least gave it 4 stars, or maybe and still 5 since the girl that works the front desk is a Saint. That place would be much better if she was in charge. read more

I am yogafresh! I took the 4 o'clock guided ashtanga. I believe it was with Angelique, though she did not introduce herself...strange. This was only the second ashtanga class I have taken (though I frequently take vinyasa flow & power yoga) and I found it more challenging specifically insomuch diversified vinyasas and definitely more binds. I think I have found my inner pretzel cause I was doing some crazy things (for me) that I had previously not yet accomplished. Yeah me! This is a very purist studio and one of the better in that respect that I have been to. Good dressing room with shower and toilet (womens). The mats they rent out however are in disrepair and should be retired...it looks like they have been eaten by moths...eek! And if you are unfamiliar with the area...parking can be a challenge and likely will lead to your warm up with a little walk to the studio. A very pleasurable, spiritual, and stimulating experience.
